Join Backcountry Journeys in Acadia National Park for a photo workshop during peak fall color, and discover how to master the art of landscape photography using the latest techniques. Autumn transforms Acadia National Park into a rich tapestry of color—crimson maples, golden birches, and copper beeches set against the rugged Maine coastline. With Backcountry Journeys, you’ll spend several days immersed in this brilliant landscape, learning to capture its textures, colors, and moods alongside expert photography guides. From pre-dawn light atop rocky headlands to fiery sunsets by the sea, this workshop is designed to elevate your skills while exploring the heart of one of America’s most photogenic parks.
Over the course of the trip, we’ll visit and photograph some of Acadia’s most iconic and rewarding locations. One such highlight is the Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse. Perched dramatically on the edge of a rocky cliff, this lighthouse is a quintessential symbol of the Maine coast. During sunset, the warm light ignites the granite shoreline, offering a perfect scene for learning long exposures and composition with powerful foreground elements.
Another essential stop is Jordan Pond, famous for its crystal-clear reflections and the twin peaks of the Bubbles in the background. In the fall, the shoreline is lined with vivid foliage, providing a painterly contrast to the stillness of the water. Whether you're working on symmetry or experimenting with polarizers to control glare, Jordan Pond offers an ideal classroom for refining your approach.
At Boulder Beach, the rhythmic sound of waves rolling over smooth, sea-polished stones creates a meditative atmosphere. It’s a perfect place to practice foreground interest, leading lines, and slow shutter techniques to capture the movement of the ocean. Just down the coast, Monument Cove enchants with its towering granite cliffs and secluded pebble beach, where we’ll explore creative compositions framed by dramatic vertical walls and drifting sea mist.
The secluded beauty of Hunters Beach offers a quieter experience, where a small cobble bay meets a canopy of colorful hardwoods. It’s a favorite for those looking to capture the intersection of forest and sea in a more intimate setting, often with fallen leaves scattered across the stones.
Throughout the workshop, you'll chase light across coastal headlands, forest trails, and hidden coves, all while receiving hands-on instruction in the latest landscape photography techniques. From maximizing dynamic range in high-contrast scenes to perfecting depth of field and composition, our guides will help you develop the confidence and creativity to capture Acadia’s essence in your own unique way.
In between shoots, you’ll have time to explore the charming town of Bar Harbor, unwind, and review your images. This workshop is more than just a trip—it’s a deep dive into the art of landscape photography in one of the most inspiring natural settings in North America. By the end, you’ll leave with a collection of portfolio-worthy images, sharpened technical skills, and a new appreciation for the raw beauty of Acadia in the fall.
