The Top 4 Destinations to Photograph the Northern Lights

Published August 14, 2023
Have you ever witnessed an event, some sort of natural phenomenon, that fundamentally changed your view of the world? Something so strange, unique, or special that it made you take a step back and think about the bigger picture.

Every now and then seemingly impossible and extraordinary events like this happen, and for those of us lucky enough to witness them we are left in a sense of awe and with a slightly different perspective.

Perhaps this is witnessing a tidal wave being formed by massive calving from a glacier being pushed into the sea. Or maybe it’s being in just the right place at the right time to see a volcano erupt into the heavens spewing liquid magma, debris, and smoke upwards from the depths of the earth.

Whatever the event or occurrence may be, there are marvelous things happening all over our planet that a large majority of people will never witness throughout their entire lives. Only a fortunate few with the means necessary, a spirit of adventure, and a bit of luck can witness such things.

In today’s article, we’re going to focus specifically on one of nature’s most alluring, beautiful, and outright incredible natural wonders and even more specifically the best places on earth to witness and photograph it for yourself. Today we’re going to take a look at the top 4 destinations throughout the world to observe the Aurora Borealis or northern lights, exploring the unique qualities and photographic opportunities each location offers.

Let’s get into it!

Capturing the Enigmatic Dance of Light

The Aurora Borealis, a breathtaking natural phenomenon often referred to as the Northern Lights, is a celestial ballet of light and color that graces the night skies of select locations near the polar regions. This mesmerizing spectacle, caused by the interaction between charged particles from the sun and Earth's atmosphere, has fascinated and enchanted generations of observers.

Beyond their ethereal beauty, the Northern Lights offer an unparalleled opportunity for photographers to capture a truly magical and otherworldly experience. With long-exposure images, you can surpass the capabilities of your own eyes and reveal these immense columns of light as they dance through the night sky forever preserving memories with stunning images.

No Time Like the Present

As it turns out, the timing of a Northern Lights photography expedition can significantly impact the quality of your experience. This is because the sun operates on a roughly 11-year solar cycle, and during periods of heightened solar activity, the chances of witnessing vivid and dynamic auroras increase.

These cycles, known as solar maximums, create ideal conditions for capturing stunning Northern Lights photographs. And, as luck would have it, we are in the midst of a solar maximum right now, making this an exceptional time to embark on a journey to witness and photograph the Aurora Borealis in all its glory.

If you’d like to learn more about why now is an exceptional time to photograph the northern lights be sure to check out this article explaining the solar cycles and science behind this phenomena in detail!

The Best Locations to Photograph the Northern Lights

So, we’ve established just how incredible and magical the northern lights are and that they’re exceptionally strong and occurring at a higher frequency right now. Which begs the question: Where are the best locations to actually see and photograph them?
Fairbanks Alaska: The Land of Untamed Wilderness

Alaska, particularly the city of Fairbanks, is renowned for its vast wilderness and clear night skies, providing an ideal setting for Northern Lights photography. Its high latitude and minimal light pollution enhance the visibility and vibrancy of the auroras. The Fairbanks region also benefits from its location within the "Aurora Oval," an area of increased auroral activity.

The charming blend of snowy landscapes, frozen rivers, and rustic cabins creates an enchanting foreground for your Northern Lights compositions. Additionally, the option to include elements like dog sleds or hot springs further adds to the allure of Fairbanks as a photography destination.

At Backcountry Journeys we offer several northern lights photography workshops in Fairbanks and I’ve been consistently impressed with the images sent back from these trips. With so many great locations to visit just outside the city, warming huts, and picturesque winter landscapes you really can’t go wrong!

The Lofoten Islands: A Norwegian Arctic Gem

Situated within the Arctic Circle, the Lofoten Islands in Norway offer a dramatic coastal backdrop for capturing the Northern Lights. These islands are renowned for their rugged mountains, picturesque fishing villages, and pristine fjords. Photographers can juxtapose the brilliance of the auroras against traditional red fishing cabins, icy waters, and snow-capped peaks, creating images that tell a story of nature's grandeur and human resilience. The Lofoten Islands' unique blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage makes it an extraordinary place to immerse oneself in Northern Lights photography.

We recently launched a brand-new Photography trip to the Lofoten Islands focusing on capturing the many iconic and stunning landscapes and seascapes spread throughout this Norwegian archipelago with some great marine wildlife opportunities as well. And there’s a good chance you’ll be able to see some light shows in the skies!

Iceland: Where Fire and Ice Converge

Iceland's diverse landscapes, ranging from glaciers to geysers, provide a dynamic stage for Northern Lights photography. The island's position on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge places it at the crossroads of shifting tectonic plates, adding a geological dimension to your photographs. Iconic locations like the Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon and the Snæfellsnes Peninsula offer captivating foregrounds for aurora-lit skies. The stark contrast between the Northern Lights' ephemeral dance and Iceland's stark geological features creates a sense of otherworldly magic that photographers strive to capture.

At Backcountry Journeys, this is one of our absolute favorite places to visit and we offer a variety of photography trips in Iceland throughout the year. Not only will you witness breathtaking landscapes and seascapes riddled with volcanic stone and ice but there’s a good chance you’ll be able to photograph the aurora when night falls.

Scotland: Mystical Auroras Amidst Historic Landscapes

Scotland, often associated with ancient castles and rolling hills, presents a unique opportunity for Northern Lights photography. Locations such as the Isle of Skye and the Scottish Highlands offer a blend of historical charm and rugged landscapes. Photographers can frame the auroras against medieval castles or serene lochs, infusing their images with a sense of timelessness and mystique. While Scotland may not be as consistently aurora-rich as some Arctic regions, the potential for capturing the Northern Lights amidst historic and picturesque scenes is unmatched.

We don’t currently run any trips here but stay tuned as we’re looking to launch our first Scotland trip within the next year!

Conclusion: The Enchanting Dance of Light

Photographing the Northern Lights is a truly magical experience, and I honestly can’t compare it to anything else on Earth.

These four premiere destinations, each with its own unique characteristics, offer photographers an unparalleled opportunity to capture the ethereal dance of light and color that is the Aurora Borealis. From the untamed wilderness of Alaska to the dramatic coastlines of the Lofoten Islands, from the geological wonders of Iceland to the historic landscapes of Scotland, each location presents its own narrative for the Northern Lights to illuminate.

As we gaze upward to witness this cosmic performance, let us remember that beyond the technical aspects of photography, it is the awe-inspiring beauty of the Northern Lights that truly makes the experience magical and unforgettable. Where will your next northern lights adventure take you?
