Larry is an outdoor travel career professional. Beginning with a formal education at the National Outdoor Leadership School, he spent 8 years leading backcountry trips followed by another 10 years in program administration before joining us at Backcountry Journeys.
As a field guide, he led conservation projects, worked for a wilderness therapy program, and was a backpacking guide in the Grand Canyon region. When his body needed a break from carrying heavy backpacks, he accepted a support position with a small hiking company that eventually grew into an international success. Along that journey Larry worked his way to the top of US operations, building and improving the program as it grew. It was through this process from field staff to management that he resolved always to work in tourism, because solving complex problems to enrich the lives of others is a great satisfaction.
Above all else, Larry is committed to a lifetime of learning. Growing up in rural Pennsylvania, he followed his heart westward after earning a degree in fine arts. He moved with his work and eventually settled in Flagstaff, AZ where he married and welcomed his daughter into the world. His early interest in the arts, combined with his career knowledge of outdoor travel, led him to Backcountry Journeys where the two worlds come together. Now residing in Minneapolis, he looks forward to backpacking trips in the north country and canoeing in the Boundary Waters.
