Checking in from the Field: Alaska

I landed in Anchorage last night after a quick layover in Seattle where luckily I was able to meet up with my Dad & Anne for dinner – albeit at the airport but it was great to see them and certainly better than nothing! I grew up in Seattle a long time ago and a land faraway. It was a long flight and certainly a climate shocker beginning in Phoenix which is already over 100 degrees to cool, misty Anchorage, Alaska.

After picking up a rental car (pickup truck for all the gear moving I’ll have to do in the next few weeks) I proceeded down to Rabbit Creek in the dark south of Anchorage where I will be staying for the next month on & off. Within minutes of leaving the airport I almost hit a HUGE bear as he ran right in front of my vehicle! It’s only dark up here this time of year for a few hours late at night – remember it’s two in the morning, I’ve been flying all day and – oh #$% slam on the brakes and there is a bear! Nothing says welcome to Alaska like a bear in your headlights!

We are up here preparing for three upcoming photography trips as well as a personal backpacking trip into the Kenai Mountains near Homer with my wife and some friends. It’s beautiful in Alaska during June and I’ve found a great little cabin in the woods from which to base out of for the month – near enough to Anchorage to do anything I need to get done and far enough from Anchorage – to feel like I’m really in Alaska. Below is the upcoming schedule of events – and we do have a few spots left on some of these trips if you are itching for a camera related adventure – so come join us in the Great Land!
