Trip Description:

Venture deep into Iceland’s untamed south coast on a winter photography adventure designed for those who seek dramatic light, elusive wildlife, and surreal Arctic landscapes. From the black sand beaches of Vík to the glacier-carved valleys of Þórsmörk, this immersive journey takes you far beyond the tourist trail—into a raw, remote, and rewarding photographic experience.

At the heart of the trip is the elusive Arctic Fox—Iceland’s only native land mammal and one of the most striking wildlife subjects in the North. In early spring, foxes are still in their full winter coats, either pure white or deep chocolate brown depending on their morph. We’ll spend multiple days in known fox territories, guided by experts who understand local behaviors and individual fox ranges. While no wildlife can be guaranteed, sightings on this trip are highly probable, offering rare opportunities to capture these intelligent and curious animals in their natural habitat—often framed by snowfields, lava rock, and soft Arctic light.

One of the most visually thrilling chapters of this workshop is our multi-day exploration of Þórsmörk—a secluded valley tucked between three glaciers and only accessible via rugged Superjeep river crossings. This dramatic region of twisted birch, mossy lava fields, sweeping ridgelines, and snow-covered peaks offers not only excellent chances for fox encounters, but also minimalist winter landscapes under moody skies, golden-hour snow glow, and occasional mist-draped magic.

Beyond the foxes and Þórsmörk, we’ll venture to Kötlujökull Glacier, where we photograph glowing blue ice caves—some of the most otherworldly natural spaces on the planet. The journey also includes seabird cliffs, seasonal ptarmigan in mottled plumage, steaming geothermal vents, cascading waterfalls, and the long, stark beaches of the South Coast.
And then there’s the night sky. Early spring is one of the best times of year for aurora photography, with longer nights, increasing solar activity, and travel dates aligned with the spring equinox—historically one of the most active periods for the Northern Lights. With dark skies and the mobility of our private Superjeeps, we’ll be in the right places should the aurora come alive overhead.

Whether you’re drawn by the Arctic Fox, the dreamlike ice caves, or the thrill of chasing aurora across Iceland’s winter wilderness, this trip delivers rare access, expert instruction, and the chance to capture truly once-in-a-lifetime images.

 Trip Itinerary

Most meals included – (B,L,D) denotes Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 1: Arrival in Reykjavík (D)
We’ll arrive in Iceland and then we'll be transferred to our hotel in Reykjavík. After settling in, we’ll have time to explore the charming capital, grab a bite to eat, and get to know our fellow travelers as we prepare for the exciting adventure ahead.

Day 2: South Coast Landscapes and Our First Foxes (B,L,D)
This morning, we’ll head out toward Iceland’s dramatic south coast, stopping at some stunning photographic locations along the way. As we get closer to Arctic Fox country, we’ll keep our eyes open for early sightings. We’ll spend the night at Stracta Hotel, well-positioned for the days of adventure to come.

Days 3–5: Into Þórsmörk and Arctic Fox Territory (B,L,D)
Over the next three days, we’ll dive deep into Iceland’s rugged interior aboard our private Superjeep vehicles, heading into the remote and wild Þórsmörk (Thórsmörk) region. Here, among canyons, rivers, and mossy volcanic landscapes, we’ll spend time searching for and photographing wild Arctic Foxes in their natural environment. We’ll take advantage of dramatic light and epic terrain to create unique wildlife and landscape images, returning each evening to the comfort of Stracta Hotel.

Day 6: Glacier Adventure and Ice Caves (B,L,D)
Today we’ll continue the adventure with a Superjeep excursion to Kötlujökull Glacier, where we’ll explore stunning ice caves and search for more Arctic Foxes in this surreal, frozen environment. It’s a chance to capture some of the most ethereal and otherworldly scenes Iceland has to offer. We’ll overnight in the nearby town of Vík, surrounded by black sand beaches and sea cliffs.

Day 7: Seabirds, Black Sands, and Off-Road Exploration (B,L,D)
We’ll spend the day exploring the Vík region’s diverse coastal ecosystems, from off-road Superjeep access to remote black sand beaches to searching for rock ptarmigan and nesting seabirds along the cliffs. The contrasts of color, texture, and light here make for fantastic photo opportunities as we wrap up our southern adventure.

Day 8: Return to Reykjavík via the Golden Circle (B,L,D)
As we make our way back to Reykjavík, we’ll travel part of the famed Golden Circle route, stopping at some of Iceland’s most iconic landscapes along the way. It’s a final chance to capture waterfalls, geothermal features, and vast vistas before returning to the city for our last evening together.

Day 9: Departure Day (B)
After breakfast, we’ll transfer to the airport and say our goodbyes, heading home with memory cards full of Arctic wildlife, icy adventures, and Iceland’s one-of-a-kind landscapes.

Please note that the exact sequence of the itineraries on all photography trips will be based on weather and lighting conditions. The goal on these trips is to make sure we are at the right place at the right time for the perfect light on our subjects. Also, itineraries can change for a variety of other circumstances including floods, forest fires, national park closures, road closures, and more. Due to the nature of wildlife and landscape photography, we do not guarantee any specific sightings or specific compositions.
