Exclusive access to remote Santo Amaro: Photograph dunes and lagoons in a quieter, less-visited part of the park where few travelers venture.
Dynamic landscapes found nowhere else on Earth: Capture Lençóis Maranhenses’ rare mix of sweeping white dunes and turquoise rain-fed lagoons, a phenomenon that exists only for a few months each year.
Unforgettable astrophotography opportunities: Shoot the Milky Way arching over the dunes under some of Brazil’s clearest, most pristine skies.
Multiple perspectives, from ground to sky: Explore the park on foot at sunrise and sunset, then opt for aerial photography flights to capture abstract dune-and-lagoon patterns from above.
Lençóis Maranhenses National Park is one of the most unique and otherworldly landscapes on the planet. Spanning nearly 600 square miles in northern Brazil, it’s a surreal mosaic of brilliant white sand dunes and seasonal rain-fed lagoons. What makes this place extraordinary is its impermanence—the lagoons exist only a few months of the year, creating a fleeting ecosystem that transforms constantly with the seasons and light. For photographers, it’s an opportunity to capture a natural phenomenon that few will ever witness in its prime.
An Emerging Photography Destination
Lençóis is just beginning to appear on the radar of adventurous photographers, which means this is your chance to be among the first to capture it. While tourism is only now growing, the park remains largely untouched and unphotographed compared to other global icons. The images you create here will feel fresh and rare, standing apart from the typical portfolios that focus on more well-trodden destinations.
Sunrise, Sunset & Beyond
Unlike standard tours that offer quick daytime visits, this photo workshop is designed around optimal light. We’ll be in the dunes for sunrise and sunset, when colors and shadows transform the landscape into something magical. Optional scenic flights provide an aerial perspective of abstract dune-and-lagoon patterns impossible to capture from the ground. We also highly recommend bringing a drone—this location is a dream for aerial photography.
Hidden Gems: Rivers & Reflections
Beyond the lagoons, we’ll explore areas like the Rio Negro (Black River), where tannin-rich waters create surreal, painterly reflections. This stretch of river is rarely visited by tourists, but it offers incredible opportunities for unique compositions that combine water, sand, and sky in unexpected ways.
The Night Sky Potential
Far removed from light pollution, Lençóis also has outstanding astro potential. Under clear skies, the Milky Way arcs above the white dunes, creating an unforgettable juxtaposition of sand and stars. With expert guidance, you’ll learn how to capture these rare astrophotography scenes—something most visitors never experience.
A Portfolio Unlike Any Other
By the end of the trip, you’ll return not just with beautiful images, but with a portfolio that reflects a destination very few photographers have documented in depth. This isn’t a quick snapshot experience—it’s a deep dive into a fragile, fleeting ecosystem, at the best moments of light and from the most exclusive vantage points.

Day 3 (B,L,D)
We’ll kick off the day with a sunrise shoot near Barreirinhas, making the most of the soft morning light across the landscape. For those who haven’t yet taken to the skies, there’s another chance later in the day to enjoy an optional aerial photography flight. In the afternoon, we continue our journey deeper into the park, driving to the village of Santo Amaro—a quiet, welcoming spot that will be our home for the night.
Day 4 (B,L,D)
We’ll set out early in the morning for a full day immersed in the heart of Lençóis Maranhenses. The sweeping dunes and turquoise lagoons create endless subjects as their colors and textures change with the shifting light. After returning to the village for breakfast and a short break, we’ll head back out in the afternoon to continue exploring with our cameras. Once darkness settles in, we’ll venture out again—this time for an unforgettable astrophotography session beneath some of the clearest, star-filled skies you’ll ever see.

Day 6 (B,L,D)
We’ll begin the day with another sunrise shoot in the heart of the park, where the soft morning light transforms the dunes and lagoons into a dreamlike scene. After capturing the early glow, we’ll return to the village for a hearty breakfast before setting out to the mysterious Black River. This striking location is known for its surreal patterns, bold colors, and intricate natural textures—perfect for creating abstract, artistic images. After lunch back in the village, we’ll head out once more into the dunes for a sunset session, watching the landscape glow under golden light. As darkness settles in, the clear, unpolluted skies provide another chance to explore astrophotography. We’ll spend the night again at our comfortable hotel in Santo Amaro.
Day 7 (B,L)
On the final day of our adventure, we’ll rise early for one last sunrise session, capturing the golden light as it sweeps across the dunes and shimmers on the lagoons—a fitting farewell to this surreal landscape. Afterward, we’ll return to Santo Amaro to freshen up and pack before beginning the drive back to São Luís, ensuring arrival at São Luís International Airport (SLZ) by 2 PM for your flight home.
Scenic Flight & Drone Photography Disclaimer
During this workshop, guests will have the opportunity for optional scenic flights over Lençóis Maranhenses. These flights are an incredible way to photograph the vast dune-and-lagoon patterns from above and provide a perspective that cannot be captured on the ground.
We also encourage guests to bring drones, as drone photography is permitted in most areas of the trip and offers unique creative opportunities.
