Trip Description:

Journey deep into the wild heart of Alaska on an unforgettable photography adventure designed around some of the most iconic wildlife and landscapes in the Last Frontier.

From coastal brown bears and salmon-filled rivers to orcas, humpback whales, sea otters, glaciers, and dramatic mountain scenery, this safari brings together an incredible variety of photographic opportunities in one immersive Alaska experience.

Explore Three of Alaska's Most Spectacular National Parks

This handcrafted photography safari takes you into Katmai National Park, Lake Clark National Park, and Kenai Fjords National Park, three extraordinary wilderness destinations that showcase Alaska at its wildest.

Each park offers something completely different. Katmai and Lake Clark are legendary for their coastal brown bears, while Kenai Fjords combines spectacular marine wildlife with glaciers, rugged coastline, waterfalls, and towering mountains.

Rather than simply visiting Alaska, you'll experience it from the air, land, and sea using private charter flights, bush planes, and boats to reach areas far beyond the normal road system.

World-Class Brown Bear Photography

Two days of the safari are dedicated to photographing Alaska's incredible coastal brown bears.

Using private bush flights, we'll have access to an expansive network of bear-viewing areas throughout Katmai and Lake Clark National Parks and the surrounding Alaska Peninsula. Potential destinations may include places such as Chinitna Bay, Brooks Falls, Hallo Bay, and other productive bear locations selected based on current conditions.

One of the greatest advantages of this trip is our flexibility.

There is intentionally no fixed bear location assigned to a particular day. Weather, flying conditions, salmon activity, and the location of the bears can change quickly in Alaska. Each day, our guides and pilots will evaluate conditions throughout the region and determine where we have the best combination of safe flying conditions and strong photographic opportunities.

Some days may provide intimate, eye-level encounters with bears feeding along rivers or tidal flats. Other locations may offer incredible opportunities for behavioral images, tight portraits, bears fishing for salmon, or wider compositions showing these magnificent animals within the vast Alaskan landscape.

Our goal is simple: put you in the strongest photographic situation the conditions allow.

Experience the Marine Wonders of Kenai Fjords

The adventure continues in Kenai Fjords National Park, one of Alaska's premier destinations for marine wildlife and dramatic coastal landscapes.

We'll travel by boat through deep blue-green waters surrounded by towering mountains and immense glaciers while searching for wildlife such as orcas, humpback whales, sea otters, Steller sea lions, harbor seals, bald eagles, and seabirds.

The landscape is every bit as impressive as the wildlife.

Massive tidewater glaciers descend from the Harding Icefield, waterfalls pour from steep mountainsides, and rugged peaks rise directly from the sea. Depending on conditions and wildlife activity, photographic opportunities can range from whales and seabirds to sweeping landscapes and intimate details of glacial ice.

As with all wildlife photography, every day is different. That's part of what makes photographing Alaska so exciting.

An Adventure Built for Photographers

This isn't simply a sightseeing tour with photography added on.

The safari has been designed from the ground up for photographers, with professional photography guides, small-group travel, flexible field time, and access to locations selected specifically for their photographic potential.

With nearly a decade of experience leading wilderness and lodge-based photography trips throughout Alaska, the Backcountry Journeys team understands the logistics, wildlife behavior, changing weather, and photographic challenges that come with working in this environment.

Whether you're an experienced wildlife photographer or an adventurous beginner, our guides will work with you throughout the trip on camera settings, composition, anticipating wildlife behavior, and making the most of each opportunity.

Experience Wild Alaska

Few trips combine this much of Alaska into a single photography adventure.

You'll explore three spectacular national parks, fly deep into remote bear country, photograph some of the world's greatest concentrations of brown bears, cruise beneath glaciers, and search the waters of Kenai Fjords for whales and other marine wildlife.

It's an opportunity to experience the scale, wildlife, and wilderness of Alaska in a way few travelers ever do.

Join Backcountry Journeys for an unforgettable Alaskan wildlife photography adventure.

 Trip Itinerary

Most meals included – (B,L,D) denotes Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 1 (Travel Day)
Your adventure begins in Anchorage at our arrival hotel. You can arrive in Anchorage at any time before our orientation at 5 pm.

Days 2 - 3 (B,L,D)
We will meet bright & early this morning to travel south to Seward, while photographing mountain landscapes and wildlife along the way. Once in Seward, we have full day boat tours into Kenai Fjords National Park, a gorgeous coastal National Park featuring abundant wildlife, tidewater glaciers, and towering mountains.

These two days will be all about whales, sea lions, otters, bald eagles & thousands of sea birds! Note that we will be in a very remote area that is purposefully FAR from where other operators go – this allows for a more tranquil wilderness experience & also far superior wildlife encounters.

After the day's shoots, we'll share a gourmet dinner, and discuss the plan for tomorrow. We'll go over our options for locations, departure method, and what gear to bring.

Days 4 – 6 (B,L,D)
We'll depart Seward and head for our next location: Homer. We'll enjoy some bald eagle photography at Anchor Point and then the next few days will be spent at our beautiful wilderness lodge overlooking Kachemak Bay. Each day will consist of heading out in our privately chartered seaplanes to access Katmai or Lake Clark National Parks, the Bristol Bay Watershed, or any location where bears are active. We have hundreds of available locations, which includes some of the best bear photography locales in Alaska.

Every evening we’ll head back to the lodge to sit down for a multi-course meal and discuss the plan for the following day!

Day 7 (B,L)
On our final day, we will venture out one more time for a morning session to photograph the Kenai Mountains & hopefully a few moose! Everyone will be dropped off at the Homer Airport and we'll bid farewell to all the new friends we made on this unbelievable Alaskan safari!

Please note that the exact sequence of the itineraries on all photography trips will be based on weather and lighting conditions. The goal on these trips is to make sure we are at the right place at the right time for the perfect light on our subjects. Also, itineraries can change for a variety of other circumstances including floods, forest fires, national park closures, road closures, and more. Due to the nature of wildlife and landscape photography, we do not guarantee any specific sightings or specific compositions.

Physical Requirements

This is a Level 2 trip.

Hiking will vary by activity, with the longest distance around 2–3 miles. You'll visit various locations to observe bears in their natural habitat, requiring some off-trail navigation to reach prime viewing spots. Expect uneven, boggy terrain, sandy beaches, and stream crossings, but we’ll provide waders so you can focus on photography.
