Rob James grew up in Mississippi where he spent most of his weekends playing outside and hunting or fishing with his Dad and brothers. They spent their summers camping in the South around the Ozarks and the Smoky Mountains, but it was on their first family camping trip to Yellowstone National Park that Rob felt the true calling of the West.
After graduating with a B.S. in Education from Mississippi State University, he followed that call to Flagstaff, AZ where he began a 15 year career as a backcountry guide. He has led clients on over 500 trips throughout the Grand Canyon, the Canyons of Utah, the Grand Tetons, and Yellowstone National Parks. After "hanging up his boots" he worked as the Operations Manager of a guiding company in the Greater Yellowstone Area before finding his way to Backcountry Journeys. In addition to his work in these areas, he has also hiked and explored around the islands of Hawaii, Alaska, the Canadian Rockies, Southeast Asia, and the Himalayas. He is an avid skier, snowboarder, and climber.
Rob now resides in Toronto with his wife, 3 children, and their dog Glacier. When he is not working, he can be found planning his next camping or hiking trip or spending time with his family.
