New Trip Announcement: Coastal Predators: Wolves, Bears & Marine Wildlife of British Columbia

Published May 8, 2026

There are still places in this world that feel truly wild. Places where the landscape operates entirely on its own terms. Where ancient rainforest collides with the Pacific Ocean, wolves swim between islands, humpback whales feed beneath towering mountains, and every tide seems to reveal another layer of life.

The Great Bear Rainforest is one of those places.

And we are incredibly excited to announce a brand-new Backcountry Journeys photography workshop designed to explore it in depth: Coastal Predators: Wolves, Bears & Marine Wildlife of British Columbia.

This is not just another wildlife trip. It is an immersive expedition into one of the most biologically rich and visually spectacular ecosystems on Earth. Based out of an exceptional all-inclusive lodge tucked deep within British Columbia’s remote central coast, this workshop offers rare access to a roadless wilderness that very few photographers will ever experience at this level.

From coastal wolves and grizzly bears to humpback whales, orcas, sea otters, and endless layers of mist-covered rainforest, this journey is built for photographers who want something far beyond the ordinary.

A Place That Feels Almost Untouched

The Great Bear Rainforest stretches across more than 400 kilometers of British Columbia’s rugged coastline and remains one of the largest intact temperate rainforests left on the planet. Ancient Sitka spruce and red cedar forests rise straight from the ocean. Salmon rivers carve through moss-covered valleys. Fog drifts through steep fjords while bald eagles circle overhead almost constantly.

It is an ecosystem that feels alive in every direction.

What makes this region so special photographically is the sheer density and diversity of wildlife that exists here in a relatively concentrated area. In a single day, it is entirely possible to photograph wolves along a tidal flat at sunrise, humpback whales feeding offshore by midday, and grizzly bears roaming the shoreline in beautiful evening light.

Very few places anywhere in the world offer that kind of opportunity.

Even fewer offer it in landscapes this dramatic.

The Coastal Wolves of British Columbia

At the heart of this trip is one of North America’s most elusive and fascinating predators: the coastal wolf.

These wolves are profoundly different from the wolves most people imagine. Living along the edge of the Pacific Ocean, coastal wolves have evolved in direct relationship with the sea. Researchers have found that much of their diet comes from marine sources including salmon, shellfish, and even marine mammals. They regularly swim between islands, hunt tidal zones, and navigate this rainforest-and-ocean environment with incredible adaptability.

Photographing them is one of the most compelling wildlife experiences anywhere in North America.

Watching a wolf emerge silently from the rainforest onto a rocky shoreline while ocean mist hangs in the background is the kind of moment that stays with you forever.

But these wolves are notoriously difficult to find.

They are not roadside animals. They are not habituated to human presence. Encounters require deep local knowledge, understanding of tides and pack movement, patience, and time spent immersed in the landscape.

That is exactly what makes this workshop so special.

A Unique Opportunity Built Through Conservation Partnerships

Over the past year, our lodge partners and local experts have worked to build a long-term wolf monitoring initiative in this region. Active efforts are underway to track pack territories, identify denning areas, and better understand movement patterns throughout the ecosystem.

By the time our 2027 and 2028 departures operate, this initiative will provide an extraordinary foundation for locating and ethically photographing these animals in truly wild conditions.

This is not about guaranteed sightings or rushed encounters. It is about thoughtful access, patient fieldcraft, and maximizing the likelihood of meaningful photographic opportunities while respecting the animals and the ecosystem they inhabit.

For serious wildlife photographers, that distinction matters.

Why Early Summer Is So Important

Timing is everything when photographing wildlife, and early summer offers one of the best windows imaginable for coastal wolves.

June coincides with denning season and the emergence of wolf pups. During this period, packs tend to remain anchored closer to den sites, creating more predictable movement patterns and opportunities for sustained observation.

The social dynamics during this time are extraordinary. Adults returning with food. Pups interacting near den entrances. Pack behavior unfolding naturally against the backdrop of ancient rainforest and coastal shoreline.

These are the kinds of moments wildlife photographers dream about.

At the same time, the broader ecosystem is exploding with activity. Humpback whales feed aggressively in nutrient-rich channels. Orcas patrol the coastline. Sea otters drift through kelp beds. Shorebirds fill tidal flats, and bears remain highly active along the shoreline and salmon streams.

The light during June in coastal British Columbia is equally remarkable. Long golden hours, atmospheric fog, low clouds, soft directional light, and constantly changing weather create endless opportunities for dramatic and moody imagery.

This is coastal photography at its absolute best.

Exploring by Boat

Much of this workshop is conducted by boat, allowing us to move quietly and efficiently through this vast wilderness without the limitations of roads or fixed viewpoints.
This flexibility is a huge part of what makes the experience so unique.

We can position ourselves for changing weather, shifting wildlife behavior, and the best available light throughout the day. Some mornings may begin before sunrise as we head into calm coastal channels searching for wolves or marine mammals. Other evenings may end with grizzlies feeding along the shoreline beneath glowing skies.

And in between, there is the simple experience of being immersed in one of the most spectacular coastal environments anywhere on Earth.

More Than Just Wolves

While coastal wolves are the centerpiece of this workshop, the overall diversity of photographic opportunities here is staggering.

The Great Bear Rainforest is one of the few places on the planet where photographers can realistically build a world-class wildlife portfolio across multiple apex predator species and marine ecosystems all within a single trip.

Grizzly bears. Black bears. Humpback whales. Orcas. Sea otters. Harbor seals. Bald eagles. Endless seabirds and coastal landscapes.

Every day offers something different.

That variety is one of the reasons this workshop has us so excited.

A Rare Kind of Experience

Modern wildlife photography can sometimes feel crowded and predictable. Popular destinations become busier every year, and genuinely wild experiences become harder and harder to find.

This is different.

This is remote. Exclusive. Intimate. Wild in the truest sense of the word.

The Great Bear Rainforest remains one of the last places in North America where ecosystems still feel fully intact and where large predators continue to move through the landscape largely unseen.

To experience it with this level of access is extraordinarily rare.

And for photographers who care deeply about wild places, meaningful encounters, and creating images that rise above the ordinary, this workshop represents something truly special.

We honestly could not be more excited to share it with you.
