Trip Description:
Welcome to Backcountry Journeys' Columbia River Gorge: Waterfalls, Wildflowers, & Seascapes photo workshop, where adventure meets creativity and nature's beauty is yours to capture. Join us on a journey through one of the Pacific Northwest's most iconic landscapes, where the Columbia River meanders through towering cliffs, lush forests, and cascading waterfalls. Plus, we'll spend two nights on the northern Oregon Coast, at one of Oregon's most famous beaches - Cannon Beach.

Over six unforgettable days, our experienced photography guides will lead you to some of the Gorge's most scenic spots. From the misty spray of Multnomah Falls to the vivid colors of Columbia Hills in full bloom, this workshop offers endless possibilities for creative exploration and artistic expression. There's so much diversity to photograph on this trip.

In spring, the Columbia River Gorge comes alive with lush greens and the surrounding hills bloom with
balsamroot and lupine - but you have to know where to go! Leave that to our guides who have been photographing the Gorge and the Pacific Northwest for years. We know the icons and the hidden gems.

A big focus of this workshop will be waterfalls and long exposure photography. The Gorge features some of the best waterfalls in the United States, there are 90 waterfalls alone on the Oregon side and the Washington side has some great ones too. We'll spend time photographing giant falls, small cascades, and everything in between.

And that's not all – we'll also take a journey to the coast and visit iconic Cannon Beach, where you'll have the chance to capture the rugged beauty of the Oregon Coast. With its towering sea stacks and dramatic sunsets, this is a photographer's dream come true. Cannon Beach is central to many great spots along the northern Oregon Coast. We'll check out a lighthouse or two and even photograph a hidden beach where a waterfall cascades into the ocean.

This is always a very productive trip. You'll have the chance to bolster your portfolio with tons of images, from waterfalls to wildflowers to seascapes. There will also be opportunities to photograph Oregon's Mount Hood with wildflower blooms.

Our Columbia River Gorge photo workshop promises to be an unforgettable experience. So grab your camera and join us for an adventure through some of the Pacific Northwest's most iconic landscapes!

 Trip Itinerary

Most meals included – (B,L,D) denotes Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 1 (Travel Day)(D)

Arrive to Portland, Oregon and transfer to the starting hotel. We will meet at 5:00 pm local time for orientation and dinner.

Days 2 - 3 (B,L,D)

We'll depart from Portland and head to the beautiful Hood River area, where we'll stay the next few nights. This area is adjacent to the Columbia River Gorge and boasts one of the highest densities of waterfalls in the USA. We'll spend our days exploring the 'Gorge' and photographing waterfalls, cascades, and even Mount Hood! Spring brings wildflowers blooms to the surrounding hills and savannahs of the Gorge and we'll spend time photographing the best blooms during golden hour light. These wildflowers sometime line up with Mount Hood for spectacular shots.

Expect lots of photography with a lot of diverse locations.

Days 4 - 5 (B,L,D)

We'll spend the morning of Day 4 visiting some final waterfalls in the Gorge and then we'll head out to the rugged northern Oregon Coast. We'll spend the next two nights staying in the Cannon Beach area. Cannon Beach is not only one of the most scenic Oregon beaches, but it is nearby many other great seascapes.

We'll spend sunrise and sunset along the coast, plus we'll visit a lighthouse and quaint coastal town or two. Expect some image review and post processing mid-day during this period.

Day 6 (B)

We'll photograph sunrise along the coast, get breakfast, and then make our way back to Portland. Expect to be back in the Portland area around 12 pm.
Please note that the exact sequence of the itineraries on all photography trips will be based on weather and lighting conditions. The goal on these trips is to make sure we are at the right place at the right time for the perfect light on our subjects. Also, itineraries can change for a variety of other circumstances including floods, forest fires, national park closures, road closures, and more. Due to the nature of wildlife and landscape photography, we do not guarantee any specific sightings or specific compositions.

Testimonials From Our Customers
Julie K.
"I have traveled with Backcountry Journeys (BCJ) several times over the last 4 years to Glacier NP, Costa Rica (2x), Smoky Mountains NP, Joshua Tree, Zion and Bryce NPs, and most recently to Alaska.

Every trip with BCJ has been an outstanding experience. The guides are professional photographers who put the experience of the guests first. They are willing to provide as much hands on help as you need/want. The guides are also extremely knowledgeable and well trained in wilderness safety as well as the areas they guide.

BCJ trips are well run from the time of reservation through the entire trip. They will take you to great places and find great photographic opportunities."

"BCJ provides an outstanding experience for photographers of all levels of experience/expertise. Each day's excursion is well planned-out and the guides always have a back-up plan if the weather is less than cooperative.

I have now been on 5 trips and each one seems better than the last. I find the guides to be very helpful and personable. The guides provide the level of hands-on assistance each participant wants.

The accommodations are always good, taking into consideration what each particular destination has to offer. I plan to continue doing these trips with BCJ and can't recommend them highly enough."

"I have now been on 8 trips with Backcountry Journeys. I love traveling with this company, as I am a woman traveling alone, and all I have to do is show up and they take care of everything else.

They have wonderful, caring, helpful, FUN, and knowledgeable guides who make the days fly by. They get us to the best photography sites possible and are always willing to help with anything and answer all questions.

We stay in great places and there is always too much wonderful food! I have met other travelers on their trips who will be friends for life, plus the guides are more than guides--they become friends too. I know I will be doing more traveling with them in the future."
