Trip Report: Ultimate Texas Bird Photo Safari: Birds in Flight & Private Blinds - December 2025

Published June 25, 2026

There likely aren’t many days in your life when you don’t see at least one bird. They are constant companions in our daily routines; perched on fence posts, soaring overhead, or darting between trees. Yet rarely do we slow down enough to truly observe them; nonetheless photograph them. The Ultimate Texas Bird Photo Safari: Birds in Flight & Private Blinds, from Backcountry Journeys, was designed to do exactly that: to encourage intentional observation, patience, and appreciation for the artistry of birds in motion.

Over six days and five nights, our group experienced the incredible diversity of Texas birdlife, from calm coastal mornings filled with anticipation to heart-pounding action in private blinds where birds flock. This trip was designed to build confidence, sharpen skills, and deliver unforgettable encounters and it did exactly that.

Aransas National Wildlife Refuge

We began our journey at Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, one of the most important wintering grounds for birds in North America. The mornings here carried a calming anticipation; the kind of quiet thrill that comes from knowing something special could happen at any moment.

On our very first morning, we boarded a boat and set out onto Aransas Bay in search of one of the rarest birds on the continent: the Whooping Crane. With fewer than 800 individuals in existence, seeing one in the wild is a true lifer moment for many birders; and photographing them with incredible light is an even rarer privilege.

The closer we got to the cranes, the more we held our breath. As we slowly approached them alongside the shore, cameras came up, shutters clicked, and the realization set in that we were witnessing something extraordinary. For many in the group, this was a once-in-a-lifetime experience; one that alone made the trip unforgettable.

We spent the following sunrise and sunset sessions at the refuge. Spotting Roseate Spoonbills glowing pink in the soft coastal light, while Great Blue Herons, Tricolored Herons, Willets, American Avocets, and Egrets provided opportunities to refine technique and practice patience.

And in those nearly fleeting moments, capturing a flock flying across the pink and purple painted sky made all of the patience worth it.

Southern Texas Private Blinds

As we transitioned inland to Edinburg, Sam Trull and I guided the group into the world of private blinds, where the pace of the trip shifted dramatically.

The private blinds here are meticulously designed for photographers; each positioned with the perfect background distance and aligned for ideal light at specific times of day. The result? Clean compositions, creamy bokeh, and birds flying directly into frame.

It didn’t take long for the action to unfold, and when it did, Sam and I were ready to call it out so that our group would have the best chance to capture it. “Woodpecker on the left perch” “Harris’s Hawk flying in from the right.”

In moments of abrupt action, silence would break instantly into a flurry of shutters, followed by laughter and a chorus of “Did you guys get that?” Moments like these repeated themselves throughout the sessions; spontaneous, electric, and incredibly rewarding.

Songbirds and raptors moved through with purpose and confidence. Green Jays flashed vibrant color, Golden-fronted Woodpeckers worked the perches, and the variety kept everyone alert and ready. This was where preparation paid off and where the intimidation of birds-in-flight photography began to dissolve.

Confidence in Flight

One of the most powerful aspects of this trip was the growth we saw in every participant. The group was a mix of lifelong birders and photographers trying bird photography for the very first time. For many, the idea of capturing sharp birds in flight felt daunting at the start.

By the end of the trip, that hesitation was gone.

Through thoughtful guidance, repetition, and perfectly staged opportunities, guests began to understand what it really takes to make a successful flight image; anticipation, positioning, and trust in the process. Watching confidence build session after session was one of the most rewarding parts of guiding this experience.

For those who chose to participate, we offered a post-processing session during a break midday to share tips on how to enhance and sharpen images whether to share online amongst friends or get printed.

If there’s one takeaway everyone shared, it was this: bird photography can be challenging, but deeply rewarding; and this is the trip to learn and perfect it.

A Final Morning to Remember

On our final morning, just before heading back to Corpus Christi, we were greeted by three Harris’s Hawks in a fitting and powerful send-off. They perched together, surveyed the landscape, and reminded us once more why Texas is such a remarkable place for bird photography. Swooping in and out of the perches that sat in front of our blinds, our eyes locked on them in the distance in hopes to catch an incredible moment of them in flight.

From there, we returned for airport drop-offs but not before one last shared meal; trading stories and reliving favorite moments from a week that felt as endless and full as our memory cards. With more than 40 unique birds spotted and photographed, nearly everyone in our group walked away having added at least one new bird to their life lists and portfolio.

Why This Trip Works

This safari was built for photographers who want more than just sightings. It’s about understanding behavior, mastering birds in flight, and placing yourself in the best possible conditions to succeed.

Between the rarity of the Whooping Cranes, the calm beauty of the coast, and the exhilarating action of private blinds, this trip delivers on every level; especially for those ready to challenge themselves and come away with images they once thought were out of reach.
