Trip Description:

The Valdés Peninsula of Argentina harbors one of the most extraordinary wildlife spectacles on Earth, a place where a small, highly specialized population of orca has mastered the art of intentional stranding, hurling themselves onto the Patagonian shoreline to ambush sea lion pups in the surf. This behavior exists nowhere else on the planet with such consistency or intensity. For wildlife photographers, witnessing these apex predators explode from the water is one of the rarest and most exciting encounters nature can offer.

On this exclusive expedition, we spend eight full days in the legendary coastline surrounding Punta Norte, based at a remote working sheep estancia situated deep within the core of the orca’s hunting territory. Storied, isolated, and largely unknown outside the world of elite wildlife filmmaking, this property has quietly become one of the most important staging grounds in natural history documentation, hosting production teams from the BBC, National Geographic, Disney, Discovery, and countless others drawn here by the same extraordinary predatory theater we hope to witness and photograph.

What makes this opportunity especially remarkable is how limited access truly is. The estancia itself is extremely small, intimate, and highly selective about who it works with. This is not a destination that can realistically be replicated by independent travelers simply showing up and hoping for success. Access to the property, the beaches, the viewing strategies, and the decades of accumulated field knowledge depends almost entirely on trusted relationships. Through our exceptional local partnership in Patagonia, we have been granted the rare opportunity to bring a very small group of photographers into this world and experience one of nature’s most miraculous wildlife events from inside the ecosystem itself.

Much of the most productive orca activity in the region unfolds not on the public viewing areas, but along the private coastline of the estancia itself, land stewarded by the same family for generations. It was here, decades ago, that the estancia’s owner and family first began recognizing the extraordinary intentional stranding behavior occurring along their beaches. Through years of patient observation, experimentation, and time in the field, they helped pioneer many of the modern viewing and positioning strategies now used to responsibly observe and document these hunts.

Importantly, our expedition timing is not arbitrary. We have intentionally scheduled this workshop during one of the historically strongest windows of orca activity along the Valdés coastline. Based on more than a decade of documented sightings and intentional stranding events at Punta Norte, the period from roughly April 20–23 has consistently produced some of the highest concentrations of activity, with several dates historically recording sightings in nearly 70–80% of observed seasons. We'll position ourselves directly in the field through the heart of this historically productive period while also allowing flexibility on either side as conditions, tides, and sea lion activity evolve.

Of course, nature offers no guarantees here. Orca behavior remains entirely wild and unpredictable, which is precisely what makes this experience so compelling. Some days may bring brief offshore encounters, while others can erupt into prolonged hunting sequences lasting hours as pods repeatedly work the shoreline in front of us. But the long-term consistency of activity during this timeframe is a major reason why elite wildlife filmmakers and researchers continue returning to Punta Norte year after year.

Life here revolves entirely around the rhythm of the coastline. Each day begins before first light as we move out to patrol remote pebble beaches, elevated coastal lookouts, and the storied Faro lighthouse, whose beam sweeps across the very waters where hunts unfold.

The orca are the centerpiece, but the Valdés Peninsula delivers exceptional photographic material at every turn. Magellanic penguins colonize the shoreline in remarkable numbers, often surprisingly tolerant of a close approach. The Patagonian steppe and coastal scrub support an impressive diversity of birdlife including peregrine falcons, burrowing owls, variable hawks, elegant-crested tinamous, and a wealth of endemic songbirds. Mammals are a constant presence too: silver-grey foxes, long-legged maras, and the big hairy armadillo frequently appear around the property and surrounding landscape.

Our base for the week offers something genuinely rare, the chance to sleep inside the ecosystem itself, only moments from the hunting grounds and fully immersed in the the place. The estancia is comfortable and authentic, with warm hospitality and the kind of unhurried evening asados that feel as native to this landscape as the wind itself. With limited rooms on the property, the experience remains intimate and personal, far removed from the noise and compromise of mass tourism.

Because of the remoteness of the region, much of the estancia staff speaks little or no English. To ensure a seamless experience, we work alongside a trusted local Patagonia partner who assists with logistics, coordination, and on-the-ground support throughout the expedition.

This photo workshop is built for the patient and passionate, photographers who understand that the finest wildlife images are earned through real time in the field. Nature makes no promises here. But few places on Earth combine such extreme predatory behavior, such photographic richness, and such exclusive access into a single unforgettable experience. If this kind of thing stirs something in you, there are very few seats available, and they tend to disappear quickly.

 Trip Itinerary

Most meals included – (B,L,D) denotes Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 1 — Arrival in Buenos Aires & Flight to Patagonia (D)

Guests arrive in Buenos Aires before connecting on a domestic flight to Trelew (REL), the gateway to the Valdés Peninsula. We recommend arriving into Buenos Aires the night prior and taking the suggested afternoon domestic flight from Aeroparque Jorge Newbery Airport (AEP), which typically departs around 1:00–1:30 PM and arrives into Trelew between approximately 3:30–4:00 PM.

Upon arrival in Patagonia, our team will meet the group at the Trelew airport before we transfer a short distance to our hotel for introductions, orientation, and a welcome dinner. Depending on arrival timing and conditions, there may also be opportunities for sunset photography, seabirds, or coastal wildlife nearby.

Day 2 — Into Orca Territory (B,L,D)

After breakfast, we journey into the remote landscapes of the Valdés Peninsula and arrive the estancia, our home for the remainder of the expedition. After settling in, we begin our first field session exploring the beaches, sea lion colonies, and coastal lookouts surrounding the estancia. The anticipation builds as we position ourselves in the heart of one of the world’s most extraordinary wildlife arenas.

Day 3 — Punta Norte & The Hunt Begins (B,L,D)

Our days begin before sunrise as we head into the field to monitor tides, sea lion colonies, and the beaches where the orca patrol. Throughout the day we rotate between strategic observation points including the Faro lighthouse and remote pebble beaches, always prepared for the sudden arrival of hunting orca. During quieter moments we photograph sea lions, dramatic coastal light, birdlife, and the expansive Patagonian landscape.

Day 4 — Patagonia’s Wild Coast (B,L,D)

Today we continue exploring the legendary coastline of Punta Norte. Orca activity dictates our movements, with field teams constantly adapting to tides, weather, and changing conditions. The region offers incredible opportunities beyond the orca as well, with chances to photograph Magellanic penguins, peregrine falcons, owls, foxes, armadillos, and a variety of Patagonian birds throughout the estancia and surrounding coastline.

Day 5 — Full Field Day Along the Valdés Peninsula (B,L,D)

Another full day is dedicated to maximizing our opportunities with the intentional-stranding orca. Patience and persistence are key elements of the experience, and every changing tide carries new possibilities. We remain flexible and mobile throughout the day, balancing time between elevated lookout points and carefully positioned beach sessions near the sea lion colonies.

Day 6 — Orcas, Penguins & Patagonian Wildlife (B,L,D)

As our understanding of the local conditions deepens, we continue refining our daily strategy based on weather, tides, and recent orca movement. Beyond the famous hunting behavior, this is also an exceptional day for broader wildlife photography and storytelling imagery, from intimate penguin portraits to dramatic coastal scenes and atmospheric Patagonia light.

Day 7 — Waiting for the Wild (B,L,D)

Few wildlife experiences reward patience like the Valdés Peninsula. Today we once again immerse ourselves in the rhythm of the coastline, scanning the surf for dorsal fins while sea lions gather along the beaches below. Whether witnessing explosive predator-prey encounters or quieter moments in the field, every day here feels deeply connected to the raw pulse of nature.

Day 8 — Final Full Day in Orca Territory (B,L,D)

Our final full field day offers one last opportunity to photograph the remarkable wildlife of Punta Norte. We continue positioning ourselves strategically along the coastline while soaking in the extraordinary atmosphere of this remote and legendary ecosystem. In the evening, we gather back at the estancia to celebrate an unforgettable week in Patagonia.

Day 9 — Return to Trelew & Departure (B)

This morning we enjoy one final field session with the orca before departing the estancia and beginning our return journey toward Trelew. We intentionally structure the schedule to maximize one last opportunity along the coastline before onward travel.

Most guests will plan to depart on the typical afternoon flight from Trelew back to Buenos Aires, which generally departs around 4:45 PM. Later evening departures may also work depending on airline schedules. Additional overnight accommodations in Trelew or Buenos Aires can also be arranged independently if desired.

Please note that the exact sequence of the itineraries on all photography trips will be based on weather and lighting conditions. The goal on these trips is to make sure we are at the right place at the right time for the perfect light on our subjects. Also, itineraries can change for a variety of other circumstances including floods, forest fires, national park closures, road closures, and more. Due to the nature of wildlife and landscape photography, we do not guarantee any specific sightings or specific compositions.
