Day 1 (D)
Travel to Homer, Alaska
You can arrive in Homer at any time on Day 1. We’ll gather for an orientation dinner at 5:00 pm at our hotel. During dinner, we’ll review our itinerary, go over gear recommendations, and discuss logistics for photographing brown bears in the wild.
Days 2–6 (B,L,D)
Each morning begins with a hearty breakfast at the hotel before we head out on our bear photography excursions. Depending on conditions, we’ll use either floatplanes or tundra-tire bush planes to access the best bear-viewing locations across Katmai and Lake Clark National Parks, McNeil River Bear Sanctuary, or other parts of the Bristol Bay watershed.
Once we’re in the field, you can typically expect 6–8 hours of shooting time at whichever location offers the most exciting bear activity. These are action-packed, immersive days, so we also make sure there’s time built in to rest and recharge when needed.
We also have locations to photograph Bald Eagles, moose, or marine wildlife along Homer’s coastal areas—and we’ll also have many opportunities to review images and work on post-processing skills.
Lunches will either be packed and eaten in the field or served back at the hotel, depending on our daily schedule. Each evening we’ll enjoy a delicious dinner together and discuss plans for the next day’s adventure.
Day 7 (B)
On our final morning, we’ll photograph some of the dramatic landscapes around Homer and the Kenai Mountains before wrapping up. Flights out of Homer can be scheduled for any time after 8:00 am.
This trip requires moderate physical effort in a remote wilderness setting. Guests should be prepared to hike up to three miles per day across uneven terrain, including sandy beaches, tidal flats, boggy meadows, and forested trails with roots and mud. Stream crossings are possible requiring stability and balance, and boarding small boats may involve stepping into shallow water or onto slippery surfaces. Participants must be comfortable carrying their own camera gear, standing for long periods, and occasionally kneeling or crouching for photography.
