Please note: This is a “standard” tour, but some locations do require the ability to hike 1-2 miles round trip on rocky, uneven terrain.
Most meals included – (B,L,D) denotes Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day One (Travel Day)(D)
We will meet at our hotel in Springdale, UT at 5pm the first evening of the trip for an orientation and welcome dinner. Tonight we’ll work on introductory Astro Photography setups in the classroom and then prepare for the Galactic Core early tomorrow morning!
Day Two (B,L,D)
We will take an early morning trip to east side of Zion National Park to begin the workshop. We will photograph a once a year phenomenon where the Milky Way is visible with the setting crescent moon on the horizon. These unique conditions provide moonlight on the landscape, as well as a horizontal alignment of the Milky Way over Zion’s incredible mesas. We will shoot until sunrise then grab breakfast as a group. Mid-day will be used for rest and checking into our hotel in Springdale, UT. If conditions are exceptional, we will head out to shoot sunset in the park.
Day Three (B,D)
In the wee hours of the morning on Day Three, we will once again look to Zion National Park for photos of the Milky Way. We will either visit another area on the east side of the park or setup along the Virgin River. We will photograph the Milky Way over the towering red rocks and also capture sunrise. We will eat breakfast and take a break until hotel checkout. In the afternoon, we will travel further east to Kanab, UT to setup base for a few days. Time permitting, we will cover some night photography processing tips in the afternoon and evening.
Day Four (B,D)
On the morning of Day Four, we will travel to the amazing Toadstools east of Kanab. This location does require 2 miles of round trip hiking on an established trail with minimal elevation gain. We will explore some low-level lighting techniques and photograph the Milky Way over the rimrocks. March offers perfect Milky Way alignment. Afterwards, we will break once again and do image critique or post-processing later in the day back at the hotel.
Day Five (B,L,D)
Our morning shoot today is another fantastic location near Kanab, UT. Many of the buttes and sandstone around Kanab feature vibrantly colored rocks and otherworldly structures, that’s our focus! If possible, we will experiment with low level lightning and shoot into sunrise. Rinse and repeat for the afternoon and evening of Day Five, a break and nap after breakfast and instruction later in the day.
Day Six (B)
The morning of Day Six could feature numerous locations. We may travel back to Zion National Park, visit Bryce Canyon National Park, or visit another location close to the Kanab/Lake Powell area. After breakfast, we will travel back to Springdale, UT and say our goodbyes after a great trip.
