Trip Description:
Prepare to be captivated by the breathtaking beauty of Glacier National Park, a majestic mountain region that has earned its reputation as one of the world's most stunning natural landscapes. Nestled within the Lewis & Livingston Ranges of Montana's Rocky Mountains, this park is a photographer's paradise, offering a diverse range of landscapes, from towering peaks to glacially carved lakes and valleys.

As you embark on this unforgettable journey, you'll have the opportunity to explore Glacier National Park during the vibrant summer months. Abundant flora, including Glacier's signature Beargrass and vibrant wildflowers like Indian Paintbrush, Glacier Lily, and Fireweed, create a kaleidoscope of colors against the backdrop of snow-capped peaks. The longer days of summer grant us extended magical photography sessions during the captivating golden hours.

Immerse yourself in the intact ecosystem of the "Crown of the Continent Ecosystem," which showcases the same unspoiled plant and animal species that thrived during the time of European contact. Witness the park's abundant wildlife as they become more active during this time of year, while dramatic skies and pristine mountain reflections create stunning compositions in the park's lakes and rivers.

Capture iconic locations such as the legendary Going-to-the-Sun Road and the awe-inspiring Lake MacDonald, with its jagged mountain panorama. Explore the alpine artistry of Many Glacier and experience the ethereal beauty of St. Mary's Lake at sunrise, considered one of the most photogenic lakes on Earth.

Glacier National Park is a visual feast for photographers, offering surreal landscapes, roaring waterfalls, brilliant night skies, and the dramatic drama of summer storms. You'll not only expand your knowledge of the park's rich history, flora, and fauna but also leave with an impressive collection of images that showcase the park's unparalleled beauty.

Whether you prefer a standard or a more adventurous hiking-focused experience, we have options to cater to your preferences. Join Backcountry Journeys on this once-in-a-lifetime journey to Glacier National Park, Montana, and discover why it is known as "The Last Best Place."

Please note: We offer both standard and "Hiker" versions of this trip. If you're unsure which option suits you best, don't hesitate to give us a call at 928-478-1521.

 Trip Itinerary

Most meals included – (B,L,D) denotes Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 1 (Travel Day) (D)

Arrive at Kalispell International Airport today and transfer to your awaiting hotel in the beautiful & historic Montana town of Whitefish, MT. We will have an orientation dinner and meet the group.

Day 2 (B,L,D)

We will arrive on the shores of Lake McDonald before sunrise to capture the rising light over this unfathomably beautiful lake. After a session of photography, we’ll grab breakfast at Apgar Village. Then we will embark on a great hike to the scenic local of Avalanche lake. This evening we’ll have another magic-hour session before retiring to our comfortable lodge.

Day 3 (B,D)

We will arise early to capture the morning light at an accessible landscape location in the park. During the day when the light is not as optimal for shooting, we will spend time working on photography techniques. Then in the evening we will head out for another unforgettable evening shoot!

Day 4 (B,L,D)

This morning we’ll capture the rising sun over Lake St. Mary’s in the cool mountain air – one of the most spectacular events to witness as well as photograph. We will have breakfast at a nearby lodge. Afterwards we’ll head over to our lodge. Our evening session will focus on a dramatic alpine lake in the Many Glacier Region of the park. After a long productive day in the field it’s time to kick back and enjoy a great meal in our lodge!

Day 5 (B,L,D)

This morning we’ll rise early for our photo session along the ruggedly beautiful Swift Current River. This river winds through a massive glacially carved valley and reflects the majestic peaks around it in the right light. Absolutely beautiful.
During the midday sun we will retire to our lodge and review photographs from the trip thus far. And, perhaps, time and interest permitting we will practice macro techniques on the various wildflowers in the park.
After photographing a high mountain lake in the evening light we’ll return to our lodging in the fading light for a fantastic last dinner in Glacier National Park.

Day 6 (B)

We’ll finish our trip with one last morning session in the park and then shuttle back to Kalispell airport.
Please note that the exact sequence of the itineraries on all photography trips will be based on weather and lighting conditions. The goal on these trips is to make sure we are at the right place at the right time for the perfect light on our subjects. Also, itineraries can change for a variety of other circumstances including floods, forest fires, national park closures, road closures, and more. Due to the nature of wildlife and landscape photography, we do not guarantee any specific sightings or specific compositions.

Testimonials From Our Customers
Julie K.
"I have traveled with Backcountry Journeys (BCJ) several times over the last 4 years to Glacier NP, Costa Rica (2x), Smoky Mountains NP, Joshua Tree, Zion and Bryce NPs, and most recently to Alaska.

Every trip with BCJ has been an outstanding experience. The guides are professional photographers who put the experience of the guests first. They are willing to provide as much hands on help as you need/want. The guides are also extremely knowledgeable and well trained in wilderness safety as well as the areas they guide.

BCJ trips are well run from the time of reservation through the entire trip. They will take you to great places and find great photographic opportunities."

"BCJ provides an outstanding experience for photographers of all levels of experience/expertise. Each day's excursion is well planned-out and the guides always have a back-up plan if the weather is less than cooperative.

I have now been on 5 trips and each one seems better than the last. I find the guides to be very helpful and personable. The guides provide the level of hands-on assistance each participant wants.

The accommodations are always good, taking into consideration what each particular destination has to offer. I plan to continue doing these trips with BCJ and can't recommend them highly enough."

"I have now been on 8 trips with Backcountry Journeys. I love traveling with this company, as I am a woman traveling alone, and all I have to do is show up and they take care of everything else.

They have wonderful, caring, helpful, FUN, and knowledgeable guides who make the days fly by. They get us to the best photography sites possible and are always willing to help with anything and answer all questions.

We stay in great places and there is always too much wonderful food! I have met other travelers on their trips who will be friends for life, plus the guides are more than guides--they become friends too. I know I will be doing more traveling with them in the future."
