Exclusively for 2026: Total Solar Eclipse
On August 12, 2026, a Total Solar Eclipse will sweep across Iceland, and the Snæfellsnes Peninsula is directly in the path of totality. This rare celestial event promises an unforgettable experience, combining the breathtaking beauty of Iceland with the awe of witnessing a total eclipse. Our exclusive itinerary ensures you are perfectly positioned to capture this momentous event.
Discover the Snæfellsnes Peninsula
Our journey begins on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, lauded for its diverse landscapes. Here, you'll photograph the iconic Kirkjufell mountain, one of the most photographed peaks in the world. The peninsula offers a plethora of photographic subjects, from rugged coastlines and picturesque fishing villages to dramatic volcanic formations and glaciers.
Explore the Remote West Fjords
This special departure is also our only Iceland trip to include the remote and stunning West Fjords. This lesser-visited region is a treasure trove of natural wonders, featuring majestic fjords, cascading waterfalls, and abundant wildlife. You'll have the chance to possibly capture the puffin breeding grounds at Látrabjarg, the westernmost point of Iceland, where these charming birds nest. Puffins stay through mid-August so if we're lucky, we'll be able to spot them after the Eclipse! Plus, there are many other great birding locations in the West Fjords.

What is a Total Solar Eclipse?
A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon completely covers the sun, casting a shadow over the Earth and plunging the day into darkness. This extraordinary phenomenon reveals the sun's corona, a stunning halo of light that is only visible during totality. The 2026 eclipse is a once-in-a-lifetime event, offering a unique opportunity to capture the interplay of celestial bodies against Iceland's dramatic landscapes.
Natural History and Highlights
Iceland's natural history is as rich and diverse as its landscapes. From the volcanic origins that shaped its terrain to the glaciers that sculpt its valleys, Iceland is a land of geological wonders. The Snæfellsnes Peninsula, with its striking contrasts of lava fields, black sand beaches, and glistening glaciers, embodies the essence of Icelandic beauty. The West Fjords, with their remote and rugged charm, offer a glimpse into Iceland's wild heart.
Join Backcountry Journeys on our special 2026 Solar Eclipse itinerary and embark on a voyage of discovery through Iceland's timeless landscapes. Prepare to be enchanted, exhilarated, and forever transformed by the magic of this extraordinary land!

Lodging Disclaimer - Eclipse
Lodging in Iceland is extremely limited for the eclipse dates. Because of this, we only have four Single Supplements available for this trip that will be available first-come, first-served. Once they sell out, lodging will be double occupancy only. If you are a single traveler, we will assign you a roommate based on your gender if you are unable to secure a Single Supplement.
We have a Trip A and Trip B for the Iceland Eclipse. These trips are largely the same with a slight change in lodging. The core of the itinerary and shooting locations amongst the two trips are the same.
Weather Disclaimer
Please note that while we make every effort to plan our itineraries to take advantage of the best possible weather conditions, we cannot guarantee specific weather conditions during the workshop, including during the viewing of the Total Solar Eclipse. Iceland's weather is famously unpredictable, and conditions can change rapidly. We recommend being prepared for a variety of weather scenarios and bringing appropriate gear to ensure your comfort and safety.
August is historically one of the best months for weather in Iceland, offering milder temperatures and more stable conditions. However, despite our best efforts to position ourselves in the optimal location for eclipse viewing, weather conditions on the day of the eclipse may affect visibility. Your safety and the quality of your experience are our top priorities, and we will adjust our plans as necessary to provide the best possible photographic opportunities. Thank you for understanding the inherent unpredictability of nature.
