Get ready for an extraordinary wildlife photography safari with Backcountry Journeys in one of Africa’s most compelling and under the radar destinations. Deep in Kenya’s remote Laikipia Plateau, Laikipia Wilderness Camp offers access to a vast, private conservancy known for exceptional leopard activity, rich biodiversity, and remarkably intimate wildlife encounters. To maximize your time in the field, we utilize private charter flights, minimizing travel logistics and maximizing time behind the lens.
Laikipia has gained global attention for its melanistic, black leopards, first widely publicized in 2019. On our past departures, we are proud to say we’ve maintained a 100% sighting rate of black leopards. That track record speaks to the strength of this region and the expertise of the local guides and trackers we work with.
At the same time, wildlife is wild. Black leopards remain extraordinarily rare, and animal movements, territories, and behaviors can shift at any time. No future sighting can ever be guaranteed. Our role is to stack every possible advantage in your favor, through timing, experience, relationships on the ground, and long hours in the field, while respecting the unpredictable nature of true wilderness.
What consistently sets Laikipia apart is not just the possibility of a black leopard, but the overall quality of leopard photography. After running multiple safaris here, our guides have called it one of the hidden gems of Africa, arguably one of the finest leopard destinations they’ve experienced anywhere in the world. Leopard density is strong, vehicle pressure is minimal compared to more commercial reserves, and behavior is often relaxed and natural. Early morning and evening drives, along with carefully managed night safaris using red filtered spotlights, provide powerful opportunities to photograph these cats in dramatic conditions.
Beyond leopards, Laikipia delivers exceptional Big Five encounters, lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo, and rhino, alongside iconic northern Kenya species such as Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, and African wild dogs. The landscapes are equally compelling, rolling hills, acacia dotted plains, river systems, and expansive skies that ignite at sunrise and sunset. This diversity allows for everything from tight wildlife portraits to sweeping environmental compositions.
Our experienced local guides and trackers, paired with Backcountry Journeys’ dedicated photography leadership, create a small group, photographer first experience focused on light, positioning, and behavior. Whether tracking a rare melanistic leopard or working a golden hour elephant scene, we prioritize image making at every turn.
Laikipia Wilderness Camp also operates with a strong conservation ethic, supporting sustainable tourism and local communities. Your presence contributes directly to protecting habitat and wildlife in one of Africa’s most authentic and less traveled ecosystems.
This safari is about more than a single species. It’s about immersing yourself in a place our guides genuinely consider one of the best wildlife photography destinations on the continent, an unforgettable adventure shaped by wildness, skill, and opportunity.
