 Trip Itinerary

Most meals included – (B,L,D) denotes Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 1 (D)

Arrive in Leknes, Norway. We recommend the flight at 8:35 am out of Oslo that lands at 11:25 am in Leknes . You'll be picked up from the airport, or the nearby hotel if you arrived early. We will do an orientation and check in to our cabins. We'll shoot sunset along the way if the light is good. Afterwards, we'll enjoy dinner as a group and monitor the aurora forecast, if it looks good, we'll head out for our first night session. We recommend buying lunch in Oslo or Bodo before arriving to Leknes.

Note: It may work best to overnight in Oslo at the airport hotel or arrive to Leknes the day before the trip, depending on your flight schedules from the US. This is not included, but we know this travel route well and can help you with your travel planning.

Day 2 - 4 (B,L*,D)

Over the next few days, we'll focus on the landscapes surrounding the quaint fishing village of Reine, with the iconic peak of Olstind Island towering over the fjord. We'll explore the beaches of Flakstadøya Island, including Skagsanden, Myrland, and Storsandnes, where you'll have countless opportunities to capture seascapes and dramatic coastal landscapes. As the night falls each night, we'll keep watch for the awe-inspiring Northern Lights. This area is packed with epic locations, all within short travel distances of our cabins.

Days 5 - 7 (B,L*,D)

On these days, we'll focus on the Leknes area on Vestvågøy. Locations will include the beautiful beaches of Uttakleiv, Haukland, and Vik. With a bit of luck, these stunning coastal areas will be blanketed in a fresh layer of snow, creating a magical winter wonderland. We'll take short walks to reach lesser-known viewpoints and explore the hidden corners of the island, uncovering new angles and perspectives that will bring your photographs to life. Every night, we'll be on the watch for aurora.

Day 8 (B)

We'll shoot a final sunrise in the fjords and have a group breakfast before traveling back to Leknes Airport to conclude the trip.

*Days are very short in winter and we will spend almost all daylight hours out shooting locations. Sometimes lunch will consist of snacks/sandwiches packed from breakfast, other times a cafe visit, and there may be 1-2 days where we do a grocery store stop. Lofoten is very remote and dining options in winter are few and far between.

Please note that the exact sequence of the itineraries on all photography trips will be based on weather and lighting conditions. The goal on these trips is to make sure we are at the right place at the right time for the perfect light on our subjects. Also, itineraries can change for a variety of other circumstances including floods, forest fires, national park closures, road closures, and more. Due to the nature of wildlife and landscape photography, we do not guarantee any specific sightings or specific compositions.

Testimonials From Our Customers
Julie K.
"I have traveled with Backcountry Journeys (BCJ) several times over the last 4 years to Glacier NP, Costa Rica (2x), Smoky Mountains NP, Joshua Tree, Zion and Bryce NPs, and most recently to Alaska.

Every trip with BCJ has been an outstanding experience. The guides are professional photographers who put the experience of the guests first. They are willing to provide as much hands on help as you need/want. The guides are also extremely knowledgeable and well trained in wilderness safety as well as the areas they guide.

BCJ trips are well run from the time of reservation through the entire trip. They will take you to great places and find great photographic opportunities."

"BCJ provides an outstanding experience for photographers of all levels of experience/expertise. Each day's excursion is well planned-out and the guides always have a back-up plan if the weather is less than cooperative.

I have now been on 5 trips and each one seems better than the last. I find the guides to be very helpful and personable. The guides provide the level of hands-on assistance each participant wants.

The accommodations are always good, taking into consideration what each particular destination has to offer. I plan to continue doing these trips with BCJ and can't recommend them highly enough."

"I have now been on 8 trips with Backcountry Journeys. I love traveling with this company, as I am a woman traveling alone, and all I have to do is show up and they take care of everything else.

They have wonderful, caring, helpful, FUN, and knowledgeable guides who make the days fly by. They get us to the best photography sites possible and are always willing to help with anything and answer all questions.

We stay in great places and there is always too much wonderful food! I have met other travelers on their trips who will be friends for life, plus the guides are more than guides--they become friends too. I know I will be doing more traveling with them in the future."
