Photograph Abraham Lake's World-Famous Ice Bubbles
Capture the Winter Beauty of the Canadian Rockies
Stay Near Prime Photography Locations
Winter transforms the Canadian Rockies into a landscape of extraordinary beauty. Snow-covered peaks rise above frozen valleys, turquoise rivers slow beneath sheets of ice, and some of the most iconic mountain scenery in North America takes on an entirely different character. While summer often steals the spotlight, winter offers photographers a quieter, more intimate experience, where dramatic light, pristine conditions, and a sense of solitude combine to create unforgettable photographic opportunities.
Located just a few hours from Calgary, Alberta's Rocky Mountains are remarkably accessible in winter. Close to the world-famous Icefields Parkway and the eastern slopes of the Rockies, towering summits, frozen waterfalls, sweeping vistas, and pristine wilderness provide endless inspiration. Yet among all of these winter wonders, one destination stands apart: Abraham Lake.
Stretching more than 20 miles (32 km) along the North Saskatchewan River valley, Abraham Lake is framed by some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in the Canadian Rockies. Peaks such as Mount Michener and the surrounding front ranges rise directly from the lake's shoreline, creating a great landscape for photography. In winter, however, the lake becomes famous for something even more extraordinary.
Beneath the frozen surface, methane gas released by decaying organic matter rises from the lakebed toward the surface. As temperatures plummet and the lake freezes, these pockets of gas become trapped in successive layers of ice, creating the remarkable frozen bubble formations that have made Abraham Lake world-renowned among photographers. The result is an intricate collection of natural patterns and textures unlike anything else found in the Rockies.
For landscape photographers, the ice bubbles are a dream subject. Much like colorful wildflowers can transform a summer landscape image, these frozen formations provide the perfect winter foreground. Their shapes, textures, and repeating patterns create endless compositional possibilities when paired with sweeping mountain vistas, dramatic skies, and the pristine beauty of the surrounding wilderness. Whether photographed with an ultra-wide lens at sunrise or incorporated into more intimate compositions, the bubbles add depth, scale, and a sense of wonder to every image.
This five-day photography workshop is designed specifically around these extraordinary natural formations. Rather than moving between multiple destinations, we base ourselves near Saskatchewan River Crossing, providing the closest practical lodging to many of Abraham Lake's most productive photography locations. This strategic location allows us to maximize our time in the field and remain flexible as conditions, weather, and light evolve throughout the workshop.
While our primary focus is photographing Abraham Lake's iconic methane bubbles, the surrounding region offers no shortage of additional opportunities. Frozen shorelines, sculpted ice formations, dramatic mountain vistas, snow-covered forests, and some of the most photogenic locations along the Icefields Parkway are all within easy reach. Winter conditions often create ever-changing patterns of ice, frost, and snow, ensuring that every day presents new creative possibilities.
Join us in the heart of the Canadian Rockies for a unique winter photography experience focused on one of nature's most fascinating phenomena. From the intricate architecture of frozen methane bubbles to the breathtaking mountain landscapes that surround them, this workshop offers the opportunity to create truly distinctive images while exploring one of the most beautiful winter destinations in North America.
