Trip Description:
Join us for a winter adventure into the desert southwest of the United States. Winter is one of the best seasons for photography in the southwest and our tour covers the top locations in the area, from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon to the secret treasures of Grand Staircase-Escalante and more. Many of our esteemed guides take an annual winter trip to the Colorado Plateau because of its incredible geology, which yields highly productive trips.

This extraordinary journey marries the iconic allure of the Grand Canyon's snow-blanketed vistas (if we're lucky!) with the intimate allure of hidden treasures scattered around the Colorado Plateau. Our departures are scheduled during the historic peak of snowfall at the Grand Canyon.

Grand Canyon's Snow-Kissed Majesty:

Our trip commences at the iconic South Rim of the Grand Canyon, where we can witness the astounding transformation of this geological wonder into a winter wonderland. Over the course of three remarkable days and two cozy nights, we'll explore the many vistas and overlooks of the Grand Canyon in the soft winter light. If we're lucky, we'll witness and capture a winter snowfall, and if not, the winter light at the Grand Canyon can be some of the best!

Grand Staircase-Escalante & Toadstools:

Venturing into the heart of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, we'll uncover the Toadstools, badlands, and hidden gems with whimsical rock formations that appear almost otherworldly. The geology of this region is diverse, and mesmerizing. With the guidance of a pro photographer, you'll refine your ability to frame these natural wonders in a dynamic way.

Journey through eons: The Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument is a living testament to the dynamic history of the Colorado Plateau. From ancient seas to towering cliffs, every layer holds a piece of Earth's story. Today, the remnants make for incredible photography. Unique hoodoos rise up from the dirt, tall buttes dot the landscape, and mineral deposits color the hillsides in fiery hues. This area can be one of the best in all of the US for winter photography.

Slot Canyon Splendor:

What trip to the southwest would be complete without a photo stop at a slot canyon? We'll take a private trip into one of our favorite slots on Navajo land with a local guide. This hidden jewel off the beaten path promises an intimate setting to fine-tune your craft and capture the intricate details that only a select few get to witness. We'll be the only ones in the canyon so you can focus on capturing the scattering light off the colorful Navajo sandstone walls.

If you've never photographed a slot canyon before, it can be addicting, much like the night sky. Long exposures in slot canyons reveal deep hues of purple and red, colors your eye doesn't pick up, the results are amazing!

Horseshoe Bend & Beyond:

As the journey unfolds, we'll stand at the rim of Horseshoe Bend, capturing the iconic curvature of the Colorado River encircled by snow-touched cliffs. One of the most jaw-dropping spots along the Colorado River. Throughout the tour, we'll also venture into lesser-known corners of the region that awaken during this tranquil and picturesque season.

Uncover the Secrets of Winter:

Join us on an exclusive photo workshop and tour that reveals the hidden narratives of the Southwest's captivating winter landscapes. Elevate your photography skills while unearthing the geological stories of the Grand Canyon and Colorado Plateau, which make this area so productive and truly remarkable.

 Trip Itinerary

Most meals included – (B,L,D) denotes Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 1 (D)

Arrive in Flagstaff, Arizona for an orientation and welcome dinner.

Day 2 (B,L,D)

We'll make our way to iconic and world-renowned South Rim of the Grand Canyon with a few stops along the way. After lunch, we'll do some afternoon exploring before arriving at one of the best sunset vantages on the South Rim. We'll enjoy our first dinner and perhaps try some astrophotography if conditions permit.

Day 3 (B,L,D)

Today, we'll have an entire day to explore the South Rim's numerous vistas and overlooks, starting with a special sunrise. We'll hope for a winter snowfall, but even if we're not graced by Mother Nature, some of the most beautiful canyon views in the world exist at the South Rim. In winter, there are no crowds and we'll have many of the best spots all to ourselves.

The light is also soft at this time of year, and can make for some of the best shots of the canyon. If time allows, we'll also do some post-processing and critique. Another spectacular sunset awaits tonight at an overlook where you'll see the Colorado River cut through the vast canyon walls.

Days 4 - 5 (B, L, D)

After a final sunrise on the rim of the Grand Canyon, we'll proceed north on the Colorado Plateau towards Page. There are a few great stops along the way and eventually we'll arrive in Page.

For the next two days, our location is central to some of the best geology and desert landscapes on the planet. We'll have access to Glen Canyon, Grand Staircase-Escalante, and the Navajo Reservations. We'll visit hoodoos, buttes, painted hills, badlands, and a Navajo slot canyon. We'll also capture one of the most iconic scenes in all of the southwest - Horseshoe Bend! In this area, winter snow is rare, but possible.

Expect fantastic photography a diverse itinerary of locations each day. Get your camera ready!

Day 6 (B)

We'll capture one last enchanting sunrise on the Colorado Plateau. Following our final breakfast, we'll journey back through the desert to Flagstaff. Along the way, you'll carry with you cherished memories and a trove of stunning images that encapsulate our unforgettable time in the gems of the southwest.
Please note that the exact sequence of the itineraries on all photography trips will be based on weather and lighting conditions. The goal on these trips is to make sure we are at the right place at the right time for the perfect light on our subjects. Also, itineraries can change for a variety of other circumstances including floods, forest fires, national park closures, road closures, and more. Due to the nature of wildlife and landscape photography, we do not guarantee any specific sightings or specific compositions.

Testimonials From Our Customers
Julie K.
"I have traveled with Backcountry Journeys (BCJ) several times over the last 4 years to Glacier NP, Costa Rica (2x), Smoky Mountains NP, Joshua Tree, Zion and Bryce NPs, and most recently to Alaska.

Every trip with BCJ has been an outstanding experience. The guides are professional photographers who put the experience of the guests first. They are willing to provide as much hands on help as you need/want. The guides are also extremely knowledgeable and well trained in wilderness safety as well as the areas they guide.

BCJ trips are well run from the time of reservation through the entire trip. They will take you to great places and find great photographic opportunities."

"BCJ provides an outstanding experience for photographers of all levels of experience/expertise. Each day's excursion is well planned-out and the guides always have a back-up plan if the weather is less than cooperative.

I have now been on 5 trips and each one seems better than the last. I find the guides to be very helpful and personable. The guides provide the level of hands-on assistance each participant wants.

The accommodations are always good, taking into consideration what each particular destination has to offer. I plan to continue doing these trips with BCJ and can't recommend them highly enough."

"I have now been on 8 trips with Backcountry Journeys. I love traveling with this company, as I am a woman traveling alone, and all I have to do is show up and they take care of everything else.

They have wonderful, caring, helpful, FUN, and knowledgeable guides who make the days fly by. They get us to the best photography sites possible and are always willing to help with anything and answer all questions.

We stay in great places and there is always too much wonderful food! I have met other travelers on their trips who will be friends for life, plus the guides are more than guides--they become friends too. I know I will be doing more traveling with them in the future."
