Trip Description:

The Canadian Rockies are among the most celebrated mountain landscapes in the world, offering an extraordinary combination of towering peaks, turquoise glacial lakes, ancient icefields, and pristine wilderness. Winter reveals an entirely different side of this UNESCO World Heritage region, blanketing the landscape in fresh snow, sculpting intricate ice formations, and creating clean, minimalist scenes that are every landscape photographer's dream. The soft winter light, dramatic weather, and quiet atmosphere make this one of the finest times of year to experience—and photograph—the Rockies.

Our workshop centers around two of western Canada's most iconic photographic destinations: Abraham Lake and the legendary Icefields Parkway. Abraham Lake is internationally renowned for its spectacular frozen methane bubbles, a rare natural phenomenon created when decaying organic matter on the lakebed releases methane gas that becomes trapped in successive layers of crystal-clear ice as the lake freezes. The result is a mesmerizing collection of delicate white bubble formations suspended beneath the surface—one of the most unique and sought-after winter photography subjects anywhere in the world. Every winter is different, and changing ice conditions continually create new patterns, textures, cracks, and abstract compositions.

We'll also spend time exploring the world-famous Icefields Parkway, widely considered one of the most scenic drives on the planet. Stretching through the heart of the Canadian Rockies, this remarkable corridor is surrounded by towering 10,000-foot peaks, hanging glaciers, frozen waterfalls, turquoise rivers, and vast alpine valleys. Winter transforms the parkway into a peaceful wonderland, with fresh snow softening the landscape and creating exceptional opportunities for dramatic mountain compositions and intimate winter scenes. Wildlife such as bighorn sheep, elk, mountain goats, and even wolves are occasionally encountered along the route, adding another exciting photographic possibility.

Throughout the workshop, our itinerary remains intentionally flexible so we can capitalize on the best weather, fresh snowfall, dramatic clouds, and changing ice conditions. We'll photograph during sunrise and sunset whenever conditions allow, when warm alpenglow paints the mountain peaks and the low winter sun creates beautiful side light across the frozen landscape. Between these prime shooting sessions, we'll seek out frozen shorelines, intricate ice formations, snow-laden forests, and countless smaller details that make winter in the Rockies such a rewarding photographic experience.

With comfortable lodging, a small group atmosphere, and personalized instruction throughout the workshop, photographers of all experience levels will have the opportunity to strengthen their technical skills while creating an exceptional portfolio from one of North America's premier winter photography destinations. Whether you're drawn by the famous ice bubbles, the grandeur of the mountains, or the quiet beauty of a frozen wilderness, this workshop promises an unforgettable photographic adventure.

 Trip Itinerary

Most meals included – (B,L,D) denotes Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 1 – Arrival in Calgary (D)
We'll meet in Calgary this afternoon and settle into our airport hotel before gathering for a 5:00 PM welcome orientation. During our meeting, we'll discuss the workshop itinerary, winter photography techniques, and what to expect during our time in the Canadian Rockies. We'll then enjoy our first group dinner together and get acquainted before the adventure begins.

Day 2 – Into the Canadian Rockies (B,L,D)
After breakfast, we'll depart Calgary and journey west into the heart of the Canadian Rockies. As the mountains rise around us, we'll make scenic photography stops along the way before continuing toward the Lake Louise area. After checking into our hotel, we'll head out for our first opportunity to photograph sunset before returning for dinner.

Day 3 – Abraham Lake Ice Bubbles (B,L,D)
Today is dedicated to exploring Abraham Lake and its remarkable frozen methane bubbles. We'll begin with a sunrise session before spending the day visiting a variety of locations around the lake. Each winter brings different ice conditions, creating unique patterns, textures, and compositions for photographers. Throughout the day, we'll work on techniques for incorporating the bubbles into compelling wide-angle landscape images, returning to the field again for sunset if conditions are favorable.

Day 4 – Abraham Lake & The Icefields Parkway (B,L,D)
We'll continue photographing Abraham Lake during the best light of the day while also exploring select locations along the nearby Icefields Parkway. Frozen shorelines, mountain vistas, dramatic ice formations, and snow-covered landscapes provide countless photographic opportunities. Our schedule will remain flexible, allowing us to take advantage of changing weather, fresh snowfall, and the best available conditions.

Day 5 – Final Sunrise & Return to Calgary (B)
Our final morning begins with one last sunrise session in the Canadian Rockies. After breakfast, we'll begin our journey back toward Calgary, making photography stops along the way as conditions and timing permit. We'll arrive in Calgary during the afternoon, where the workshop concludes and guests may connect with departing flights.

Please note that the exact sequence of the itineraries on all photography trips will be based on weather and lighting conditions. The goal on these trips is to make sure we are at the right place at the right time for the perfect light on our subjects. Also, itineraries can change for a variety of other circumstances including floods, forest fires, national park closures, road closures, and more. Due to the nature of wildlife and landscape photography, we do not guarantee any specific sightings or specific compositions.

Physical Requirements

This workshop is designed for photographers of all experience levels and requires only a minimal amount of physical activity. Most photography locations are easily accessible from our vehicle, with typical walks ranging from just a few yards to approximately 200 yards (180 meters). The primary consideration on this trip is the winter environment rather than the distances walked. Many photography sessions take place on snow- and ice-covered surfaces, including frozen lakes, where careful footing is essential. Participants should be comfortable walking slowly on uneven, slippery terrain while carrying their camera equipment. Ice cleats or traction devices for your boots are strongly recommended and greatly improve stability. There are no long hikes, steep climbs, or significant elevation gains during the workshop. We move at a relaxed pace, allowing plenty of time for photography, and anyone with average mobility who is comfortable standing outdoors in cold winter conditions should find this trip enjoyable.
