Trip Description:

Join us on an unforgettable journey into the heart of Utah’s Badlands, a remote and otherworldly landscape that stands among the very best places in the United States for drone photography. Our adventure begins in Salt Lake City before heading south to Hanksville, a small desert outpost surrounded by some of the most dramatic geology in North America. Unlike the nearby national parks, where drone use is restricted, the vast BLM lands outside of Hanksville allow us the freedom to fly and create from the air. This rare combination of spectacular scenery and open skies makes the region an unparalleled classroom for photographers eager to expand their aerial portfolio.

The landscapes here are as diverse as they are surreal. To the east, the slate-gray ridges and golden drainages of the badlands create abstract patterns that seem designed for top-down aerial photography. In the west, the bentonite hills glow in bands of deep red, purple, and ash gray, evoking comparisons to the surface of Mars. Rising from the desert floor, the iconic Factory Butte dominates the skyline and offers endless creative potential, as its stark silhouette and radiating ridgelines transform with every change in angle and light. Nearby, Moonscape Overlook reveals sweeping, lunar-like panoramas that glow at sunrise and sunset, making it one of the most otherworldly shooting locations in the Southwest.

This workshop is designed for photographers of all levels, from those just beginning their drone journey to experienced pilots looking to refine advanced skills. Our instructor will guide you through everything from safe flying practices and flight planning to techniques such as HDR bracketing, panoramic merging, and crafting powerful aerial compositions. You’ll gain confidence with your equipment, learn how to maximize the creative potential of your drone, and return home with an entirely new perspective on landscape photography. Even if you’ve only flown a handful of times before, the supportive environment and immersive shooting schedule will have you comfortable in no time.

While Hanksville is remote, it provides comfortable lodging and dining, giving us the perfect base to focus fully on the photography experience. The isolation of the area means we’ll often have landscapes to ourselves, allowing for uninterrupted flights and unspoiled creativity. Each day is structured around chasing the best possible light, with sunrise and sunset sessions in the field, followed by opportunities for image review, editing discussions, and one-on-one instruction. By the end of the trip, you’ll not only have an incredible collection of images, but also the skills and confidence to carry drone photography into all your future travels.

 Trip Itinerary

Most meals included – (B,L,D) denotes Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 1 – Arrival in Salt Lake City & Transfer to Hanksville (L,D)
We’ll meet at 12:00 PM in the lobby of our designated airport hotel in Salt Lake City. After introductions and a welcome lunch, we’ll begin the scenic 3.5–4 hour drive to Hanksville, with breaks along the way. Upon arrival, we’ll settle into our accommodations and head into the field for our first sunset shoot in the surrounding badlands.

Day 2 – Exploring Desert Landscapes (B,L,D)
We’ll begin the day with a sunrise flight in one of the region’s dramatic locations, where ridges, drainages, and desert formations create incredible aerial opportunities. After a midday rest and instruction session, we’ll head back out in the late afternoon for another drone session timed with golden light, focusing on the region’s striking textures and abstract forms.

Day 3 – Unique Geology & Abstract Aerials (B,L,D)
The morning will take us to an area of colorful hills and ridges where layered geology offers endless creative compositions. Midday time is reserved for image review, workflow tips, and instruction on advanced drone techniques such as HDR bracketing, panoramas, and top-down abstractions. We’ll close the day with an evening shoot at one of the nearby desert highlights.

Day 4 – Panoramic Vistas & Hidden Gems (B,L,D)
We’ll rise early for a sunrise session at a scenic overlook or remote desert expanse. The remainder of the day provides flexibility for the group to explore additional locations—whether that’s soaring over badlands drainages, photographing monolithic formations, or discovering tucked-away vantage points. Our final evening shoot will be a chance to refine your skills and capture lasting images of this unique region.

Day 5 – Final Sunrise Flight & Return to Salt Lake City (B,L)
Our last morning begins with a farewell sunrise flight, a chance to capture final images in soft desert light. After breakfast, we’ll check out and make the drive back to Salt Lake City, arriving by early to mid-afternoon. Guests may plan for evening flights home or extend their stay with an additional night in the city.

Please note that the exact sequence of the itineraries on all photography trips will be based on weather and lighting conditions. The goal on these trips is to make sure we are at the right place at the right time for the perfect light on our subjects. Also, itineraries can change for a variety of other circumstances including floods, forest fires, national park closures, road closures, and more. Due to the nature of wildlife and landscape photography, we do not guarantee any specific sightings or specific compositions.
