Morocco offers an extraordinary blend of culture, color, and landscape, and in 2027 it becomes the stage for one of the most dramatic celestial events of the decade. On this Backcountry Journeys adventure, we’ll combine world class total solar eclipse photography with the textures, tones, and timeless character of northern Morocco. From bustling coastal cities to the blue alleys of Chefchaouen and the quiet rhythms of rural life, this itinerary is designed to capture both the beauty of the country and the rare celestial spectacle that will briefly transform its skies.
A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon completely covers the sun, casting its shadow across the Earth and briefly turning day into night. During totality, the sun’s outer atmosphere, the corona, becomes visible, forming a luminous halo around the darkened disk of the moon. This fleeting moment is one of the most dramatic sights in nature and offers a rare opportunity to photograph the sun in a way that can only be experienced along the narrow path of totality. In 2027, Morocco sits directly beneath this path, creating an exceptional setting for capturing the event.
Our journey begins in Tangier, a centuries old crossroads where Africa meets the Mediterranean. Here, the streets come alive with contrast, bold shadows in the tight alleys of the medina, vibrant markets, and architecture shaped by Tangier’s international past. It’s the perfect place to warm up our cameras with dynamic street scenes and cultural photography.
From there, we travel south to Asilah, where bright white walls, seaside ramparts, and colorful murals create a striking visual palette. The combination of ocean haze, clean tones, and North African geometry makes this coastal town a photographer’s playground, offering minimalist compositions and strong graphic lines.
Next, we arrive in Chefchaouen, the famed “Blue Pearl” of Morocco and one of the most photogenic towns in the world. This will be our base for eclipse viewing and photography. We’ll spend time exploring and scouting compositions among the town’s blue washed alleyways and the rugged Rif Mountains that surround it. Whether you’re drawn to intimate architectural abstracts or broader environmental scenes, Chefchaouen offers endless creative opportunities.
Totality day will be unforgettable. As the moon’s shadow races across northern Morocco, the light will shift rapidly, from brilliant daylight to an eerie twilight. We’ll photograph the evolving crescent phases, the dramatic corona during totality, and the surreal atmosphere that unfolds across the landscape. Capturing this rare celestial event against the deep blues of Chefchaouen and the surrounding mountain backdrop creates a once in a lifetime photographic moment.
To conclude the journey, we head west toward Larache, where rural Morocco unfolds at a slower and more authentic pace. In the surrounding countryside, we’ll photograph village life, agricultural scenes, artisan traditions, and coastal landscapes that change beautifully with the light. It’s a quiet and grounding way to finish the trip, bringing together culture, landscape, astronomy, and storytelling in a richly rewarding photographic experience.
