Are the Dolomites the Best Place on Earth to Photograph Summer Wildflowers?

by Keenan Hursh

When it comes to breathtaking mountain landscapes, few places on earth can rival the Italian Dolomites. With their jagged peaks, rolling alpine meadows, and dramatic valleys, these mountains are a dream destination for landscape photographers far and wide. But when summer arrives, the Dolomites transform into something truly magical—an explosion of wildflowers carpet these scenic hillsides and alpine meadows in vibrant hues.

If you’re a nature photographer seeking to capture one of the most awe-inspiring floral displays on Earth, the Dolomites should be at the top of your list. I had the pleasure of guiding a workshop there last fall and I can’t wait to head back this summer to photograph not only stunning landscapes but also colorful wildflowers in all their glory!

In today’s article we’ll explore why this incredible mountain range is one of the best places on the planet to photograph summer wildflowers. Let’s get right into it…

A Wildflower Wonderland

An explosion of Color in the Mountains
From early June through August, the Dolomites become a true paradise of color. Alpine meadows, that are already stunning in their own right, burst to life with a dazzling array of wildflowers—purple gentians, fiery orange lilies, delicate edelweiss, and fields of golden buttercups sway beneath towering limestone spires. The contrast between these delicate blooms and the rugged peaks above creates a surreal, almost dreamlike landscape just waiting to be photographed.

Diversity Like Nowhere Else
Thanks to the Dolomites’ unique mix of Mediterranean, Alpine, and continental climates, the variety of wildflowers here is staggering. Over 2,400 plant species thrive in this UNESCO World Heritage-listed region, meaning photographers can find an endless range of subjects and compositions, from wide-angle shots of expansive meadows to intimate macro images of individual flowers. If you want a plethora of wildflower subjects, then this is the place to be.

Ever-Changing Light and Atmosphere
The Dolomites are famous not only for their stunning landscapes but also for their dramatic light, with golden sunrises and fiery alpenglow at sunset. Imagine capturing a foreground of glowing wildflowers bathed in soft morning light while mist swirls through the valleys below—it’s the kind of scene that makes any photographer’s heart race.

The Best Locations for Wildflower Photography

There are countless stunning locations spread throughout the Dolomites, but some are on another level altogether. Let’s dive into some of the most popular and picturesque destinations that you simply can’t miss when visiting the Dolomites.

Alpe di Siusi
Alpe di Siusi (Seiser Alm) is a dream location for wildflower photography. This high-altitude plateau offers sweeping views of rolling grass fields blanketed in summer blooms, with the jagged peaks of the Sassolungo and Sella groups rising in the distance. The contrast between the soft, colorful meadows and the rugged mountains is pure magic. Alpe di Siusi is one of the most iconic destinations in all of the Dolomites and during the warm summer months, it takes on a whole new level of natural beauty.

Cinque Torri
The Cinque Torri region is a playground for photographers. Not only does it offer incredible wildflower meadows, but the unique rock formation, featuring five distinct pinnacles, provides stunning focal points for compositions. Trails wind through fields of flowers, leading to breathtaking vistas. If you’re staying in Cortina di Ampezzo, this is a must visit destination.

Passo Giau
One of the most scenic mountain passes in the Dolomites, Passo Giau is an incredible spot for capturing wildflowers against a dramatic mountain backdrop. The surrounding meadows are filled with colorful blooms, and the towering peaks make for jaw-dropping compositions. This is an exceptional shot location for both sunrise and sunset, located just outside of Cortina, and another must-visit location in the summer.

Val di Funes
This fairytale valley is known for its picturesque and historic churches, rolling green hills, and, in summer, spectacular wildflowers. The iconic St. Magdalena Church with a foreground of colorful alpine flowers and the jagged Odle peaks in the background is an absolute must-shoot scene. If you’ve seen images from the Dolomites, you’ve likely scene this shot. Not only does it capture the natural beauty of the region but also the historical and cultural significance.

Tre Cime di Lavaredo
No Dolomites photography adventure is complete without capturing the legendary Tre Cime di Lavaredo. These towering, three-pronged peaks are among the most recognizable in the Alps if not the world, and in summer, the surrounding meadows explode with color. The trails around Tre Cime lead to stunning wildflower-filled foregrounds, perfect for dramatic compositions. Sunrise and sunset here are particularly spectacular, with warm light painting the peaks in golden hues. I’ve spent days exploring the Tre Cime region and I think it’s literally impossible to run out of top-notch compositions.

Why a Guided Photography Workshop is the Best Way to Experience the Dolomites

While exploring the Dolomites on your own is of course possible and can be very rewarding, joining a guided photography workshop is an unbeatable way to maximize your experience. Here’s why:

Access to the Best Locations at the Best Times
Local photography guides know the Dolomites like the back of their hands. They’ll take you to the best wildflower meadows at peak bloom and ensure you’re in position for the most stunning sunrises and sunsets. For our Dolomites in Summer workshop, we work with Leonardo Papera. He lives in Italy, has been photographing the dolomites for many years, and is the perfect local guide for this workshop.

No Stress—Just Photography
An all-inclusive workshop takes care of painful logistics like transportation, lodging, and meals, allowing you to focus entirely on capturing incredible images. No need to worry about navigating mountain roads or figuring out where to go next—everything is planned for you. At Backcountry Journeys our world-class team works tirelessly to build and run the very best photography workshops you’ll find anywhere.

Learn from Expert Photographers
Guided workshops provide invaluable learning opportunities. Whether you’re looking to refine your composition skills, master exposure settings, or experiment with macro photography, you’ll receive hands-on instruction from experienced professionals. We have the best guides in the business and they’re there to help you every step of the way. No matter what your skill-level or background is, you’re in good hands.

Capture Unique Perspectives
A great photography guide will help you see beyond the obvious, finding creative compositions and lesser-known vantage points that you might miss on your own. With extensive local knowledge and landscape photography expertise, our guides will ensure you get the images you’re after.
