Namibia is one of Africa's most visually spectacular destinations—a land of towering crimson sand dunes, endless desert horizons, dramatic granite peaks, rugged coastlines, and extraordinary wildlife. On this 11-day photographic journey, I'll take you from the iconic landscapes of the Namib Desert to the wildlife-rich plains of Etosha National Park, creating an unforgettable portfolio that showcases the remarkable diversity of this fascinating country.
Our adventure begins among the world-famous dunes of Sossusvlei and Dead Vlei, where we'll photograph ancient camel thorn trees silhouetted against towering orange dunes during the magical light of sunrise and sunset. From there, we'll travel to the Skeleton Coast, where the Atlantic Ocean collides with the Namib Desert. At Sandwich Harbour, we'll experience one of Africa's most breathtaking landscapes as immense sand dunes plunge directly into the sea—a dream location for landscape photographers.
We'll continue to the striking granite domes of Spitzkoppe, often called the "Matterhorn of Namibia," where dramatic rock formations, ancient Bushman rock art, and glowing sunsets provide endless creative opportunities. As we travel north, our focus shifts from landscapes to wildlife as we spend several days exploring Etosha National Park and the adjacent Onguma Private Reserve. Here we'll photograph elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, springbok, rhinos, and countless other species as they gather around the park's famous waterholes, often allowing for exceptional close-range photography.
Our journey concludes at Okonjima Nature Reserve, home to the renowned AfriCat Foundation, where conservation and photography come together in an unforgettable setting. Throughout the workshop, I'll help you develop your creative vision while taking full advantage of Namibia's incredible light, expansive landscapes, and extraordinary wildlife encounters.

Day 1 – Arrival in Windhoek (D)
Upon arriving at Hosea Kutako International Airport, we'll transfer to our hotel in Windhoek, Namibia's welcoming capital city. Tonight we'll gather for our welcome dinner, where we'll get to know one another, review the exciting journey ahead, and prepare for our first full day of photography.
Day 2 – Journey to Sossusvlei (B,L,D)
After breakfast, we begin our adventure into the heart of the Namib Desert. The drive itself is incredibly scenic as we cross dramatic mountain passes and expansive desert landscapes before arriving at Dead Valley Lodge, located just outside the entrance to Namib-Naukluft National Park. We'll settle into our accommodations and, if conditions allow, head out for our first sunset photography session among the towering red dunes.
Day 3 – Sossusvlei & Dead Vlei (B,L,D)
Today is dedicated entirely to one of the world's most iconic desert landscapes. We'll depart well before sunrise to photograph the incredible light on the dunes before exploring highlights including Dead Vlei, Sossusvlei, Dune 45, Big Daddy, Elim Dune, and Sesriem Canyon. The ever-changing light, ancient camel thorn trees, sweeping dune lines, and endless opportunities for abstracts make this one of the photographic highlights of the trip. We'll return to the lodge during the middle of the day before heading back into the park for another spectacular sunset session.
Day 4 – Swakopmund & the Skeleton Coast (B,L,D)
Leaving the desert behind, we'll travel west through the dramatic Gaub and Kuiseb Canyons before reaching Namibia's Atlantic coastline. Our destination is the charming seaside town of Swakopmund, where German colonial architecture meets the rugged Skeleton Coast. Along the way we'll enjoy constantly changing scenery as desert landscapes gradually give way to the ocean. After checking into our oceanfront hotel, the remainder of the day is available to relax or explore the waterfront.
Day 5 – Sandwich Harbour (B,L,D)
Today we'll experience one of Namibia's most spectacular landscapes during our guided excursion to Sandwich Harbour. Traveling by specialized 4WD vehicles, we'll photograph enormous sand dunes as they plunge directly into the Atlantic Ocean—a truly unique landscape found in very few places on Earth. Along the way we'll photograph Walvis Bay Lagoon, salt pans, coastal birdlife, and sweeping desert vistas before returning to Swakopmund later in the day.
Day 6 – Spitzkoppe (B,L,D)
This morning we follow the Skeleton Coast north before visiting the famous Cape Cross Seal Colony and stopping at interesting coastal photographic locations along the way. Later we head inland toward the dramatic granite peaks of Spitzkoppe, often referred to as the "Matterhorn of Namibia." This remarkable landscape offers endless opportunities for landscape photography, ancient rock art, fascinating geological formations, and one of Africa's most beautiful sunsets.
Day 7 – Etosha National Park (B,L,D)
Today we journey to Etosha National Park, one of Africa's premier wildlife destinations. After arriving through Anderson Gate, we'll begin our first game drive as we make our way toward Okaukuejo. Wildlife viewing centers around the park's famous waterholes, where elephants, giraffes, zebras, springbok, lions, rhinos, and numerous other species gather throughout the day. This evening we'll have the opportunity to photograph wildlife at the floodlit waterhole directly from our lodge.
Day 8 – Full Day in Etosha (B,L,D)
Today is devoted entirely to wildlife photography. We'll spend the day exploring Etosha's network of waterholes and open plains, searching for the incredible diversity of mammals and birds that call the park home. Patience is often rewarded with exceptional wildlife encounters, and we'll adjust our game drives based on recent sightings and changing light throughout the day. Tonight offers another opportunity to photograph animals visiting the famous Okaukuejo waterhole after dark.
Day 9 – Crossing Etosha to Onguma (B,L,D)
We'll spend the day slowly crossing Etosha from west to east, stopping frequently at productive waterholes and photographing wildlife along the way. This leisurely game drive allows us to experience different habitats and maximize our photographic opportunities before arriving at Onguma Private Reserve. The reserve's excellent photographic hide and beautiful lodge provide wonderful opportunities for both wildlife and landscape photography during the evening.
Day 10 – Okonjima Nature Reserve (B,L,D)
After one final morning in the Etosha region, we'll travel south to Okonjima Nature Reserve, home of the renowned AfriCat Foundation. This private reserve is well known for its conservation work with leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, and other predators. We'll enjoy an afternoon wildlife activity before settling into our lodge. Those interested may also visit the nocturnal hide after dinner for additional photographic opportunities.
Day 11 – AfriCat & Departure (B)
We'll enjoy one final early morning activity before breakfast, with opportunities to learn more about the AfriCat Foundation and photograph wildlife one last time. Afterward, we'll return to Windhoek, arriving at the international airport in time for departing flights, bringing an unforgettable Namibian photography adventure to a close.
This trip involves moderate physical activity, including short hikes and photography sessions, with most trails being accessible and well-maintained. The terrain varies from flat coastal areas to more rugged, rocky regions. Participants should be prepared for long days, including extended periods in the vehicle while traveling between locations. One portion of the trip includes hiking up and down a sand dune, which is more strenuous than a typical hike due to the soft, shifting sand and elevation changes. Exposure to sun and variable weather conditions is expected, so sun protection and appropriate clothing layers for hot days and cooler mornings and evenings are recommended.
