East Entrances at Glacier National Park to Reopen Following Blackfeet Vote
by Kenton Krueger
The Blackfeet Tribal Business Council voted recently to reopen the tribal land roads that lead to and from the east gates of Glacier National Park for the 2021 season. Last summer, in an effort to limit crowds and protect residents on the Blackfeet reservation from the spread of COVID-19, tribal leaders working in conjunction with Glacier Park officials, closed roads that access the east side of the Park. The Park also closed its east gates.

Since the closures, access to a number of the Glacier’s iconic locations has been off-limits. Spots like East Glacier, Two Medicine, and Many Glacier. All will now reopen following this decision by the Tribe.

This is news that Backcountry Journeys was hoping to hear, as we have been carefully monitoring things in anticipating several Photography Tour Departures at Glacier this summer and autumn.

The Continental Divide naturally splits Glacier National Park into two distinct “sides.” A western portion includes Apgar Village, Lake McDonald, Avalanche Creek, and Gunsight Mountain, and an eastern portion that includes Saint Mary Lake, Many Glacier, Two-Medicine, and Jackson Glacier, among so much more. The world-famous Going-to-the-Sun Road offers folks a way to drive from one side to the other across Logan Pass at 6,646 feet.

The re-opening of the eastern side of the Park is superb for BCJ Photo Tour itineraries at Glacier because a majority of our time is spent on the eastern side, as we lodge in the village of St. Mary, MT, right on the border of Glacier National Park on Blackfeet land. This location affords us easier access to the special parts of the Park that we find to be the best for landscape and wildlife photography!

So… Great news from Montana! We’re looking forward to healthy, fun, safe, and exciting BCJ photography tours at ‘The Crown of the Continent’ this summer and fall, where we offer both ‘standard’ and ‘hiker’ itinerary options.
