Denali National Park is one of North America's great wilderness landscapes, more than six million acres of boreal forest, alpine tundra, braided rivers, glaciers, and rugged mountains protected on an extraordinary scale. Rising above it all is Denali, North America's highest peak at 20,310 feet, an immense wall of rock and ice that dominates the Alaska Range whenever the weather allows.
This photography workshop is designed to experience Denali differently, not simply passing through the park, but traveling deep into its interior and spending several days immersed in the landscape.
Our journey begins in Fairbanks, where we'll board the Alaska Railroad for the scenic ride south to Denali National Park. From there, we'll travel the legendary Denali Park Road toward one of Alaska's most remarkable wilderness lodges, Camp Denali.

Denali has only one road, stretching more than 90 miles into the park. During the summer, private vehicles are generally restricted beyond the first 15 miles, meaning most visitors experience the interior aboard larger park buses. Staying at Camp Denali gives us a very different experience. Located near Mile 89, beyond Wonder Lake and deep within the park, Camp Denali operates vehicles that allow us to travel through this spectacular landscape in a much smaller group while tailoring our days around photography.

The journey itself is part of the experience. The Park Road traverses river valleys, mountain passes, open tundra, and some of the finest wildlife habitat in Alaska. Grizzly bears, caribou, moose, Dall sheep, red foxes, ptarmigan, golden eagles, and even wolves are all possible along the way. Denali was originally established in 1917 in large part to protect its wildlife, and more than a century later, it remains one of the best places in North America to photograph animals moving freely through an intact wilderness ecosystem.

Our base for three nights is Camp Denali, an iconic wilderness property founded in 1952 on a ridge overlooking the Alaska Range. The setting is exceptional. On a clear day, you can step outside your cabin and look directly toward Denali, while nearby ponds can create beautiful reflections of the mountain. Wonder Lake, tundra, wetlands, spruce forest, and sweeping views of the Alaska Range are all close at hand.
That access gives us something photographers rarely have in Denali: time and flexibility.

Rather than trying to see the park during a single excursion, we'll have multiple days to respond to changing conditions. If Denali emerges from the clouds, we can focus on landscapes. If wildlife is active, we can shift our attention there. If beautiful light develops over the tundra or Alaska Range, we have the freedom to take advantage of it.

Midsummer is a wonderful time to be here. Alaska's long days provide extended photography opportunities, wildlife is active across the park, and wildflowers, including fireweed, add splashes of color to an already remarkable landscape. Around the Wonder Lake area, subjects can range from grand mountain scenes to intimate tundra details, reflections, birds, wildflowers, and wildlife.
Camp Denali is also much more than a place to sleep. Knowledgeable naturalist guides, excellent family-style meals, individual wilderness cabins, evening programs, and the chance to completely disconnect from cell service and everyday distractions create an experience that feels increasingly rare.

After our stay, we'll travel back through the park and reconnect with the Alaska Railroad for the return journey to Fairbanks.

This trip is ultimately about having the time and access to experience Denali properly. We'll combine one of Alaska's classic train journeys with three nights deep inside the national park, extraordinary photographic access, exceptional wildlife possibilities, and one of the finest mountain landscapes anywhere in North America.
