(Re)Discover Home: Our National Parks
by Kenton Krueger
Way back in our nation’s history, tourists looked across the ocean to far-off places in Europe for their vacations.

Back then, the railroads came together to create advertising campaigns geared towards keeping those tourism dollars in-country, by introducing travelers to the natural wonders in their own backyard. These campaigns led to more and more travelers choosing to stay home; visiting places like Glacier, Rocky Mountain, Mt Rainier, and Grand Canyon National Parks.

Now, in 2021, as things with the COVID-19 pandemic continue to provide uncertainly in the travel world, many of us are looking for places to visit that are closer to home. There really is enough grandeur in our National Parks to offer up a lifetime worth of exploration and experiences.

While we are thrilled with our international trip offerings in places like Botswana, Brazil, and India, we certainly understand that for many these types of trips aren’t yet back in the cards, so-to-speak. And that’s OK!

There is so much available to us right here in our own backyard. As such, we’ve decided it’d be fun to highlight five of our favorite domestic BCJ Photo Trips for you to consider in 2021

Glacier National Park
Glacier National Park has long been considered to be among the most beautiful mountain regions of the world. The ‘Crown of the Continent’ is situated along the Canadian Border, nestled within the Lewis & Livingston Ranges of Montana’s Rocky Mountains. Jagged peaks rise to dizzying elevations and then drop into lush, glacially carved lakes and valleys. The park is a photographer’s playground with two unique mountain rangers, over 130 lakes, and a plethora of unspoiled plant and animal species such as elk, bear, moose, mountain goat, Bighorn sheep, and more. [Page//…Learn More]

Yellowstone & Grand Teton National Parks
Yellowstone is, without doubt, one of the most diverse and unique natural habitats in the world and is the largest single intact ecosystem in the United States. Wildlife thrives across the vast woodlands, meadows, and mountain ranges of what is often hailed as the American Serengeti. Bison roam across Yellowstone as they once did across the entire continent of North America as do the world’s largest population of Elk. Wolves hunt and play beneath the towering hills of Lamar Valley and Grizzly Bears wander the forests and grasslands in search of forage. Sitting just south of Yellowstone is the jagged and often snowy mountain peaks of Grand Teton, which spring from out of the plains towards the heavens, inspiring a sense of wonder and creativity in those who stand in marvel before them. Join Backcountry Journeys’ in Yellowstone & Grand Teton in spring and autumn on both ‘hiker’ and ‘standard’ tours, or on our  ‘standard’ Yellowstone Wildlife Safari, or ‘standard’ Grand Teton tour. Winter in Yellowstone is a ‘standard’ tour, as well. [Page//…Learn More]

Yosemite National Park
Buried deep in the western Sierra Nevada Mountains of California lies a place that resembles most people’s idea of heaven. Here towering granite mountains stand like great castle walls, home to plentiful waterfalls that cascade into deep valleys and meadows below. Being synonymous with John Muir and Ansel Adams, Yosemite National Park has grown in popularity as its dazzling views and aesthetics now draw roughly four million visitors annually; with the majority spending their time in the world-famous Yosemite Valley. Visit Yosemite with Backcountry Journeys in Spring, Autumn, and Winter and choose from ‘hiker’ or ‘standard’ versions in spring and autumn. [Page//…Learn More]

Grand Canyon National Park
There is no other place like the Grand Canyon. The feelings from seeing and immersing oneself in this place are also unlike any other. In fact, it is difficult for the brain to fully understand what is laid out in front of it. This great chasm offers a literal glimpse into a time never known by man. Seeing the Canyon can be overwhelming, bringing tears and goosebumps. Experience the Grand Canyon with Backcountry Journeys in summer during its most ‘electric’ season, or in Fall when the Canyon’s North Rim is draped in autumn color. Both trips are ‘standard’ itineraries. [Page//…Learn More]

Great Smoky Mountains National Park
For photographers, Great Smoky Mountains National Park offers an array of opportunities. Abundant wildlife, like Black bears, elk, and an amazing amount of birds and amphibians are here for the taking. However, taking center stage here are the views and vistas, the trees, and the cultural history. Explore and photography our nation’s most visited National Park with Backcountry Journeys in spring for re-birth and wildflowers, or in autumn for the changing colors of the trees and waterfalls. Choose from ‘hiker’ or ‘standard’ versions of each itinerary. [Page//…Learn More]

Take a look at our list above. Is there a national park location you’ve not yet visited, yet feel drawn to? Or, perhaps look to a place you’ve been prior, yet want to experience again, this time behind the lens of your camera. These five parks highlighted above are just a sampling of what Backcountry Journeys has to offer. Click here to see our full list (including international) of destinations. We’d encourage you to really think about which spot speaks to you. And, whichever you choose, (re)discover home with Backcountry Journeys!
