Iceland: Remote Westfjords & Puffins

Join Backcountry Journeys as we tour the remote Westfjords region of Iceland. While on this fantastic itinerary we’ll travel each day across one of the country’s most remote regions, looking to photograph not only the fantastic landscapes such as deep fjords, unique waterfalls, and seascapes, but also marine birds such as Puffin!

In addition to the fantastic and famous Icelandic landscapes, the Atlantic Puffin will be also be one of our main targets on this itinerary. Iceland is a superb location to see and photograph these unusual and magnetic birds. In fact, this small Nordic island is home to between 8 and 10 million Puffin, which is more than 60% the world’s entire Atlantic puffin population.

We will visit Látrabjarg, the westernmost point of Iceland, which has become one of the most thrilling bird watching places in the entire country. This nearly 9 mile long series of cliffs rise to a remarkable 1,447 feet in height; an awe-inspiring location that will provide to us amazing close-range opportunities with the birds. And it’s not only Puffin who call these cliffs home. Gannets, guillemots, razorbills, white-tailed eagles, red-throated loons, arctic terns, redshanks, snipes, auks, murres, kittiwakes, fulmars, snow buntings, ringed plovers also reside here.

Seemingly endless landscape photographic opportunities will present themselves to us on this driving tour, and we’ll take advantage of it all! We’ll be sure to visit the majestic waterfall Dynjandi, the Westfjords Pride waterfall, along with the beautiful Hraunfossar & Barnafossar falls.

Visit Iceland with Backcountry Journeys this year for an awesomely complete landscape and bird photography tour of the Remote Westfjords & Puffins.
