Trip Description:

Katmai Uncharted: A Private Yacht Photography Expedition

The Katmai Coast is one of the most beautiful places on Earth to photograph brown bears, a landscape of glaciated mountains and volcanoes that turns every frame into more than just a wildlife shot. Aboard the expedition vessel My Lady Alaska, we'll spend a week threading through one of North America's richest ecosystems, where wild beaches and tidal estuaries so productive they support one of the greatest concentrations of bears anywhere in Alaska.

Wild, Remote, and Rarely Seen

The photography this coast makes possible comes from its remoteness. Photographing these areas normally means rustic tent camping deep in bear country. This expedition changes that equation: we charter My Lady Alaska privately, so you get to explore the coast, chase the best light of the day, and access some of the most pristine bear habitat in the world, all from a beautiful, comfortable yacht. That comfort and flexibility, paired with access to places few people ever set foot, is the heart of this trip.

Coastal Brown Bears, Up Close and Uncrowded

Coastal brown bears are the heart of this expedition. We'll land by skiff at some legendary locations like Hallo Bay, Kukak Bay, and Geographic Harbor, among others, watching and photographing bears as they dig for clams, graze on sedge flats, and tend to cubs, all from respectful distances that let their natural behavior play out undisturbed.

Beyond the Bears

The Katmai Coast delivers far more than bears. Expect chances at humpback whales, orcas, sea otters, harbor seals, Steller sea lions, bald eagles, puffins, and the seabird colonies that work this coastline all summer long. Wolves also roam this stretch of coast, and while a sighting is never guaranteed, this is one of the rare places where it's genuinely possible. Even the transits between anchorages become part of the adventure, every crossing is a chance for the unplanned encounter that makes this kind of expedition unforgettable.

Built for Photographers

This trip is designed around photographers. A small group, personalized instruction, a flexible itinerary, and access to shorelines most visitors never see give you the time, and the freedom to build real images instead of a checklist. Whether you're after bear behavior, intimate wildlife portraits, or wide coastal landscapes lit by Alaska's long summer light, Katmai Uncharted is built to be one of the finest bear photography expeditions.

Please note: Accommodations aboard My Lady Alaska are double occupancy only. A single supplement or private cabin option is not available for yacht. Guests traveling solo will be paired with another participant of the same gender. The single supplement fee is only applicable to the arrival hotel in Kodiak, Alaska.

 Trip Itinerary

Most meals included – (B,L,D) denotes Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 1 – Arrive in Kodiak, Alaska (D)
Arrive in Kodiak and make your way to our hotel, where you'll meet your instructors and fellow photographers. Depending on arrival times, there may be an opportunity to explore the waterfront, photograph Kodiak Harbor, or simply relax after your travels. This evening we'll gather for a welcome dinner, review the week ahead, discuss photography goals, and prepare our gear for tomorrow's charter flight into the Alaskan wilderness.

Day 2 – Charter Flight to the Katmai Coast & Embark My Lady Alaska (B,L,D)
This morning we board a scenic charter flight across the Shelikof Strait to meet My Lady Alaska, our expedition vessel for the week. The flight itself offers spectacular aerial views of rugged mountains, glaciers, and Alaska's wild coastline.

After settling into our cabins, we'll begin cruising the Katmai coast while keeping a watchful eye for sea otters, harbor seals, Steller sea lions, puffins, bald eagles, whales, and other marine wildlife. If conditions allow, we'll make our first landing to photograph coastal brown bears before returning to the comfort of the boat for dinner.

Days 3–7 – Exploring the Wild Katmai Coast (B,L,D)
Each day is shaped by the wildlife. Our experienced captain and guides continually monitor tides, weather, and bear activity, allowing us to position the boat where photographic opportunities are at their very best.

We'll explore several different bays and coastal estuaries throughout Katmai National Park, landing by skiff to photograph brown bears feeding, foraging, playing, and interacting naturally in spectacular wilderness settings. Because we're mobile, we can relocate whenever changing conditions create better opportunities elsewhere along the coast.

While bears are our primary focus, the Katmai coastline offers an incredible diversity of wildlife. Throughout the week we'll also search for:

  • Sea otters floating through protected coves

  • Harbor seals hauled out on rocky shorelines

  • Steller sea lions

  • Bald eagles

  • Puffins and other seabirds

  • Humpback whales

  • Orcas (when luck is on our side)

  • Wolves and foxes, which are occasionally seen along the beaches

Photography sessions often begin early and extend into the evening to take advantage of the best light, while midday hours may be spent cruising scenic fjords, repositioning the vessel, reviewing images, or simply enjoying one of the wildest coastlines in North America. Every day is different, making each expedition a unique experience.

Day 8 – Final Morning Wildlife Photography & Return to Kodiak (B)
We'll enjoy one final photography session before saying goodbye to the Katmai coast. After breakfast we'll board our charter flight back to Kodiak, carrying home memory cards filled with remarkable wildlife encounters and unforgettable experiences from one of Alaska's most remote and spectacular regions.

Depending on flight schedules, guests may depart this afternoon or choose to spend an additional night in Kodiak before continuing their travels.

Please note that the exact sequence of the itineraries on all photography trips will be based on weather and lighting conditions. The goal on these trips is to make sure we are at the right place at the right time for the perfect light on our subjects. Also, itineraries can change for a variety of other circumstances including floods, forest fires, national park closures, road closures, and more. Due to the nature of wildlife and landscape photography, we do not guarantee any specific sightings or specific compositions.

Physical Requirements

This is a Level 2 trip. This expedition is designed for photographers with a moderate level of mobility and a spirit of adventure. While there are no long hikes or steep mountain climbs, participants should be comfortable navigating comfortably on the moving vessel, uneven natural terrain, and stepping in and out of small boats and planes without assistance in remote coastal environments.

Daily activities may include walking over rocky beaches, wet sand, tundra, driftwood, and occasionally slippery or uneven ground while carrying their camera equipment. Depending on tides and weather, you may need to step in shallow water during beach landings from our charter vessel, so waterproof boots are essential. Wildlife encounters are unpredictable, and there may be periods of standing while photographing bears, seabirds, marine mammals, and dramatic coastal landscapes.

The schedule is flexible and driven by wildlife activity, tides, and weather conditions, which can mean early mornings, late evenings, or extended time in the field when photographic opportunities are at their best. Guests should be able to remain active for several hours at a time, comfortably carry their own camera gear, walk approximately 2–3 miles throughout the course of a day over uneven terrain, and remain standing for extended periods while photographing.
