The entire team here at Backcountry Journeys is thrilled to announce one of our most ambitious—and most exciting—workshops to date. We're pleased to introduce the Australia Wildlife Photo Safari: Tasmania, Kangaroo Island & Gippsland.
This brand-new 16-day adventure brings together three of the most biologically rich and photographically diverse regions in Australia into one seamless itinerary—designed exclusively for photographers who want more than the typical Australia tour. More wildlife. More ecosystems. More variety. More once-in-a-lifetime moments.
From mossy Tasmanian rainforests to rugged coastal cliffs, from wombats grazing beneath Cradle Mountain to sea lions yawning in the morning glow at Seal Bay, this is a workshop built to deliver extraordinary images—and the kind of Australia experience that travelers rarely get to see.
And now, it’s officially open for booking.
Most Australia itineraries focus on a single region. Ours doesn’t. Instead, we’ve combined three wildly different ecosystems—each handpicked for its photographic potential—into a single journey guided by BCJ pros and expert local naturalists.
This means you’ll photograph:
Calm lakes and eucalyptus forests in Gippsland
Moss-draped rainforest, waterfalls, and nocturnal wildlife in Tasmania
Towering cliffs, turquoise bays, and iconic species on Kangaroo Island
The result is a workshop with unparalleled depth, diversity, and visual storytelling opportunities. It’s the Australia photographers dream about—but few ever get to experience.
Our adventure begins in the underrated (and wonderfully wild) Gippsland region, where dawn light glows through paperbark forests and wallabies graze along lake edges.
Here, photographers can expect:
Wallabies, kangaroos & forest birds
Platypus in quiet streams
Lyrebirds and parrots in eucalyptus groves
Soft reflections on the region’s vast lake systems
It’s a gentle and diverse introduction—a perfect warm-up before we head south into Tasmania’s dramatic cool-climate landscapes.
Once we land in Hobart, the tone shifts—dramatically. Tasmania feels like a different planet: cooler light, deeper forests, denser textures, and creatures found nowhere else on Earth.
In Mt Field National Park, we’ll photograph:
Waterfalls framed by vibrant green moss
Fern gullies washed in filtered light
Wombats, echidnas, and platypus in pristine habitat
From there, the Tasmanian Highlands deliver a spacious, tundra-like wilderness with opportunities to capture:
Tasmanian devils & quolls
Wombats grazing in open alpine light
Wide, moody highland vistas
Night skies perfect for astrophotography
Then comes one of Australia’s crown jewels: Cradle Mountain.
Think:
Wombats at dawn
Alpine lakes glowing with sunrise color
Echidnas and grassland wallabies
Shifting weather that transforms the landscape by the minute
With a visit to Devils@Cradle, you’ll also photograph Tasmanian devils at close range—a rare and unforgettable opportunity.
Few places in Australia offer wildlife density like Kangaroo Island, and we finish our journey here for a reason—it’s a showstopper.
Highlights include:
Private Dawn Access at Seal Bay
Photograph endangered Australian sea lions with an entire beach to yourself—long before the public arrives.
Rugged Coastlines & Iconic Landforms
Remarkable Rocks
Admirals Arch
Turquoise bays and sculpted cliffs
Coastal raptors riding the wind
