Iberian Lynx: A Photographer’s Obsession, Realized
Photographers are a peculiar species. We crave new. There’s always a pull toward the next thing, a new landscape, a new habitat, a new species that hasn’t yet been over-photographed or fully understood. That curiosity, that restlessness, is exactly what this journey into southern Spain is built around.
At the heart of this trip is one of the rarest and most compelling wildlife photography subjects in Europe: the Iberian Lynx.
Once hovering on the edge of extinction with fewer than 100 individuals remaining in the early 2000s, the Iberian Lynx has become one of the world’s great conservation success stories. Andalucía is now its stronghold, and within Andalucía, the Sierra de Andújar stands apart as the premier location on Earth to photograph this elusive and extraordinarily photogenic cat.
This is not a quick “hope you get lucky” encounter. It’s a thoughtfully designed, highly intentional experience centered around time, access, and probability. We’ll spend multiple full days working from professionally managed wildlife photography hides, positioned along well-established lynx travel corridors and water sources. These hides allow for ethical, low-impact photography while offering an exceptionally high likelihood of observing, and photographing, multiple individuals.Timing is everything, and we’ve scheduled this trip during the prime season when lynx activity is closely tied to water availability.
For photographers, the Iberian Lynx is something special. Compact, powerful, expressive, and beautifully patterned, it offers endless compositional possibilities, and still carries a sense of novelty that few species retain. You may have noticed more lynx images appearing in professional portfolios recently; access is expanding, but it’s still limited. We’re proud to be among the first to make this experience available to our guests, offering the chance to add a distinctive subject to your portfolio before it becomes commonplace.
While the lynx is the undeniable star, this trip is remarkably rich beyond a single species.
Along the Jándula River, we’ll photograph Eurasian Otters, vibrant riparian birdlife, and macro subjects thriving in this lush corridor. In the surrounding hills and open woodland, we’ll encounter an impressive cast of Iberian megafauna, including Red Deer, Fallow Deer, Mouflon, and Iberian Ibex, often in dramatic landscapes that lend themselves to strong environmental compositions.
Bird photographers will find the diversity exceptional, with regular opportunities to photograph species such as Spanish Imperial Eagle, Cinereous Vulture, Eurasian Griffon Vulture, Hoopoe, Iberian Magpie, Little Owl, Common Kingfisher, and many more, a lineup that adds depth and variety to an already productive itinerary.
We’ll conclude the trip in the surreal limestone formations of the Torcal de Antequera, where Iberian Ibex navigate near-vertical rock faces with effortless agility. It’s a striking contrast to the intimacy of the lynx hides and a perfect visual counterpoint to round out the experience.
We’ve built this itinerary around prime locations, ethical wildlife practices, and a rhythm that supports creativity.
It’s a rare opportunity to photograph one of Europe’s most elusive predators while immersing yourself in a region defined by conservation success, biodiversity, and understated beauty. For photographers looking to push their work forward, and their portfolios somewhere genuinely new, this is a special kind of trip.

Most meals included – (B,L,D) denotes Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 1 – Arrival in Málaga (D)
We’ll arrive in Málaga and gather in the evening for a relaxed welcome dinner and orientation. This is our chance to meet as a group, talk through the flow of the trip, and go over photography goals, lynx behavior, and what to expect during our time in the hides.
Day 2 – Málaga to Andújar (B,L,D)
After breakfast, we’ll transfer to our hotel in Andújar, the heart of Iberian Lynx territory. The drive takes us into Andalucía’s rolling hills and olive groves, setting the stage for the wildlife days ahead. Once settled, we’ll prep gear and get ready for our first full day in the field.
Day 3 – Iberian Lynx Photography Hide (B,L,D)
Our first full day in an Iberian Lynx photography hide begins early with a simple breakfast around 6 AM. We’ll be in the hide from roughly 7 AM to 11:30 AM, focusing on behavior, movement, and clean compositions as the light evolves. After a lunch break and a well-earned power nap, we’ll return to the hide from 3 PM to 7 PM before heading out for a relaxed group dinner.
Day 4 – Iberian Lynx Photography Hide (B,L,D)
We’ll follow the same proven rhythm today, giving us another full day in the hide. With patience and time, we’ll work toward more intimate portraits and action moments, refining technique and anticipating behavior. Evenings are always unhurried, with dinner together around 8 PM—the Andalusian way.
Day 5 – Jándula River & Evening Lynx Hide (B,L,D)
This morning we’ll explore the Jándula River, photographing Eurasian Otters, birds, and macro subjects along the water’s edge. It’s a great change of pace and a chance to slow down and focus on smaller details. In the afternoon and evening, we’ll return to an Iberian Lynx hide for another prime shooting session.
Day 6 – Iberian Lynx Photography Hide (B,L,D)
Another full day in the hide allows us to build on previous days and really settle into the rhythm of lynx photography. By now, everyone will be comfortable working with changing light, long lenses, and subtle moments. We’ll once again break midday and return for afternoon activity.
Day 7 – Sierra de Andújar Wildlife Search (B,L,D)
Today we’ll head out across the mountains of the Sierra de Andújar, actively searching for Iberian Lynx, Red Deer, Fallow Deer, and Mouflon. This is a more dynamic day, ideal for environmental portraits and wildlife in expansive landscapes. We’ll adapt to conditions as they unfold and make the most of the scenery.
Day 8 – Iberian Lynx Photography Hide (B,L,D)
Our final full day in an Iberian Lynx hide gives us one last deep dive with this iconic species. This is the perfect opportunity to revisit personal shot lists, experiment creatively, and savor the experience now that everyone is fully in sync with the process.
Day 9 – Torcal de Antequera & Return to Málaga (B)
We’ll start early with an early morning transfer to the Torcal de Antequera Reserve, where we’ll photograph Iberian Ibex among dramatic limestone formations. After our morning shoot, we’ll transfer back to Málaga, bringing our Andalucía wildlife photography adventure to a close.
