Southern Spain is one of Europe’s great bird photography regions, and Andalucía sits right at the heart of it. Where Mediterranean woodlands, open farmlands, wetlands, and rugged mountains collide, bird diversity is exceptional—and often concentrated. This trip is designed to put us in the right place, at the right time, with carefully chosen hides and locations that allow for close, ethical, photography-first encounters with some of Iberia’s most sought-after species. July and early August offer predictable behavior, dramatic light, and active birds, making it an ideal window for focused image-making.
Raptors are a central theme throughout the journey, and Andalucía is one of the few places in Europe where multiple eagle species overlap. We’ll work from purpose-built hides to photograph Spanish Imperial Eagles—one of the rarest eagles in the world and a true Iberian endemic—as well as Bonelli’s Eagles, a powerful, agile hunter known for explosive flight. Goshawks add a woodland contrast, while Griffon Vultures, with wingspans approaching nine feet, provide opportunities for bold, graphic compositions as they glide past at eye level. These controlled settings allow us to concentrate on behavior, clean backgrounds, and precise timing rather than distant record shots.
Beyond the big raptors, the region shines for colorful and characterful farmland birds. Andalucía is one of the best places in Europe to photograph Eurasian Rollers, whose electric blues and chestnut tones seem almost unreal in flight. Lesser Kestrels—small, social falcons—often hover and hunt in groups, offering repeated chances for dynamic action images. Collared Pratincoles bring something entirely different: long-winged, ground-nesting birds that resemble miniature shorebirds crossed with swallows, often photographed skimming low over fields or water in beautiful evening light.
Wetlands and drinking pools add yet another layer of diversity. The eastern reaches of Doñana regularly host Greater Flamingos, whose synchronized movements and feeding behavior create endlessly varied compositions, along with elegant Black-winged Stilts and other waders. Smaller birds gather in numbers at active water sources during the heat of summer, allowing for close-range photography of finches, warblers, and doves as they drink, bathe, and interact—ideal for capturing wing spreads, splashes, and subtle social behavior.
Tying it all together is Andalucía’s unique position at the crossroads of continents. Nowhere is this more evident than at the Strait of Gibraltar, where Europe and Africa nearly touch. Here, we’ll experience one of the great natural spectacles of the birding world as thousands of Black Kites and White Storks funnel south during migration—sometimes filling the sky in every direction. This extraordinary wildlife experience is paired with an equally rare celestial event: the 2027 total solar eclipse, viewed from one of Spain’s best possible locations. This is a trip that blends rare species, dramatic landscapes, cultural depth, and once-in-a-lifetime moments designed specifically for photographers who want a truly unparalleled experience!

Most meals included – (B,L,D) denotes Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 1 – Arrival in Seville (D)
We’ll gather in Seville as everyone arrives and settles in, kicking things off with a relaxed welcome dinner. This evening is all about getting oriented—meeting your fellow photographers, reviewing the plan for the days ahead, and making sure everyone’s gear is dialed in. We’ll also talk through bird targets, shooting conditions, and what to expect as Andalucía unfolds. A low-key start to ease into the rhythm of the trip.
Day 2 – Seville → Córdoba (B,L,D)
After meeting in Seville, we’ll transfer together to Córdoba, trading the bustle of the capital for one of Andalucía’s most atmospheric historic cities. Once checked in, the afternoon is yours to recharge before we head out for an evening walking tour. We’ll explore Córdoba’s winding streets as the light softens, with opportunities for street scenes, architectural details, and birds weaving through the old city. We’ll spend the night in Córdoba.
Day 3 – Raptors & Genets (B,L,D)
We’ll start the day with a morning session at a dedicated hide focused on a large bird of prey—either Goshawk or Bonelli’s Eagle, depending on conditions. After a midday break to rest and review images, we’ll regroup for an evening visit to a genet hide, offering a rare chance to photograph this elusive nocturnal mammal. It’s a day that blends patience, anticipation, and very different photographic challenges. We’ll return to Córdoba for the night.
Day 4 – Eagles & Drinking Pools (B,L,D)
This morning, we’ll head to another raptor hide, targeting new species such as Spanish Imperial Eagle or Griffon Vultures (final species to be confirmed). From there, we’ll transition to a busy drinking pool hide where smaller birds come in close, fast, and often—perfect for action, behavior, and creative compositions. The afternoon is free to relax back in Córdoba, wander the city, or catch up on image edits. Another night in Córdoba.
Day 5 – Osuna Farmlands → Ronda (B,L,D)
We’ll spend the morning birding across the Osuna farmlands, a productive landscape for Eurasian Rollers, Lesser Kestrels, and Collared Pratincoles. After lunch, we’ll transfer south to Ronda, dramatically perched above its famous gorge. In the evening, we’ll enjoy a walking tour that combines city exploration with opportunities for birds in flight against golden-hour light. We’ll settle in for the night in Ronda.
Day 6 – Ronda Bird Hides (B,L,D)
Today is all about making the most of Ronda’s surroundings as we rotate between two bird hides set within striking mountain scenery. We’ll work different angles, light, and behaviors, taking time to refine technique and composition. Between sessions, there’s space to slow down and enjoy the landscape that makes this region so special. We’ll spend another night in Ronda.
Day 7 – Setenil & Optional Cave Visit (B,L,D)
We’ll wander through the white village of Setenil, photographing birds as they move through town and perch against its dramatic rock-overhang architecture. The afternoon is intentionally relaxed—a chance to rest, explore independently, or simply enjoy Ronda at your own pace. We’ll spend another night in Ronda.
Day 8 – Solar Eclipse & Migration (B,L,D)
We’ll rise early and drive to the Strait of Gibraltar, positioning ourselves in one of the best locations in Spain to witness the 2027 solar eclipse. After the eclipse, we’ll shift our focus skyward once more for hawk migration, with large numbers of Black Kites and White Storks moving through the strait. It’s a powerful day where celestial and avian spectacles intersect. We’ll return to Ronda for the night.
Day 9 – Doñana → Seville (B,L)
On our final day, we’ll travel back toward Seville with a productive birding stop in the eastern sector of Doñana. This area is often rich with waterbirds, including Greater Flamingos and Black-winged Stilts, offering a strong photographic finale. From there, we’ll continue on to Seville where we'll end at the airport after one last lunch together as a group.
