Trip Description:

Join Us in the 'Land of Fire & Ice' for the 2026 Solar Eclipse!

Experience the awe-inspiring beauty of Iceland, one of the most captivating destinations on Earth. Our team of professional photographers has explored this extraordinary country every year for the past decade, capturing its stunning landscapes in every season. The photographic opportunities here are unparalleled, and we are excited to share our newest Iceland itinerary with you.

Exclusively for 2026: Total Solar Eclipse

On August 12, 2026, a Total Solar Eclipse will sweep across Iceland, and the Snæfellsnes Peninsula is directly in the path of totality. This rare celestial event promises an unforgettable experience, combining the breathtaking beauty of Iceland with the awe of witnessing a total eclipse. Our exclusive itinerary ensures you are perfectly positioned to capture this momentous event.

Discover the Snæfellsnes Peninsula

Our journey begins on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, lauded for its diverse landscapes. Here, you'll photograph the iconic Kirkjufell mountain, one of the most photographed peaks in the world. The peninsula offers a plethora of photographic subjects, from rugged coastlines and picturesque fishing villages to dramatic volcanic formations and glaciers.

Explore the Remote West Fjords

This special departure is also our only Iceland trip to include the remote and stunning West Fjords. This lesser-visited region is a treasure trove of natural wonders, featuring majestic fjords, cascading waterfalls, and abundant wildlife. You'll have the chance to possibly capture the puffin breeding grounds at Látrabjarg, the westernmost point of Iceland, where these charming birds nest. Puffins stay through mid-August so if we're lucky, we'll be able to spot them after the Eclipse! Plus, there are many other great birding locations in the West Fjords.

Small-Group Travel with Like-Minded Photographers

Our workshop is designed for small groups, ensuring an intimate and immersive experience. Travel alongside fellow photography enthusiasts and receive personalized instruction from our professional photographers. This exclusive setting fosters a collaborative and inspiring environment, perfect for honing your skills and creating lifelong memories.

What is a Total Solar Eclipse?

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon completely covers the sun, casting a shadow over the Earth and plunging the day into darkness. This extraordinary phenomenon reveals the sun's corona, a stunning halo of light that is only visible during totality. The 2026 eclipse is a once-in-a-lifetime event, offering a unique opportunity to capture the interplay of celestial bodies against Iceland's dramatic landscapes.

Natural History and Highlights

Iceland's natural history is as rich and diverse as its landscapes. From the volcanic origins that shaped its terrain to the glaciers that sculpt its valleys, Iceland is a land of geological wonders. The Snæfellsnes Peninsula, with its striking contrasts of lava fields, black sand beaches, and glistening glaciers, embodies the essence of Icelandic beauty. The West Fjords, with their remote and rugged charm, offer a glimpse into Iceland's wild heart.

Join Backcountry Journeys on our special 2026 Solar Eclipse itinerary and embark on a voyage of discovery through Iceland's timeless landscapes. Prepare to be enchanted, exhilarated, and forever transformed by the magic of this extraordinary land!

Reserve Your Spot Today

Spaces for this exclusive workshop are limited. All of our special departures for past solar eclipses have sold out within hours of announcement. Don't miss your chance to be part of this incredible adventure. Reserve your spot today and prepare for an unforgettable journey through the 'Land of Fire & Ice.'

Lodging Disclaimer - Eclipse

Lodging in Iceland is extremely limited for the eclipse dates. Because of this, we only have four Single Supplements available for this trip that will be available first-come, first-served. Once they sell out, lodging will be double occupancy only. If you are a single traveler, we will assign you a roommate based on your gender if you are unable to secure a Single Supplement.

We have a Trip A and Trip B for the Iceland Eclipse. These trips are largely the same with a slight change in lodging. The core of the itinerary and shooting locations amongst the two trips are the same.

Weather Disclaimer

Please note that while we make every effort to plan our itineraries to take advantage of the best possible weather conditions, we cannot guarantee specific weather conditions during the workshop, including during the viewing of the Total Solar Eclipse. Iceland's weather is famously unpredictable, and conditions can change rapidly. We recommend being prepared for a variety of weather scenarios and bringing appropriate gear to ensure your comfort and safety.

August is historically one of the best months for weather in Iceland, offering milder temperatures and more stable conditions. However, despite our best efforts to position ourselves in the optimal location for eclipse viewing, weather conditions on the day of the eclipse may affect visibility. Your safety and the quality of your experience are our top priorities, and we will adjust our plans as necessary to provide the best possible photographic opportunities. Thank you for understanding the inherent unpredictability of nature.

Most meals included – (B,L,D) denotes Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 1 (D)
Arrive in Iceland and check-in to your hotel in Reykjavík. Group dinner and orientation.

Day 2 (B, L, D)
Our adventure begins amidst the dramatic landscapes of Snæfellsnes, a peninsula renowned for its otherworldly beauty. We’ll wander through Arnarstapi and let the towering basalt cliffs and crashing waves captivate our senses. Next, we’ll see the haunting silhouette of the black church at Búðir and then travel to Lóndrangar with its towering volcanic formations.

Day 3 (B, L, D)
Our journey continues along the windswept shores of Djúpalónssandur black beach, and then we’ll practice different photography techniques at the Svöðufoss waterfall as it cascades gracefully into the abyss. Then, no visit to Iceland would be complete without paying homage to the iconic landmarks of Mt. Kirkjufell and Kirkjufellsfoss, their majesty immortalized in countless photographs and folktales.

Day 4 (B, L, D)
We’ll pack up our gear and head west to a new region on this day! As we traverse the rugged terrain of the West Fjords to Látrabjarg, you’ll see the legendary bird cliff where puffins and seabirds dance upon the winds if we're lucky. Day 5 (B, L, D)
This is the day we’ve all been waiting for, where we witness the celestial spectacle of a solar eclipse!

Day 6 (B, L, D)
This is another day focused on the West Fjords. We'll have some amazing locations to photograph, including a beautiful church, gorgeous sand beaches, towering sea cliffs, and the mountain fjords that surround us, oh, and not to mention waterfalls too!

Day 7 (B, L, D)
We start our morning by marveling at the towering majesty of Dynjandi waterfall. This is the largest waterfall in the region at 330 feet in height! Below this waterfall are five other waterfalls which also lend themselves to gorgeous landscape shots: Úðafoss, Háifoss, Hundafoss, Göngufoss, and Bæjarfoss. We'll also soak in the serenity of the fjords at Korpudalur with some visits to fishing villages with beautiful surrounds.

Day 8 (B, L)
As we travel back to Reykjavík, our adventure reaches a final climax amidst the twin wonders of Hraunfossar and Barnafoss, where cascading waterfalls intertwine with the ancient lore of Icelandic mythology. We will also make a stop to photograph some wild Icelandic horses (if we get lucky) before we arrive at our hotel in Reykjavík in the late afternoon. Spend your last night in Reykjavík enjoying the local sights, reviewing your many trip images, or resting before your journey home the next day.

Day 9
Transfer from the hotel in Reykjavík to Keflavik International Airport. Flights home can be booked anytime today.

Please note that the exact sequence of the itineraries on all photography trips will be based on weather and lighting conditions. The goal on these trips is to make sure we are at the right place at the right time for the perfect light on our subjects. Also, itineraries can change for a variety of other circumstances including floods, forest fires, national park closures, road closures, and more. Due to the nature of wildlife and landscape photography, we do not guarantee any specific sightings or specific compositions.
