Next-Gen Rear-Mount Filter System from Aurora Aperture

Aurora Aperture Inc. has introduced a next-generation rear mount filter system that promises to successfully solve a common problem from ultra-wide-angle lens users.

The solution seems simple enough. Put the lens filter on the backside of bulbous ultra-wide-angle lenses lacking a front filter thread. Users of these style lenses would normally have to use either low-quality gel filters in the rear of the lens or otherwise use a massive front mount filter with sizes up to 186mm mounted onto a bulky adapter.

Those of you who have these lenses likely know this pain?

The idea is not a brand new one for Aurora Aperture. The company announced in 2017 a rear mount filter system, an industry-first, for the Canon EF 11-24 mm F4L USM called the CR (Canon Rear Mount) filter set.

The photography gear start-up company out of Irvine, California is quite excited for the upgrades made for this release, calling the new filter system a “major upgrade,” according to Jeff Chen, founder, and CEO.

“It expands supported lenses to several other popular ultra-wide-angle lenses, at the same time adds more filter choices, Chen said in a press release. “More importantly, the new system features a robust magnetic quick-release mechanism.”

Having more filter options for more supported brands as well as a really slick magnet-based design is at the forefront of the new system.

Filter Options
Filters in the system will include a number of ND filters, a graduated ND filter, and a light pollution filter. A required magnetic mount attaches to the back of the lens, then acts as a ‘quick release’ for which to attach the filter. The filters are constructed from high-quality Schott D 263 T eco thin glass with multi-layer nano-coatings for their light reduction capability, resulting in accurate color rendition and minimizing field curvature.

“These filters can meet the high-resolution demands of 4k/8k video, and the high pixel density of modern-day sensors,” the company said.

Brands/Lenses
Supported brands and lenses include the following: Canon 11-24mm F4L USM (and other select Canon wide-angle lenses), Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8G, Sigma 14-24mm F2.8 DG HSM Art EF mount and Sigma 14mm F1.8 DG HSM Art EF mount lenses, Sigma 14-24mm F2.8 DG DN Art E and L mount, and Sony 12-24mm F4 G.

Availability
The rear mount filters will be available through a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign this month. Pricing will be between $43 and $113 per filter with the required lens adapter at between $35 and $41 depending on the lens.
