This trip is categorized as a Level 2 because there will be some hiking in Finland's beautiful polar climate. There are physical elements in this trip that are not normally included in our Level 1 trips: we will enjoy a few 20-30-minute walks across the frozen terrain of Riisitunturi National Park, as well as a 45-minute snowshoe hike to the top of Kuertunturi at sunrise (1.5 miles roundtrip). 

Day 1: Arrival (D)
Touch down at Kuusamo Airport where the adventure begins! You'll be whisked away to the charming village of Ruka, nestled perfectly for our week's photographic pursuits. Our first session kicks off in the late afternoon, capturing the enchanting golden light. If weather allows, we’ll end all our evenings with a photo session capturing the Northern Lights. We work around the weather forecast for the week, so we’ll optimize our schedule to accommodate the best viewing conditions.

Day 2: Iconic Riisitunturi National Park (B, D)
Rise early for a hearty breakfast before venturing into the heart of Lapland: Riisitunturi National Park. This iconic landscape, often featured in photos of Lapland, offers a serene 30-minute hike among snow-laden conifer trees, leading to a hilltop of frozen sculptures. Immerse yourself in the surreal beauty and capture the essence of this winter wonderland.

Day 3: Frozen Rapids of Myllykoski (B, D)
Day three takes us to the frozen rapids of Myllykoski. With endless opportunities for creative compositions, from the quaint barn by the river to swirling ice patterns, this location is a photographer's dream. Keep your telephoto lens handy for a chance to snap shots of the playful White-throated Dippers amidst the icy scenery.

Day 4: Return to Riisitunturi (B, D)
We return to Riisitunturi National Park, dedicating another day to explore and capture the frozen marvels. Experiment with different angles and compositions as you delve deeper into the park's icy beauty, perfecting your photographic skills.

Day 5: Snowmobile Adventure to Kuntivaara (B, D)
Today’s thrilling adventure involves a snowmobile ride to Kuntivaara, near the Russian border. This region, similar to Riisitunturi but with denser trees, promises stunning shots of the famous frozen trees of Lapland. The hour-long snowmobile journey each way, and the six-hour tour, offer ample daylight to capture this winter wonderland.

Day 6: Journey to Äkäslompolo (B, D)
After a final breakfast in Ruka, embark on a scenic drive to the picturesque mountain town of Äkäslompolo. Here, you'll visit the half-frozen river Äkäsmylly, perfect for refining your composition techniques. As night falls, return to capture the Northern Lights reflected in the river’s serene waters.

Day 7: Sunrise Snowshoe Hike (B, D)
Our last full day begins pre-dawn with a snowshoe hike up Kuertunturi. This 45-minute trek leads to a summit adorned with snow-covered trees, offering breathtaking morning views. Spend as much time as the cold allows, capturing the serene beauty of Lapland's fabled landscapes.

Day 8: Departure Day (B)
Enjoy one last breakfast together before departing for Kittilä. Reflect on the incredible shots and unforgettable memories as you bid farewell to your workshop leaders and the enchanting Lapland. This journey may end, but the magic of your winter adventure in Finland will linger in your heart and your photos forever.
