We’re excited to announce the return of Ice Bubbles of Abraham Lake, one of Backcountry Journeys’ most distinctive winter photography workshops, with renewed departure dates for the upcoming season.

We've photographed Abraham Lake before, and we're bringing this favorite back because it's simply too good to leave behind.

Every winter, the lake becomes a temporary gallery of natural patterns, textures, cracks, and translucent formations. Beneath the surface, methane bubbles become trapped in successive layers of crystal-clear ice, creating an otherworldly scene that changes from year to year, and even from one day to the next.

For photographers, that unpredictability is a massive part of the appeal.

A Winter Photography Experience Unlike Any Other

The Canadian Rockies are already spectacular. In winter, they become something entirely different.

Fresh snow simplifies the landscape. Low winter light creates long shadows and warm alpenglow. Frozen waterfalls and shorelines introduce new textures, while towering mountain peaks provide dramatic scale that perfectly frames out landscape or winter wildlife images.

And then there are the bubbles.

Abraham Lake's famous ice bubbles form when methane released from organic matter beneath the lake becomes trapped as the surface freezes. The result is a collection of delicate white formations suspended beneath the ice.
No two winters produce the same patterns.

That means every return offers something new to photograph.

For photographers, the lake becomes an incredible opportunity to slow down and look closely; to find repetition, abstract shapes, layers, texture, and unexpected compositions within the ice.

Fresh snow, cloud cover, clear skies, sunrise, sunset, and shifting light all create different opportunities. That's why our daily itinerary remains flexible. Rather than forcing a rigid schedule, we can respond to the conditions and spend our time where the photography is strongest.

And Abraham Lake Is Just the Beginning

While the ice bubbles are the star of this workshop, they aren't the only reason to make the journey.

We'll also explore the legendary Icefields Parkway, one of the world's most scenic mountain roads. The route through the Canadian Rockies provides opportunities to photograph towering peaks, glaciers, frozen waterfalls, snow-covered forests, frozen shorelines, and expansive alpine landscapes.
Winter gives the landscape a quieter, more minimalist character.

Instead of rushing from one location to another, we'll have the opportunity to work the landscape in the best available light and weather. Sunrise and sunset sessions allow us to take advantage of the warm tones of alpenglow and the dramatic side light created by the low winter sun.

It's the kind of environment that can provide photography inspiration long after you've returned home.

Photography Tips That Go Beyond the Shot

One of the advantages of photographing with an experienced instructor is having someone there to help you see possibilities you might otherwise overlook.

Maybe there's a stronger composition a few steps away. Or the scene calls for a longer focal length rather than the obvious wide-angle approach. It could be that best photograph isn't the sweeping landscape, but the small pattern hiding in the ice.

Those moments are where photography tips become more than technical advice. They're opportunities to develop your own way of seeing.

Throughout the workshop, you'll have personalized instruction and plenty of time to experiment, whether you're an experienced landscape photographer or simply looking for a new way to challenge yourself creatively!

A Small-Group Winter Adventure

The Ice Bubbles of Abraham Lake workshop is designed for photographers who want to spend more time making photographs and less time managing the logistics of a winter adventure.

The five-day, four-night workshop begins and ends in Calgary and is limited to seven guests.

Lodging, transportation during the workshop, listed meals, permits, and professional photography instruction are included.
And because the group is intentionally small, there's room for personalized instruction and flexibility in the field.

We'll follow the light. We'll watch the weather. We'll respond to changing ice conditions.

Most importantly, we'll give ourselves the time to make photographs rather than simply check locations off a list!

The Bubbles Won't Ever Look the Same Twice

That's perhaps the best reason to return.

Abraham Lake changes every winter. New ice forms. Old ice shifts. Snow changes the landscape. Weather reshapes the light. Patterns emerge and disappear.
