The Brand New DJI Mavic 3 Pro

by Keenan Hursh
If you’ve been thinking of purchasing a drone to level up your photography and videography, to achieve aerial perspectives and a birds-eye view, then you’ll definitely want to take a look at this exciting and brand-new offering from one of the best in the business.

DJI has recently announced the release of the newest drone in their lineup, the Mavic 3 Pro. For years now DJI has made a name for themselves as one of the premiere manufacturers of high-performance drones designed for videography and photography, and the brand-new Mavic 3 Pro is no exception!

The Mavic 3 and Mavic 3 Classic were already two of the most popular and successful drones on the market and this new release is even better. With the addition of a third camera for even more flexibility in focal lengths and zoom and other notable improvements on the previous model, this drone has made quite the splash.

Overview

Key Features:
  • 3-Axis Gimbal with Tri-Camera System
  • 20MP 5.1K Wide-Angle 4/3 CMOS Hasselblad
  • 70mm 48MP 3x Zoom Medium Telephoto Lens
  • 166mm 12MP 7x Zoom Telephoto
  • 7 Intelligent Flight Modes
  • Up to 43 Minutes of Flight Time
  • O3+ Transmission with 9.3-Mile Range
  • Omnidirectional Avoidance with APAS 5.0
  • D-LOG, D-LOG M & HLG Post-Processing

With their new release of the Mavic 3 Pro, DJI now offers another impressive drone to their lineup. With a compact, folding design, over 40 minutes of flight time, omnidirectional obstacle avoidance, and, of course, upgraded optics, this drone is just what professionals and skilled enthusiasts need to level up their photography and videography.

This professional version of their already popular Mavic 3 offers an upgraded gimbal that now houses 3 cameras allowing even more flexibility and diversity when shooting. In addition to the existing 20-megapixel 24mm wide angle lens from Hasselblad, and the upgraded 12-megapixel 166mm telephoto lens with 7x zoom, DJI has added a brand new 48-megapixel 70mm telephoto lens with 3x zoom as a nice middle ground.

The Mavic 3 Pro will be available for purchase in multiple configurations depending on your specific needs. Of course, consumers can purchase the basic “With RC Remote” option if they don’t need any extra bells and whistles for $2,199 USD. You will also have the option to purchase the “Fly More Combo with RC” which comes with 3 batteries and 6 propellers for redundancy and extra flight time for $2,999 USD. For $3,889 USD you can purchase the “Fly More Combo with RC Pro” option which includes everything in the “Fly More Combo” but comes with the upgraded RC Pro remote. And finally, for $4,799 USD there is the “DJI Mavic 3 Pro Cine Drone” which is geared towards professionals as this option includes a built-in 1TB SSD and higher quality encoding options. We’ll dive into these options more in a bit.

Another awesome upgrade is that the Mavic 3 Pro now has seven selectable intelligent flight modes that allow you to sit back and relax while your drone performs complex flight patterns all by itself. And don’t be too worried, the Mavic 3 Pro has a powerful and effective omnidirectional obstacle avoidance system that will prevent it from accidentally hitting objects and ruining your day.

Bottom line, this is a top-tier creative tool for aerial photographers and videographers. If you want unparalleled flexibility in focal length, longer flight times, a range of up to 9 miles, and all the quality and performance that comes with a DJI drone, then the Mavic 3 Pro is what you need. Now, let’s get into the nitty-gritty details.

Three Cameras in One Drone

The most impressive and notable upgrade with this drone is the fact that DJI has included 3 lenses on the gimbal. Whether you’d like to shoot incredibly high-quality wide-angle shots or want to significantly zoom in to get closer to your subjects you’ll be able to do it all. Let’s take a closer look at these lenses.

4/3 CMOS Hasselblad Camera
The 24mm wide-angle lens on the Mavic 3 Pro is a beast. This crystal clear camera produced by Hasselblad, who are known for their incredibly high-quality optics, can shoot from a fast aperture of f/2.8 up to f/11 and supports shooting 12-bit RAW images with a native dynamic range of up to 12.8 stops. And all of this is recorded on a 20-megapixel 4/3 CMOS sensor. It’s pretty crazy that a camera this powerful is included with two others on a compact drone!

70mm Medium Tele Camera
This camera is the new addition to the Mavic 3 Pro and adds a nice middle ground. With a 70mm focal length, a fast f/2.8 aperture, 3x optical zoom, and 48 megapixels on a 1/1.3” CMOS sensor this small but mighty camera gives you even more flexibility and allows for dynamic framing. This third lens is a very logical addition and effectively bridges the gap between the wide angle and telephoto lenses. As if two lenses weren't already great!

166mm Tele Camera
The third camera included in the Mavic 3 Pro includes a full telephoto 166mm lens. This thing comes with 7x optical zoom and 28x hybrid zoom so you can magnify objects far in the distance. It has a quick f/3.4 aperture and light is projected onto a 1/2“ 12-megapixel CMOS sensor. If you want to get up close and personal with a subject far in the distance you'll want this much zoom.

Multiple Configurations Available

As I mentioned before the Mavic 3 Pro is available for purchase in four different configurations depending on your wants and needs. With prices ranging from around two thousand to nearly five thousand dollars, there are some key differences. Let’s break them down.
With RC Remote - $2,199 USD:
This is the most basic and affordable option when it comes to purchasing the Mavic 3 Pro. Of course, you still have all 3 cameras and everything you’ll need to get started but this offering doesn’t come with any extra bells and whistles. You only have one extra pair of propellers, you’ll be using the basic remote control, there’s no protective case, no ND filters, and you’re limited to 1 flight battery. Of course, you can upgrade and purchase additional accessories down the road but out of the box, this offering is the bare minimum.

Fly More Combo With RC - $2,999 USD:
If you can afford to spend a bit extra but still don’t need every possible upgrade then the “Fly More Combo” is a great option for you. With this offering, you will still get the same drone and remote control but you will also receive a protective varying case, a set of ND filters, extra propellers, 2 additional batteries for more recording time, an additional USB-C cable, and a higher-watt battery charging hub. This is a notable upgrade from the basic offering.

Fly More Combo with RC Pro - $3,889 USD:
If everything in the “Fly More Combo” sounds great but you want to level up your game even more with the RC Pro Remote then this would be a great option for you! The Pro controller comes with 32 gigabytes of internal storage, a micro SD card slot for expandability, and an HDMI port. The basic controller comes with no internal storage. You also can’t install any third-party apps on the basic controller. In addition, the Pro controller has a much brighter LCD screen making it easier to see what you're filming on bright sunny days.

DJI Mavic 3 Pro Cine - $4,799 USD:
And finally, if you want the absolute highest quality offering of this exciting new drone, then the Mavic Pro 3 Cine is what you’re after. This offering comes with the RC Pro Remote and all the bells and whistles in the Fly More Combo but what really sets it apart is the upgraded encoding and added storage for professional video recording. The Mavic 3 Pro Cine is geared towards professionals with Apple ProRes 422, 422 HQ, 422 LT, and H.264/H.265 encoding support on all three cameras. This premium offering also features a built-in 1 TB SSD drive allowing you to capture significantly more footage.

Conclusion

To wrap things up, this brand-new drone from DJI is a beast. When it comes to flexibility, performance, versatility, and quality it’s hard to think of anything else that compares. With a range of 3 high-quality cameras allowing you to shoot stunning wide-angle shots or to zoom in up close and personal the possibilities are endless. If you’re in the market for a high-quality, high-performance drone then the Mavic 3 Pro just might be right for you.
