Venture deep into Iceland’s untamed south coast on a winter photography adventure designed for those who seek dramatic light, elusive wildlife, and surreal Arctic landscapes. From the black sand beaches of Vík to the glacier-carved valleys of Þórsmörk, this immersive journey takes you far beyond the tourist trail—into a raw, remote, and rewarding photographic experience.
At the heart of the trip is the elusive Arctic Fox—Iceland’s only native land mammal and one of the most striking wildlife subjects in the North. In early spring, foxes are still in their full winter coats, either pure white or deep chocolate brown depending on their morph. We’ll spend multiple days in known fox territories, guided by experts who understand local behaviors and individual fox ranges. While no wildlife can be guaranteed, sightings on this trip are highly probable, offering rare opportunities to capture these intelligent and curious animals in their natural habitat—often framed by snowfields, lava rock, and soft Arctic light.
One of the most visually thrilling chapters of this workshop is our multi-day exploration of Þórsmörk—a secluded valley tucked between three glaciers and only accessible via rugged Superjeep river crossings. This dramatic region of twisted birch, mossy lava fields, sweeping ridgelines, and snow-covered peaks offers not only excellent chances for fox encounters, but also minimalist winter landscapes under moody skies, golden-hour snow glow, and occasional mist-draped magic.
Beyond the foxes and Þórsmörk, we’ll venture to Kötlujökull Glacier, where we photograph glowing blue ice caves—some of the most otherworldly natural spaces on the planet. The journey also includes seabird cliffs, seasonal ptarmigan in mottled plumage, steaming geothermal vents, cascading waterfalls, and the long, stark beaches of the South Coast.
And then there’s the night sky. Early spring is one of the best times of year for aurora photography, with longer nights, increasing solar activity, and travel dates aligned with the spring equinox—historically one of the most active periods for the Northern Lights. With dark skies and the mobility of our private Superjeeps, we’ll be in the right places should the aurora come alive overhead.
Whether you’re drawn by the Arctic Fox, the dreamlike ice caves, or the thrill of chasing aurora across Iceland’s winter wilderness, this trip delivers rare access, expert instruction, and the chance to capture truly once-in-a-lifetime images.
