Special BCJ Trip: Birds & Wildlife of the Everglades

Published November 20, 2020
South Florida’s Everglades region is among the finest birding destinations in the world. There, we said it. A bold declaration, for sure, but the proof is in the proverbial “pudding.” If you want to see and photograph a truly arresting assemblage of birds, South Florida needs to be on your shortlist.

The Everglades consists of over 1.5 million acres of wetlands and is the largest subtropical wilderness area in the United States. It is home to over 360 species of birds, many of which are permanent residents, while some visit only in winter (much like the human population here). Everglades National Park protects an unparalleled landscape that provides important habitat for numerous rare and endangered species like the manatee, American crocodile, and the elusive Florida panther. The park is a World Heritage Site, International Biosphere Reserve, as well as a Wetland of International Importance.

This incredible collection of birds, and other critters, makes the Everglades a premier destination for wildlife photographers, like us!
Backcountry Journeys is happy to introduce itself to the ‘Sunshine State’ with Birds & Wildlife of the Everglades, our latest wildlife-based photo tour itinerary. Buckle up for a seemingly never-ending array of birds and toothy critters while on this six-day tour as we take to the Everglade swamps on three separate privately chartered boat excursions, in addition to a variety of carefully selected land-based walks and stopping points that will have you right in front of all the action!
While on land, we will visit some of the most iconic birding spots anywhere including – Everglades National Park and Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge. Ding Darling consists of over 6,400 acres of mangrove forest, submerged seagrass beds, cordgrass marshes, and West Indian hardwood hammocks, all idyllic habitat.

Interested, but want to know more? Join us Thursday, Nov 12th, at 11 am (Mountain) for a free webinar in which Russell Graves and I will discuss all of the important details of this outstanding trip itinerary, as well as answer questions you may have.

Click here to register for the webinar. If you are unable to join us live, register anyway and you’ll receive a recording of the webinar to watch at your convenience.
