Discover a Photographer’s Dream Journey Through Southern California

Published May 29, 2026

A Land of Endless Opportunity, Diversity, and Inspiration

When it comes to landscape photography there’s nothing better than diversity. I’d much rather have a wide range of varying opportunities than photographing the same sort of scene over and over again. This is especially true when I’m traveling or leading workshops. I want to come home with an expansive and diverse portfolio.

There aren’t too many places in North America that offer the sheer diversity of interesting landscapes that Southern California delivers to photographers on a regular basis. Within the span of a single road trip, you can move from scorching desert salt flats to jagged alpine peaks, from ancient bristlecone pine forests to towering granite walls glowing in soft alpenglow. It’s a region where extremes collide in spectacular fashion, creating endless opportunities for creative exploration behind the camera.

For landscape photographers, Southern California is more than just a destination—it’s an immersive experience. The constantly changing light, dramatic geology, and incredible variety of terrain make every sunrise and sunset feel unique. One morning may begin among rippling sand dunes beneath pastel skies, while the next ends with fiery autumn aspens framed beneath snow-dusted mountain peaks. The scale is immense, the scenery unforgettable, and the photographic potential almost limitless.

Among the countless incredible locations scattered throughout the American West, and even more specifically throughout the state of California, a few places stand above the rest as truly iconic and world-class landscape photography destinations. Death Valley, the Eastern Sierra and Alabama Hills, and Yosemite have inspired generation after generation of photographers, and for good reason. Each of these photogenic locations offers a completely different visual experience, yet together they form one of the most rewarding landscape photography journeys imaginable.

Why choose just one, when you can easily embark on a 1-2 week trip and experience them all! This is exactly why we created the ‘Best of California’ workshop here at Backcountry Journeys. Because we know just how incredible it is to experience all three of these locations in one epic adventure.

Let’s dive right on in and explore exactly why these destinations are truly world-class!

Death Valley: Surreal Beauty in the Desert

At first glance, Death Valley seems almost impossible, as if it’s a landscape that should only exist on other worlds and not here on earth. It is a land of extremes—the hottest, driest, and lowest national park in North America—yet it possesses a stark beauty unlike anywhere else on earth. For photographers, this dramatic desert landscape becomes a playground of textures, patterns, colors, and constantly shifting light.

The vast salt flats of Badwater Basin stretch endlessly toward distant mountain ranges, creating minimalist compositions that feel almost otherworldly. At sunrise and sunset, soft light skims across the crystalline polygons in the salt, revealing intricate details and subtle color that transform the barren landscape into something extraordinary. Nearby, towering sand dunes catch the first and last rays of sunlight, their curves and shadows creating endless abstract possibilities.

Death Valley is also famous for its rich geological diversity. Multicolored hillsides, rugged canyons, volcanic formations, and dramatic desert badlands offer photographers an incredible variety of subjects within relatively short distances. Every change in light creates an entirely different mood across the landscape, rewarding those willing to slow down and carefully observe.

But perhaps what makes Death Valley truly special is the sense of solitude and scale. Standing beneath a sky filled with stars or watching golden light sweep across the desert at dawn feels deeply humbling. Few places in North America offer such a powerful connection to raw wilderness and natural beauty.

The Eastern Sierra & Alabama Hills: Where Mountains Meet the Desert

If Death Valley is defined by minimalism, abstract patterns, and vast open space, the Eastern Sierra is all about dramatic contrast and towering peaks that dominate the landscape. Running along the eastern edge of the Sierra Nevada, this rugged landscape combines massive granite mountains, colorful alpine forests, reflective lakes, unique rock formations, and ancient high-desert terrain into one of the most photogenic regions in the American West.

In autumn, the Eastern Sierra becomes especially magical. Aspen groves explode into vibrant shades of gold and orange beneath snow-capped peaks, creating breathtaking scenes that draw photographers from around the world. Crisp mornings, glowing mountain light, and dramatic weather patterns combine to create ideal photographic conditions throughout the region.

One of the true highlights of the area is the Alabama Hills. Located near Lone Pine, these rounded rock formations and natural arches provide endlessly creative foregrounds for landscape photography and even images of the night sky. The iconic view of Mount Whitney—the tallest peak in the contiguous United States—rising behind the weathered boulders is one of the most recognizable scenes in the world of landscape photography.

Sunrise and sunset are particularly spectacular here. Warm light pours across the granite formations, illuminating textures and creating beautiful depth throughout the landscape. Photographers can create everything from intimate detail studies to sweeping wide-angle compositions showcasing the incredible meeting of desert and mountain environments.

The Eastern Sierra also rewards those who dare to explore beyond the beaten path. Alpine lakes mirror rugged peaks, ancient bristlecone pine forests reveal twisted forms shaped by thousands of years of harsh weather, and hidden meadows glow beneath changing fall color. Every turn in the road seems to reveal another stunning scene waiting to be photographed.

Yosemite Valley: The Crown Jewel of American Landscape Photography

Few places in the world hold the legendary status of Yosemite Valley. For generations, photographers have traveled here to capture its towering granite cliffs, powerful waterfalls, and timeless wilderness scenery. Even today, Yosemite remains one of the most inspiring landscape photography destinations on earth, and it’s no surprise why.

There is something truly unforgettable about seeing El Capitan and Half Dome rise thousands of truly vertical feet above the valley floor for the first time. Their immense scale and dramatic shapes create compositions that feel both epic and intimate depending on how they are photographed. Throughout the day, changing light paints the granite walls in constantly evolving colors and moods.

Water is another defining element of Yosemite photography. Bridalveil Fall and Yosemite Falls cascade dramatically through the valley, especially when framed against glowing autumn trees or moody storm clouds. The Merced River provides stunning reflection shots and leading lines all across the valley floor. Early morning mist often drifts across meadows and forests, adding atmosphere and depth to already breathtaking scenes.

What makes Yosemite especially rewarding for photographers is its incredible versatility. Grand vistas are everywhere, but quieter moments exist too—golden leaves lining the Merced River, wildlife wandering through open meadows, or soft evening light filtering through pine forests. Every season offers unique photographic opportunities, but fall can be particularly special when crisp air, changing foliage, and occasional early snow combine to create extraordinary conditions.

Yosemite has inspired some of the most iconic landscape images ever created, yet it never feels repetitive. Each visit offers new light, new weather, and new creative possibilities.
