NEW TRIP: Arctic Autumn: Lofoten Colors & Northern Lights

by Keenan Hursh

We’re incredibly excited to share some big news with our community of passionate nature photographers — Backcountry Journeys has officially launched a brand-new photo adventure, and it’s one we’ve been dreaming about for years.

We're pleased to introduce Arctic Autumn: Lofoten Colors & Northern Lights — a stunning, all-inclusive photography workshop designed to capture the magic of Norway’s Lofoten Islands at the most colorful and electrifying time of year.

Most photographers visit Lofoten during the deep freeze of winter or the long days of summer. But what if we told you that autumn — often overlooked — offers the most breathtaking combination of golden Arctic light, vibrant fall foliage, and dazzling appearances of the northern lights?

That’s what this trip is all about.

Fall Foliage Meets Arctic Light

This immersive 8-day experience takes place in late September, when the Lofoten Islands are transformed by autumn color. The golden birch forests glow against a backdrop of rugged peaks, cobalt-blue fjords, and stormy skies. The light is soft, the compositions are endless, and the landscapes? Simply unforgettable.

This is the kind of trip where you’ll be standing on a quiet shoreline, photographing golden, yellow, orange, and red foliage mirrored in still water at sunrise… and then chasing the aurora over mountain peaks by nightfall. It's an Arctic dream for any landscape photographer.

Of course, Lofoten is beautiful in the winter months, but Autumn is just as incredible and shines a new light on this wonderful place. If you're looking to capture unique and colorful images, then this trip is for you!

Aurora Season, Solar Peak

One of the most exciting elements of this new workshop is its timing — it’s scheduled around the autumn equinox, during the solar maximum, which means your chances of witnessing and photographing epic northern lights displays are very, very good.

With dark skies, minimal crowds, and crisp autumn air, this is a really great time of year to experience the aurora borealis in Lofoten — without the sub-zero temperatures of winter.

If you want to capture striking images of dazzling aurora displays over pristine arctic landscapes and quant fishing villages, you'll want to sign up for this trip before it's full.

An Itinerary Built for Photographers

This is not your everyday sightseeing tour — it’s a full-blown photography workshop. You’ll be guided by professional photo instructors who know the region, the light, and how to help you get the perfect shot. Each day features a carefully planned schedule that adapts to the weather and light — golden hour shoots, coastal long exposures, and nightly aurora chases.

Expect to photograph:

  • Colorful fishing villages on rocky coastlines

  • Iconic beaches with dynamic waves

  • Snow-dusted peaks, glowing fjords, and golden birch forests

  • Northern lights reflected in Arctic waters

All while enjoying comfortable lodging in cozy cabins, delicious meals, and the camaraderie of a small group of passionate photographers.

This Trip Is Brand-New — And It's Going to Be Popular

We’ve never offered a workshop quite like this one. Autumn in Lofoten is one of the most photogenic and least-explored seasons, and this trip hits that sweet spot between color, light, and aurora.

Click here to check out the full itinerary and reserve your spot.

We expect this one to fill quickly — and for good reason. If you've ever dreamed of photographing Norway’s wild Arctic landscapes while immersed in autumn’s golden glow and under aurora-filled skies, this is your chance.
