We’re excited to officially announce a brand-new addition to the Backcountry Journeys lineup: Vietnam Photo Workshop: Landscapes & Culture — an immersive photography adventure through some of the most visually rich and least-traveled regions of Northern Vietnam.
This trip is designed for photographers who are drawn to atmosphere, scale, and authenticity. From mist-draped mountain valleys and sculpted rice terraces to thundering waterfalls and vibrant rural life, Vietnam offers a rare blend of dramatic landscapes and deep cultural texture. Over 11 days, we’ll travel from the energy of Hanoi into the quiet highlands of Cao Bang, across legendary terrace country in Mu Cang Chai, and finally to the coast near Da Nang.
This is Vietnam at its most cinematic — subtle, powerful, and endlessly inspiring.
Northern Vietnam is defined by contrast. Limestone mountains rise abruptly from cultivated valleys, rivers curve through fields of rice and tea, and clouds move quickly through the highlands, reshaping the landscape by the minute. The light here is soft, layered, and atmospheric — perfect for photographers who love depth, mood, and storytelling.

As we leave the city behind, the scenery quickly becomes quieter and more elemental. Mornings often begin with mist pooled in the valleys, while evenings bring directional light that sculpts the terrain and highlights the rhythms of rural life. This trip is paced intentionally to allow us to work these conditions, rather than rushing through them.
Our journey begins in the remote mountain province of Cao Bang, one of Vietnam’s most unspoiled regions and a dream location for landscape photographers. Here, towering karst formations emerge directly from rice paddies, waterways reflect layered peaks, and daily life unfolds at a slower, quieter pace.
The crown jewel of the region is Ban Gioc Waterfall — one of the largest and most impressive waterfalls in Asia. We’ll photograph it from multiple angles, working with changing light, mist, and movement to create a wide range of compositions. Nearby, the serene Phong Nam Valley offers minimalist scenes of rivers, fields, and mountains that are ideal for both grand landscapes and refined, intimate frames.

This is a side of Vietnam few travelers ever experience — calm, cinematic, and profoundly photogenic.
From Cao Bang, we head deeper into the northern highlands toward the legendary rice terraces of Mu Cang Chai. These sweeping, hand-carved hillsides are among the most iconic landscapes in Southeast Asia, and for good reason.
Here, terraces ripple across steep slopes in rhythmic patterns, catching light in different ways throughout the day. Early mornings often bring fog drifting through the ridgelines, while sunsets bathe the fields in warm, directional light. We’ll spend full days working elevation, perspective, and timing — whether that means intimate detail shots or expansive, top-down compositions.

Every session feels different, and every frame tells a story of land shaped by generations of human hands working in harmony with the terrain.
Between major landscape locations, we’ll also spend time photographing Vietnam’s cultural heart. Visits to traditional craft villages reveal bursts of color, texture, and pattern — from incense drying in the sun to bamboo weaving and ancient brick homes tucked along narrow lanes.

These moments add context and narrative to the trip, offering opportunities to photograph daily life in a respectful, immersive way. They also provide visual contrast to the grand landscapes, rounding out a portfolio that feels complete and deeply connected to place.
We conclude the journey near Vietnam’s central coast, shifting gears from highland landscapes to coastal scenes and forested hills. In Hoi An, we’ll photograph fishing boats at dawn and wander the historic streets and waterways as the town comes to life.

Nearby, the forested slopes of the Son Tra Peninsula offer a rare wildlife opportunity: the chance to photograph the endangered red-shanked douc. With its bold coloration and expressive presence, this striking primate provides a compelling wildlife subject and a fitting way to close out the trip.
Like all Backcountry Journeys workshops, this trip is built around light, timing, and access. We’ll be in the right places for misty mornings, glowing sunsets, and tranquil blue-hour scenes — with expert guidance every step of the way.
By focusing on Vietnam’s most dramatic and lesser-seen regions, this workshop delivers a level of diversity and depth that’s rare in a single journey. From waterfalls and river valleys to terraced hillsides, forests, and coastlines, you’ll return with a portfolio that captures Vietnam at its most atmospheric and unforgettable.
