Acratech GXP Ball Head: The Best Head for Landscape Photography?
by Matt Meisenheimer
Are you a landscape photographer in search of a reliable and sturdy tripod head? Look no further than the Acratech GXP Ball Head. This top-of-the-line tripod head is designed to provide a stable and secure base for your camera, ensuring that your shots are sharp and steady. Let's take a closer look at this impressive product.

The Acratech GXP Ball Head is a professional-grade tripod head designed for photographers who demand the best. It's built to last, with high-quality materials that ensure it can withstand the rigors of nature photography. But don't let its sturdy construction fool you – it's also incredibly lightweight and compact, making it easy to transport to your shooting locations. It weights just 1 lb!

Acratech GXP - Key Specifications

  • Price: $559 w/ Lever Clamp
  • Load capacity of up to 50 pounds
  • Compact size: 1.05 lbs., 3.0 inches tall
  • Large locking knob for quick and secure adjustments
  • Unique open ball design

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • Lightweight and compact
  • Sturdy and robust, with a load capacity of up to 50 pounds
  • Large locking knob for quick and secure adjustments
  • Unique open ball design for positioning your camera at virtually any angle
  • Panoramic locking knob for 360-degree rotation

Cons
  • Slightly expensive compared to other ball heads on the market
  • Some users may find the knobs to be a bit stiff at first, but they will loosen up with use
  • Performance of RRS BH-50 slightly better – but at a huge additional weight and size

Design and Build Quality

One of the standout features of the Acratech GXP Ball Head is its construction. Made from high-quality materials, this ball head is built to last. It's incredibly sturdy and robust, with a load capacity of up to 50 pounds, making it suitable for a wide range of cameras and lenses. But despite its strength, it's also incredibly lightweight, weighing just over a pound, making it easy to carry around.

The Acratech GXP Ball Head is also compact, measuring just 3.0 inches tall, which means it won't take up much space in your camera bag. This is a significant advantage for landscape photographers who often have to hike long distances to get to their shooting locations.

It will easily handle everything in your kit, from a fast wide-angle lens to a 100-400mm or burlier telephoto option. I haven’t tried it, but I think this would easily handle a 400mm f/2.8 or 600mm f/4 as well.

Features and Functionality

The Acratech GXP Ball Head is incredibly smooth and easy to use. It features a large locking knob that allows you to quickly and securely adjust the position of your camera. The knob is easy to grip, even when wearing gloves, and it provides a firm and reliable hold.

One of the most unique features of the Acratech GXP Ball Head is its open ball design. This innovative design allows you to position your camera at virtually any angle, making it ideal for landscape photography. You can tilt your camera up, down, left, or right, all while maintaining a secure and stable base. Of course, this matters less when you use an L-bracket, but it is still a nice feature.

The ball head also features a panoramic locking knob that allows you to rotate your camera a full 360 degrees. This is perfect for panoramic shots or for shooting in portrait orientation.

Ease of Use

The Acratech GXP Ball Head is incredibly easy to use. The large locking knob allows you to quickly and securely adjust the position of your camera, while the open ball design makes it easy to position your camera at virtually any angle. I recommend opting for the ‘Lever Clamp’ option, as I can’t imagine going back to a standard twist clamp after using the lever clamp. It seems negligible, but it’s one of those little things that impacts user experience in a big, positive way.

The ball head is also incredibly lightweight and compact, making it easy to carry around and use in the field. This is a significant advantage for landscape photographers who often have to hike long distances to get to their shooting locations. This is the lightest yet strongest ball head on the market – by a long shot.

Price and Value

The Acratech GXP Ball Head is not the cheapest option on the market, but it's certainly worth the investment for serious photographers who demand the best. It's built to last, with high-quality materials that ensure it can withstand the rigors of outdoor photography. It also offers unique features, such as the open ball design, that make it an ideal choice for landscape photographers.

This is the best lightweight ball head you can buy. It is now the anchor of my kit and I’ve replaced my Really Right Stuff ball heads with it.

Acratech GXP Ball Head vs. Really Right Stuff BH-55

When it comes to high-end tripod heads for serious photographers, the Really Right Stuff BH-55 is often mentioned in the same breath as the Acratech GXP Ball Head. While both are excellent choices, they do have some key differences.

Ease of Use

The Really Right Stuff BH-55 may be the best head ever made. It’s the smoothest and most fluid ball head I have ever used. But, I don’t use the head any more. I haven’t in years. The reason being its weight.

After using both heads, I do think the BH-55 edges the GXP in performance and overall fluidity, but as you’ll see below, the minor performance edge is not worth the major weight.

Size and Weight

The Acratech GXP Ball Head is also smaller and lighter than the BH-55, making it a more compact option for travel and outdoor photography. It weighs in at just 1.05 pounds, compared to the BH-55's 1.9 pounds. The Acratech GXP Ball Head is also shorter in height, which can be an advantage when shooting at low angles.

Open Ball Design

One of the key features of the Acratech GXP Ball Head is its open ball design, which allows you to position your camera at virtually any angle. The BH-55 has a more traditional design, which may not be as versatile in certain shooting situations.

Price

In terms of price, the BH-55 is slightly more expensive than the Acratech GXP Ball Head. While both are premium options, the BH-55 is at the higher end of the spectrum.

Conclusion

Overall, the Acratech GXP Ball Head is an excellent choice for photographers who demand the best. It's incredibly sturdy and robust, with a load capacity of up to 50 pounds, making it suitable for a wide range of cameras and lenses. It's also lightweight and compact, making it easy to transport to your shooting locations.

While it's slightly more expensive than some other options on the market, the Acratech GXP Ball Head is certainly worth the investment for serious photographers. Its high-quality construction and unique features make it an excellent choice for landscape photography and other outdoor pursuits. It is one of the best heads for nature photography.

If you're in search of a reliable and sturdy tripod head that can withstand the rigors of outdoor photography, look no further than the Acratech GXP Ball Head. I’ve made the switch and the GXP is now my daily driver.
