From lush rainforests and pristine rivers to rare and exotic animals, this adventure promises unforgettable moments for photographers of all levels, and our photo guides will make sure you don't miss a shot!
Our adventure begins at Semenggoh Wildlife Centre, where we'll see semi-wild orangutans along with other rare species like giant squirrels, gibbons, and a variety of birds! Established in 1975, the center provides a sanctuary for orphaned and injured orangutans, rehabilitating them for eventual release back into the wild. Visitors to Semenggoh can witness orangutans returning to the center for supplemental feedings, offering a unique opportunity to observe these magnificent creatures up close while learning about vital conservation efforts.
Our journey continues to Bako National Park, the oldest national park in the region. Situated on a peninsula and accessible only by boat, the park covers an area of 27 square kilometers and boasts a diverse range of ecosystems, including mangrove swamps, dipterocarp forests, and coastal cliffs. We'll be able to explore its extensive network of trails, which offer opportunities to see a variety of wildlife such as proboscis monkeys, bearded pigs, and numerous bird species, as well as unique plant species like the carnivorous pitcher plant. The park's stunning landscapes, including its rugged coastline and secluded beaches, make it a popular destination for nature enthusiasts and photographers.
Next on our itinerary is the Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary, located within an oil palm plantation near Sandakan in Sabah, Malaysia. This privately run sanctuary is dedicated to the conservation of proboscis monkeys. These unique primates, known for their distinctive large noses and pot-bellied appearance, live in the fragmented mangrove forests surrounding the sanctuary. Visitors to Labuk Bay can observe these monkeys up close during scheduled feeding times, where they often come from the nearby forests to the feeding platforms. The sanctuary also provides opportunities to see other wildlife, such as silver leaf monkeys and hornbills, offering a unique and intimate wildlife experience.
As we continue into the heart of Borneo, a highlight for everyone will be the Rainforest Discovery Centre. This is an educational and ecotourism facility that offers visitors an immersive experience in the tropical rainforest. The centre features a 480-foot long canopy walkway, which is up to 90 feet above the forest floor. The walkway and towers offer a unique way of seeing Sabah’s rainforest and are an excellent place for bird watching. Over 250 bird species have been recorded here, including hornbills and kingfishers. We'll also visit the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary, where captive orangutans are reintroduced into the wild, and the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC). This centre houses over 30 sun bears, the world's smallest bear species, and we'll have the opportunity to photograph them as they play and forage. We'll learn about their rehabilitation and conservation, and capture their charming personalities through our lenses.
One of our accommodations will be at the Abai Jungle Lodge on the Lower Kinabatangan River. We'll embark on river cruises to photograph wildlife in their natural habitats, spotting proboscis monkeys, pygmy elephants, and a variety of bird species along the way! As night falls, we'll capture the magical display of fireflies illuminating the mangrove trees.
Another highlight of this trip will be the Borneo Elephant Sanctuary, dedicated to the conservation and rehabilitation of endangered Bornean pygmy elephants. These elephants, the smallest subspecies of Asian elephants, face numerous threats from habitat loss and human-wildlife conflict. BES provides a safe haven for injured, orphaned, and displaced elephants, offering medical care, rehabilitation, and a protected environment for them to thrive. Our time at the sanctuary will teach us about the elephants' conservation challenges and efforts to protect them. We'll observe these majestic animals in a natural setting, and gain insight into the sanctuary's vital role in ensuring their survival and well-being. Our guides will help you develop plenty of techniques for photographing these majestic creatures as they roam and interact in their natural habitat, capturing powerful images that tell their conservation story.
Our final destination is the renowned Borneo Rainforest Lodge in Danum Valley. Here, we'll trek the Coffin Trail, photograph ancient burial sites, and explore the 300-meter canopy walkway. We'll also participate in night walks and night drives to photograph nocturnal wildlife, adding a unique dimension to our portfolios!
