Step into the heart of Camargue, France, for an immersive photo safari with Backcountry Journeys, where you’ll capture the region's unique wildlife and ancient landscapes. Camargue’s sprawling wetlands are famous for their roaming herds of white horses, vibrant pink salt flats, and diverse birdlife, making this eight-day trip a paradise for photographers seeking new perspectives.
Your adventure begins at Marseille Provence airport, where you’ll join your group before traveling to the coastal town of Les Saintes Maries de la Mer. This is a historic seaside town known for its iconic whitewashed buildings and narrow streets. After a delicious lunch, you’ll visit a bird park, where Greater Flamingos and other bird species roam freely against the backdrop of the expansive wetlands. Observing these flamingos in their natural habitat provides a chance to capture their delicate beauty, their vibrant feathers glowing under the evening light.
Throughout the week, you’ll have multiple sessions dedicated to photographing the famous white horses of Camargue, capturing their energy and grace as they gallop through shallow water. The Camargue horses are one of the oldest and most distinctive horse breeds in the world, believed to have lived in the Rhône Delta for thousands of years. These striking horses are renowned for their almost mythical presence, standing out with their snow-white coats and powerful, stocky builds. While they are born dark in color, their coats gradually lighten to a brilliant white as they mature, creating a stunning contrast against the marshy landscapes of Camargue, France. The Camargue horses are not just a symbol of the region but also a living connection to its ancient and rugged landscape.
As the trip unfolds, you’ll venture to the Roman bridge of Pont Du Gard, an engineering marvel that spans the Gardon River and has stood for over 2,000 years. You’ll also explore the walled medieval town of Aigues Mortes, where cobblestone streets, ancient fortifications, and local markets create an atmosphere that feels frozen in time. Later, you’ll visit Uzès, a town of narrow, winding streets and grand squares surrounded by beautiful limestone buildings, perfect for capturing the textures of southern France. Another highlight is Les Baux de Provence, a medieval village set high in the Alpilles mountains. Here, you’ll attend the "Les Carrières de Lumières" sound and light show, where moving art projections transform an old quarry into a living canvas—a rare chance to capture light, shadow, and color in a surreal setting.
Finally, you’ll visit the lively market of Arles, bustling with local vendors and vibrant displays of fresh produce, flowers, and handmade goods. Arles, with its Roman ruins and Provençal charm, offers a glimpse into the region’s timeless appeal. For a memorable finale, you’ll have the opportunity to photograph the black bulls of Camargue, watching as they roam the open fields—a fitting end to your exploration of the region’s wild spirit.
This journey blends the beauty of Camargue’s landscapes, historical towns, and cultural experiences into a rich photographic tapestry. With expert guidance, comfortable accommodations, and delicious local cuisine, you’ll return with a portfolio filled with stunning images and unforgettable memories of southern France’s most captivating region.
