Brazil is the most biodiverse nation on the entire planet, covers 47% of the South American Continent, and spans across 3 time zones. It’s home to 69 national parks and of course the Amazon rainforest. We’re all familiar with the majesty of the Amazon and how critical it is to the health of our planet but this beast often overshadows another truly unique wilderness area within Brazil. The Pantanal.
This 70,000 square-mile region is often referred to as Brazil’s best-kept secret and is the world’s largest tropical wetland. Amazingly, the Pantanal has a higher concentration of fauna than the Amazon making it one of the premiere locations for wildlife photography in all of South America and ideal for spotting Jaguars!
These stunning apex predators are without a doubt the highlight of this tour but there are also great opportunities to see giant anteaters, howler and capuchin monkeys, green anacondas (the world’s largest snake), and many tropical birds as well. The Pantanal is home to roughly 1,000 bird species, 400 fish species, 300 mammalian species, and 480 reptile species. There’s no shortage of subjects here.

Jaguars reign supreme in the Pantanal. These predators are the third largest cat in the world weighing up to 350 pounds. They’re comfortable hunting on the ground, in the canopy, and in the water and have no natural predators.
Jaguars have an impressively powerful bite that can penetrate the shells of turtles and tortoises. They apply this bite in a unique killing method often biting through the skulls of their prey crushing the brain and delivering a quick death. Whether these magnificent felines are stalking mammalian prey or diving underwater to catch crocodiles they are truly unique and special predators.
