Few places in the world transform as dramatically in winter as the Canadian Rockies! From the icy blues of frozen lakes to snow-dusted peaks glowing in the low alpine light, Banff and its surrounding parks become a photographer’s dreamscape between December and March. This workshop is designed to make the most of that magic, guiding you to some of the region’s most photogenic locations while giving you the time, space, and guidance to create images you’ll be proud to print and share.
Our journey begins in Calgary before quickly heading west into the heart of the Rockies. Along the way, we’ll photograph iconic views such as the Three Sisters in Canmore, the glassy reflections of Vermilion Lakes, and the sweeping winter shoreline of Lake Minnewanka. These locations are stunning any time of year, but in winter the scenes become ethereal—soft morning mist, intricate frost patterns, and alpenglow that lasts far longer than in summer. Each stop offers unique compositional opportunities, from wide-angle grand vistas to intimate details in the snow and ice.
Banff will serve as our base for exploring an incredible variety of winter landscapes. We’ll traverse the Icefields Parkway, one of the most scenic drives on the planet, capturing frozen lakes like Waterfowl and Bow set against towering peaks. A day trip into neighboring Yoho National Park will reveal the emerald-hued waters of Emerald Lake framed by deep snow, and the Natural Bridge—an impressive limestone arch shaped by centuries of water and ice—offers a striking subject for both long exposures and close-up textures.
One of the highlights of this workshop is our excursion to Abraham Lake, famous for the frozen methane bubbles trapped beneath its surface. These otherworldly formations create patterns and leading lines that make for striking foregrounds against the jagged mountain backdrop. Depending on conditions, we’ll also take advantage of roadside pull-offs and spontaneous winter scenes that appear without warning—because in the Rockies, the best photographs often come from simply being in the right place at the right time.
Throughout the week, we’ll time our outings for the best light, from pastel dawns to golden-hour sunsets, and we’ll keep a flexible approach to take advantage of shifting weather. In between shoots, you’ll have opportunities for image review sessions, where we’ll discuss composition, exposure, and creative approaches to winter photography. By the end of the trip, you’ll leave not just with full memory cards, but with the skills, stories, and confidence to seek out and capture winter’s beauty wherever you find it!
