Africa is a continent unlike any other. For photographers like us, an African ‘safari’ means an incredible journey to a vast landscape in a wildly intense environment with seemingly non-stop wildlife action.
Some of you may know this already, but ‘Safari’ is a Swahili word that translates to “journey.” Imagine for a moment, being on an African journey, and coming face-to-face with a leopard while in the bush. Or, cruising in your safari vehicle at high speeds alongside a sprinting pride of lions. Picture yourself, and your camera, so close to a herd of elephants that you feel as if they are breathing right down your neck, literally making the hair on the back of your neck stand at attention. Things can get intense just dreaming about this stuff…
I think about Africa all the time. And when I think about next year, I see us there together, you and me, filling our cameras’ memory cards with images of lions, elephants, and cheetah. I see us relaxing under a starry African night sky at the end of a long day. We reminisce about the excitement of the day and admit our hopes for the following one. The possibilities seem as endless as our imaginations. I see us getting “the feels” from all of those experiences described above – from a safe distance from the wildlife, of course.
Today I write to extend an official “invitation” to join me in Africa in November 2021, where we’ll be sure to have one of the most thrilling and successful Backcountry Journeys’ safaris to date!
Our November 9th to 16th, 2021 Botswana: Land of Giants is a particularly riveting safari-style tour that will take us to Mashatu, a picturesque and privately owned 72,000-acre game reserve, where we’ll spend six days photographing a wide-array of wildlife found inside the preserved wilderness.
Mashatu means “land of the giants,” which is a reference to the huge trees that dominate the landscape. More importantly for our purposes, this place is one of the truly best locations in all of Africa for big cat photography – lion, leopard, and cheetah are regularly spotted on the dusty expanses.
Mashatu is home to no less than seven of Africa’s “giants” – the African elephant, lion, giraffe, baobab tree, the eland, ostrich, and kori bustard. And all of these will be on display for us to photograph, in addition to more than 350 bird species that also call this place home.
