Join Backcountry Journeys for a special photography adventure timed with one of nature’s most captivating celestial events—the supermoon. During this rare phenomenon, the full moon reaches its closest point to Earth, appearing larger, brighter, and more dramatic than usual. It’s a spectacular opportunity for night sky photography, offering the chance to create compelling images—from striking telephoto captures to wide-angle landscapes illuminated by brilliant moonlight. Whether you're focused on classic night shots or looking to explore creative techniques like composites and blends, the supermoon provides endless inspiration.
But this workshop is far more than just a supermoon photography trip.
Throughout the journey, we’ll also take advantage of prime golden hour light, photographing sunrise and sunset over some of the most iconic and awe-inspiring desert landscapes in the American Southwest. From the soft morning glow on towering sandstone formations to dramatic sunsets across wide canyon vistas, you’ll have the opportunity to build a diverse and dynamic portfolio that includes both daytime and nighttime photography.
Based in the heart of Utah’s red rock country near Moab, this Supermoon Series workshop explores the remarkable terrain of both Arches and Canyonlands National Parks, as well as nearby areas and lesser-known spots that we’ve handpicked for their photographic potential—hidden gems that most visitors never experience.
Some of the locations we’ll explore include:
Delicate Arch
The Windows & Turret Arch
Balanced Rock
Mesa Arch (Island in the Sky District)
The Needles District
Green River Overlook
Fisher Towers
With International Dark Sky Park status, this region offers some of the clearest skies for night photography, along with breathtaking landscapes for sunrise and sunset shoots. Our carefully crafted itinerary ensures you’ll have plenty of time to explore a variety of compositions and lighting conditions, whether you’re chasing the magic of moonlight or the warm tones of golden hour.
This is a rare and special opportunity, combining the spectacle of the supermoon with classic landscape photography in one of the world’s most iconic destinations. Regardless of your experience level, this workshop blends expert instruction with unforgettable scenery, offering every photographer the chance to grow, create, and be inspired.

Days 2 - 5 (B, L, D)
The itinerary for this trip will be flexible because night sky photography is determined by the weather. We will carefully plan each day's activities based on the best conditions in each park.
Some sites we'll focus on might include Islands in the Sky district of Canyonlands National Park, Mesa Arch, La Sal Mountain Range, Balanced Rock, Castle Valley, "Windows" section of Arches National Park, Turret Arch, Double Arch, Parade of the Elephants, Delicate Arch, Devil's Garden, and Landscape Arch. Our guides will make sure you don't miss out on any of the opportunities available in these iconic destinations! We may also visit some nearby Utah State Parks, such as Dead Horse Point State Park. Amazing astrophotography locations are endless. As long as weather permits, the highlight of this trip will occur on Day 5 when we'll get the rare opportunity to shoot the supermoon!
Day 6 (B)
We’ll have brunch at a local coffee shop, reveling in the successes of our time together before saying goodbye after a wonderful tour of Arches & Canyonlands National Parks.
This trip involves moderate physical activity with hikes up to 3 miles per day through Canyonlands and Arches high desert terrain, which reaches over 6,000 feet in elevation. Expect to hike on uneven, rocky, and sandy trails, with occasional steep ascents and descents. Slickrock can be tricky, especially when wet. The desert environment also presents exposure to heat, and sudden weather changes such as thunderstorms can impact trail conditions.
The terrain requires guests to be comfortable with some brief scrambling over rock formations to access the best photographic vantage points. While the hikes are not overly strenuous the rugged conditions, combined with the need to carry 15–25lbs of gear, can add greater challenge. Maintaining an active lifestyle, such as regular walking or moderate outdoor activities, will help ensure a more enjoyable experience. Proper footwear, sun protection, hydration, and a layered approach to clothing are essential for this trip.
