Join us today as we dive into the joys, challenges, excitement, and rewards of photographing the iconic marine wildlife of Alaska. Let’s get right into it and take a look at why this corner of our planet is such an incredible destination for nature photography!
Alaska's marine ecosystems are teeming with life in many different forms, providing photographers with endless opportunities to witness nature's wonders up close. From pristine coastlines bustling with wildlife activity to walls of ice that form the edge of massive glaciers to towering peaks covered in dense evergreen forests and topped with a cap of snow, Alaska is truly unlike anywhere else on earth. This northernmost state is one of the wildest places on the entire planet and should be on the shortlist of any nature photographer!
Alaska is home to a diverse array of marine wildlife, each more captivating than the last. Imagine standing on the deck of a boat as a pod of orcas gracefully glides through the frigid waters, their sleek black dorsal fins slicing through the surface with effortless grace. Or perhaps you prefer the heart-pounding thrill of capturing the breach of a humpback whale, its massive body soaring out of the water in a display of power and beauty. And if that isn’t enough, you’re likely to see sea otters, seals, sea lions, puffins, and countless other wildlife species as you venture along rugged coastlines. In Alaska, these encounters are not just possible – they're practically guaranteed.
In addition to its remarkable wildlife, the Alaskan coast offers some of the most breathtaking landscapes on Earth. Whether you’re looking for a pristine backdrop for a wildlife shot or want to highlight the landscape itself there is ample opportunity around every peninsula and inlet. Towering glaciers calve into icy fjords, while rugged coastlines are punctuated by rocky sea stacks and windswept beaches. From the vibrant hues of a sunset to the ethereal beauty of the Northern Lights dancing across the night sky, Alaska's landscapes provide the perfect backdrop for any photography expedition.
One of the greatest joys of photographing marine wildlife in Alaska is the sense of discovery that comes with exploring its remote and untouched wilderness. Whether you're navigating the labyrinthine channels of the Inside Passage or exploring secret inlets and fjords, every moment is filled with the thrill of the unknown. And with each click of the shutter, you'll capture not just an image, but a memory – a snapshot of a fleeting moment in time that will stay with you forever.
As photographers, it's important to remember the impact that our presence can have on the fragile ecosystems we so dearly cherish. In Alaska, where the effects of climate change are already being keenly felt, responsible wildlife photography is more important than ever. By observing animals from a safe and respectful distance, minimizing our footprint, and supporting local conservation efforts, we can ensure that future generations will have the same opportunity to experience the magic of Alaska's marine wildlife.
And by capturing meaningful images of this delicate and incredible place we can share its magic with the world. Images of places like this not only inspire others to get out and explore the world but they can also aid in the protection of wild places for generations to come!
At Backcountry Journeys we’ve been traveling to the coastal regions of Alaska for years and they’re some of our favorite photography destinations. Heck, the founders of BCJ Russ and Crystal live here for a reason. If you’d like to experience the magic of one of the earth’s most wild places for yourself then join us on our incredible Marine Wildlife of Alaskaphotography workshop!
