Trip Description:

Join us on a spectacular journey to the world's best landscape photography destination - Patagonia's Fitz Roy & Cerro Torre! Our exclusive outfitted camping workshop focuses on the iconic peaks of Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre, offering you the chance to capture some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the world during the vibrant fall season. With private outfitted camps as your base, you'll experience the perfect blend of comfort and wilderness. We have spent considerable time photographing and scouting these areas, and we're proud to bring you the best itinerary and trip that focuses on Argentina's beautiful Patagonia region.

Nestled in the Argentine Patagonia, El Chaltén is a paradise for photographers and outdoor enthusiasts. Known as the trekking capital of Argentina, this region boasts some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in the world. The towering peaks of Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre dominate the skyline, providing a dramatic backdrop for your photography journey.

Fitz Roy, with its sharp, jagged silhouette, is renowned for its stunning sunrise and sunset views, casting a golden glow on its granite faces. Cerro Torre, with its needle-like spire, often shrouded in clouds, adds an element of mystery and awe to the landscape. The fall season brings an explosion of color, with the lenga forests turning brilliant shades of red, orange, and yellow, creating a photographer's dream.

Why Choose This Trip?

Unlike other tours that cram both Torres del Paine in Chile and El Chaltén into a rushed itinerary, our trip focuses exclusively on the El Chaltén area. This allows for ample time to explore and photograph these iconic peaks, ensuring you have the best weather conditions and light for your images. Our extensive scouting in the area has proven this approach successful, giving you the best chance to capture stunning photographs without the pressure of a tight schedule.

Camping in Comfort:

This is an outfitted camping trip, but our private camps are designed for comfort and convenience. Our two camps are located in the heart of the best photo ops in the region. We provide all camping equipment and meals, including spacious tents with comfortable mattresses, an outhouse with toilet and wash area, and a beautiful communal area inside a dome. Our glamping setup ensures you can relax and recharge after a day of hiking and shooting, making the most of your time in the backcountry.

At camps there is no way to charge camera batteries so make sure you bring enough. We will have one day in the middle of the trip back in town where we can charge. We also have had a good experience charging batteries with solar chargers and battery packs. This usually will only work for a battery or two, but it is an option if your camera is chargeable via USB or USB-C. Please inquire for more information.

Hike Information:

This is a Level 3 trip.

You will need to carry all of your gear. Porters are available at an extra cost ($150-200 depending on your requirements). There are two services available, one is a point-to-point service where your gear is taken from location to location ($150), and the other is where the porter will carry your gear and hike with you ($200).

The major hikes we will do are outlined below. The longest days will be our treks to our established camps, El Chaltén - Poincenot and El Chaltén - Laguna Torre. Once we arrive at our respective camps, there are many photo opps in close proximity.

  • Day 3: El Chaltén – Poincenot Campsite: 5.5 miles on trail, 1516 ft. elevation gain,  ~4 hours

  • Day 6: Poincenot Campsite – El Chaltén: 5.5 miles on trail, -1516 ft. elevation loss,  ~4 hours

  • Day 7: El Chaltén – Laguna Torre Campsite: 5.5 miles on trail, 1755 ft. elevation gain,  ~4 hours

  • Day 9: Laguna Torre Campsite – El Chaltén: 5.5 miles on trail, -1755 ft. elevation loss,  ~4 hours

Join us for an unparalleled journey through one of the world's most photogenic landscapes. Capture the essence of Patagonia with expert guidance and create memories that will last a lifetime. Book your spot on the El Chaltén Photo Adventure today!

Travel Information:

Reaching El Calafate, the gateway to your El Chaltén adventure, can sometimes be a bit challenging, but we are here to help you navigate the best options.

Direct Flights: If you can find a direct flight to El Calafate that works for you, that is still the best option. However, direct flights can be limited and may not always fit your schedule or budget.

Booking Your Flights: The most straightforward way to get to El Calafate is by flying into Buenos Aires first. There are two main airports in Buenos Aires: Ezeiza International Airport (EZE) and Aeroparque Jorge Newbery (AEP), a domestic airport. Here are some tips to plan your journey:

  1. Fly to Buenos Aires:

    • Book a flight to Buenos Aires. You can fly into either EZE or AEP, but EZE is the primary international gateway.
  2. Overnight Stay in Buenos Aires:

    • Upon arrival in Buenos Aires, consider staying overnight. This allows you to rest and reduces the stress of making a tight connection. There are numerous comfortable hotels near both airports, making it convenient for a short stay.
  3. Domestic Flight to El Calafate:

    • The next day, take a domestic flight from AEP, which has multiple departures to El Calafate (FTE) daily. AEP is conveniently located close to the city center and offers frequent connections to El Calafate. EZE also offers departures to El Calafate, but these departures are not scheduled every day.

Why This Route?

  • Convenience: Splitting your journey into two segments often proves more convenient and less stressful.
  • Cost-Effectiveness: Booking a one-way international flight to Buenos Aires and a separate one-way domestic flight to El Calafate can be more economical.
  • Flexibility: With multiple daily flights from AEP to El Calafate, you have the flexibility to choose a departure time that suits your schedule.

Transfers and Accommodations:

  • Taxi Transfers: Taxis are readily available at both EZE and AEP, providing easy and reliable transportation between the airports and your hotel.
  • Hotels: There are several excellent hotels near both EZE and AEP, catering to different budgets and preferences. These hotels offer comfortable accommodations and are ideal for a layover before your flight to El Calafate.

For more detailed travel assistance or recommendations on accommodations and transfers, please do not hesitate to inquire. We are here to ensure your journey to El Calafate is as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

Day 1 (D)

Arrive to El Calafate, Argentina. Transfers from the airport to the arrival hotel will be arranged. We will meet in the evening for orientation and dinner.

Day 2 (B,D)

We will travel to El Chalten, the gateway to Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre. Once we arrive, we'll do a session at the nearby Chorrillo del Salto, which is an incredibly waterfall draped in fall color at this time of year.

Afterwards, we'll check into our hotel in El Chalten and head out to shoot sunset along the Rio Vuelta, which provides a perfect composition when paired with towering Fitz Roy.

Days 3 - 5 (B,L,D)

On Day 3, we'll hike to our exclusive fixed camp near the base of Mount Fitz Roy in the Poincenot area. This area is home to alpine lakes, rushing rivers, expansive flats, and some of the best fall color you'll ever photograph in your life. We'll spend the next few days in this area exploring and photographing all the amazing sights. Our camping excursion is fully-outfitted, with all camping equipment provided, plus great glamping facilities and meals.

Day 6 (B,L)

We'll hike back to El Chalten after sunrise and check into our hotel for the night once we return. This night will allow us to refresh before heading out to Laguna Torre. Dinner will be on your own this evening and this is your chance to experience El Chalten. We will provide recommendations and there are plenty of dining options nearby, including our hotel.

Days 7 - 8 (B,L,D)

We'll hike to our exclusive fixed camp near Laguna Torre, which provides the best views of Cerro Torre. We'll spend the next few days capturing Cerro Torre with a variety of foregrounds. The fall color is also excellent in this area, plus we have a lagoon with icebergs, a rushing river, and some alpine views to capture. Prepare to be amazed by this area!

Day 9 (B,L,D)

We'll shoot sunrise at Laguna Torre then hike out back to El Chalten. Once we arrive we'll transfer back to El Calafate and check into our hotel. In the evening, we'll gather for one final group dinner.

Day 10

Airport transfers will be provided on Day 10 and return flights can be booked for any time.

Please note that the exact sequence of the itineraries on all photography trips will be based on weather and lighting conditions. The goal on these trips is to make sure we are at the right place at the right time for the perfect light on our subjects. Also, itineraries can change for a variety of other circumstances including floods, forest fires, national park closures, road closures, and more. Due to the nature of wildlife and landscape photography, we do not guarantee any specific sightings or specific compositions.
